The Sitting Room - Part 1 - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

Comments

Christine… The amount of cases you would have solved as a detective and clues you would’ve found as a forensic—incredible!

Cesar

you are incredible I always watch in awe!

ming

It's so fascinating to watch you work, and to see what things might have looked like so many years ago.

Banashee

So interesting what you find! Your Photoshop skills are just amazing. I’ve always loved This Old House, and your version just takes a lot longer and has a lot more detail happening. I look forward to seeing more.

Tanya Hermann

You always make it looks soo easy!! Talk about restoration and preservation! Now you can archive this for future generations. I love the colors in these patterns.

Peaches McDrools

Christine!! Let me introduce you to Select Subject! If you dont already know. When you Hit W to activate select tool and you can use either the lasso, or the rounded brush to push the selection to where you want it... instead go to the top of the screen and click Select Subject. It would immediately and perfectly select those pieces for you. Also when you are doing photoshoots it's amazing at grabbing pieces from reference images, Including hair!! enjoy let me know how it works!!

Greg Hopwood - Costume Concept Designer

This was an awesome video. Your skill and patience is amazing to watch, and Can we talk about the music in this episode!!? I felt like we were on a magical adventure!

Kitty Lang

You are a salvaging Angel I swear! So thoughtful to the past :')

Deyikah

Watching with my preschooler.... "mummy pull up our carpet!" Ummm sorry baby, we rent 🥴

Kerry Feely

Your videos bring me so much joy! Thank you for what you do. Can't wait for part 2!

Danielle Jeal

@Emily Easton, what a cool job! You should be a guest on one of Christine's posts where you design one together!

Anna McCambridge

Greek Keys are very common in gravestone design, even today! I am a headstone designer in Colorado and they surprisingly have been very often requested!

Emily Easton

Yes it’s truly awful how the Nazis turned this symbol into a symbol of hate. It’s origins speak of peace and prosperity.

Meredith Kiyomura

We loved this video so much! My fiancé screamed when you found the big pieces of wallpaper! He said, “if this beautiful woman starts painting that by hand Again I’m walking out!!!” 😂😂😂

Logan Ersatz

Love love!

AlienSoph

Amazing! Even more so since i’m currently learning photoshop. Cant wait for part 2!

Rebecca Kettle

Is there a live this month?

Desiree Coon

Yep! I pretty much just leave her window up and keep checking back :D

Andie

Ohh I loved this one so much! Can't wait for part 2. I was mesmerized by you putting together the wallpaper on photoshop

Jen

Haha! I'm actively still working on it! Should be coming out near the end of the month :))

Christine McConnell

Keep checking back for part 2 😂

Wendo Calrissian

If you click on her Patreon profile she has a pinned post at the top with all the episodes in order.

Tiana Coats

Does anyone else have a playlist they’ve made of all of the episodes?? I work from home and my Christine McConnell playlist is my favorite thing to turn on while I’m working ❤️

Brooke

thanks! I'm clueless with this sort of thing lol

Kristin

I think she's wearing some kind of dex-fit cut resistant glove. Level 5 maybe? https://www.mydexfit.com/index.php?tpf=shop/detail&category_code=1010&code=185

Isabel Bowen

So excited for new vids!! Sending love from Kentucky

Amanda Smith

What Gloves are you wearing when you pull up the carpet? I am in need of some to do re- upholster my chairs. Thanks so much!

Kristin

incredible work and so interesting, however, you definitely need better lighting, some parts of the video are to dark to see what you are really doing. Love all your videos!

Aline

And they're very beautifully produced too. I hope there are awards given for such high quality work.

miz vitko

You are just pure magic! xo

Bryce

The that key design is called a meandre and its the greek infinity design.

Jessica Harmsworth

It looked SO satisfying when the Greek key pattern came together!

a.Lynn

take care of you first

Chris Kobzina

The house restoration episodes are my favorite ✨ seeing a room come together when you put your mind to it is the most satisfying thing EVER

V

Ob. sessed. with that pink floral wall paper. Amazing work on this room so far!!

Jennifer Walker

Wonderful episode! Cant wait for part 2 :))

oli kravchenko

Hooray for before and after sequences brought to us by Christine! I'm going cross-eyed just thinking about all of the hours it took to exactingly recreate those wallpapers on Photoshop. Wow! After the 10th hour of staring at Photoshop I would have calmly sat up and said "NOPE!" I love your tenacity-nothing dissuades you! You are fearless!!!! So admirable!

Jenny McKinsey

Everything about your videos - your presence, the music, the art, the slow motion pet sequences - makes me feel so peaceful and inspired <3

Michelle Larrimore

You are NUTS!!! This is an insane project I cannot believe your patience. 🙌🙌🙌

Sophia Santini

Wow this looked so incredibly time consuming and I was enthralled by it all! How many hours or days did restoring the floral pattern take once you got it into photoshop? Thank you for sharing your hard work!! 🖤

Sarah Rodriguez

I love your videos and all of the art that you create and recreate! It would be helpful if you captioned your videos so that they are ADA compliant. This would mean editing the auto-captions with proper grammar, capital letters, and periods. Thank you.

Deborah Paulsen

Hi Christine! I have had this question for an about a year now but I wasn't sure where to post it so you could see it. I really want an answer for this one! I have been listening to the music tracks your Captive has created (they are super great! Remind me of the game Alice Madness Returns!) And in the one called "Mechanism" there is a sound I am 99.5% convinced that it is Professor Poof snoring. I really really really want to hear if this is true or am I going mad?

Sohvi Suruisa

The level of patience you have 🙌😂 I love these videos!! It’s fun to watch someone else do this, I like the idea of it but I don’t have the gusto to do it. Restoring/renovating our 1948 Uber 70’s home was enough for me 😂 these videos are relaxing to me. Love watching the sped up photoshop

Ashley Lucero

I'm really interested in those blue and gold florals that appear beneath this in some photos.

Page Brunner

I'm amazed at the detail and piecing the wallpaper together. Congress needs your skills in piecing hundreds of shredded documents back together!!!!

Dianna Porretta

My inner creator and inner archiver battle for dominance when I watch these! Wish I could dig in and archive all your discoveries.

Gincredible

I live in France and this was on too late for me, but finally have had the opportunity to catch up :-) And have now watched an episode of the Golden Girls as I have never seen. Looks like lots of fun, so will definitely look forward to viewing more. I just love your quirkiness of having a chat and watching a TV show together. So original! Any chance you can do a live stream earlier? Midnight here on a Sunday is just too late :-(

Alycea

You're nuts. Bonkers! Completely barmy! ...and I TOTALLY admire your patience and dedication! Can't WAIT for next month's video!

Emma

Hello Christine! You are right these are indeed swastikas. Swastika is the Sanscrit name of a sacred symbol known in many cultures, Greece being one of them. In Greek it's called tetragamadion, which means four times gamma, the third letter of the Greek Alphabet. It was a sacred symbol with many deep philosophical meanings. If you ever happen to wander around down town Athens you will come across it on many old buildings on the exterior. Here is an example. https://www.mixanitouxronou.gr/giati-o-tsiller-evale-agkilotous-stavrous-sto-iliou-melathron/ The Nazis actually called it Hakenkreuz and it wasn't the only symbol they abused.

ELENI NIKOLOVIENI

This was wonderful, uncovering mysteries and recreating historical designs. I second whoever commented that Christine has the patience of a saint, and raise you remarkable artistic skills. It's nice to see that the little pup is no longer molesting Archimedes, who seems quite patient himself these days.

miz vitko

I'm grateful she isn't tucked away in some mudeum. :)

miz vitko

Heh, maybe just 'liberate' it. Just kidding!

miz vitko

For some reason, I think she does use the wacom tablet as well, bc after viewing one of her Photshop-related videos, I was inspired to look up this device.

miz vitko

I'm a graphic designer who works on patterns sometimes and I LOVED this episode!

Sophia Kaplan

What fun uncovering all those layers of history! I'm curious, is that fireplace you were removing carpet next to stone or a faux finish? I know the Victorians were mad about faux painting.

Elizabeth Moss

Hope you are doing well!!!

Vicky Fox

Christine! You're like an archeologist! I can't believe how hard you work. The house must thank you every day.

Alyne Whiteswan

I really enjoy videos like this even if they are short. Perhaps shorter videos could reduce the time between updates?

Justina

If only our walls can talk, that would be music to our ears. What you do has us all amazed.

Martha Soria

so wonderful! I was a bit confused with the floral pattern that seems to appear under the grecian one. Is that just a trick of the camera? Is it actually over top? which one is oldest?

Dominique Duguay

Oh man, oh MAN, it's such a delight to see you meticulously recreating and conserving these patterns. And the greek key really is very pretty, but yeah, the 40's really ruined that sort of design for everyone, eh?

Nora Dallaire

Love your work and to what lengths you go to, to "do it right"! But when you were cutting the carpet, you came about 2 inches from cutting off your little toe. I know you're smart and industrious, just also be careful! (And you were in socks!! Oh my! lol) I really enjoy all you do! Thanks from Indiana!

Linda Dockery

Pattern design by Louis E Day first published in 1903 you can read it at archive.org , I think some of the best books out there for learning about pattern design. You can still buy the reprint. If this helps in anyway.

Erin

Amazing!

thestateofBri

Wow! Plays right into a dream I had recently. I dreamed I went to visit the manor but it was in the future. It had been turned into a museum, you and The Captive had donated it to the town for proceeds to go to a special project after your deaths. There were plaques and roped off areas that talked about what you did in the home. In the dream, I saw you in a large mirror. You motion for me to follow and I stepped inside. I went in and came out into a animal hospital. There was also a cat Cafe and a nature preserve. You had set up "Bigley and McConnel Animal Sanctuary and Nature Perserve". The proceeds from the museum went to fund this. There was so much to see in the house, it was one of those dreams you don't want to wake up from. I hope I have something similar like it again some night.

Deb McGrath

Would it be possible to get large-sized scans of the wallpaper you discovered? I love the one with the flowers so much!

Alyssa

Forever in awe of your skillz!!

Rachel

Textile designer here! I am in love with this video! This is exactly what I do for a living! Kind of a photoshop wizard myself (not to toot my own horn but... TOOT!). WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE TOOL YOU REALLY NEED TO WORK WITH.... the wacom tablet. I KNOW you have had this advice before, but it needs to be a thing in your life. It pains me to see you using that mouse the way you do (unless you have already started using a pen, ignore me then lol). I know its your comfort zone (I KNOW,I've been there), but you are going to give yourself carpel tunnel so fast! And honestly, you are missing out on so much by working this way. All that clicking and dragging, it's unnecessary. I love watching the techniques you are using to overlay the pieces using the transparency (similar to how I do it). I wish we could have a fun girl photoshop party to Share knowledge and techniques! But really, you are doing so well with this! I love piecing together old and completley destroyed prints (and wallpapers too). Its like resurecting history! So, let me know if you ever want some tips! Xoxo!

Kathleen palmer

You are amazing! But I'm not going to lie, when you were peeling that paper back, I thought, that looks like a swastika 🙄 Can't wait for the next episode!

Dawn Galusha

Christine!! First, I don't know where you find the time to do such detailed work. You are SO talented. I am continually inspired by your love of and preservation of history. Looking forward to Pr. 2!

Daniel Klingler

You are incredible, this is so interesting, thank you!

Lissa Mckinnon

A heat gun removes paint economically, quickly and with considerably less mess than a chemical remover. The gun can be used with indoor or outdoor paints, and will work on either latex or oil-base finishes. Hope that helps in the future in removing paint from wood molding. :)

Rebecca Valentine

Oh, how delightful to see your detective work! Wow, the secrets these old house hold and you are the perfect person to uncover and preserve them. I am so thrilled your eye surgery was a success and your vision has improved. Bless you!

Pamela Kay

I did a lot of archetectural stencelling professionally and I found I really liked making stencils from Manila folders. Cheap, easy to cut, and surprisingly durable when using oil colors. Really liked oil crayons too. Probably not so good for water based paints.

jane urmston

Oregon This was so interesting to watch and I must say, you have the patience of an Angel! I think that room is going to look amazing and I love the fact that I get to watch every step of the process. Thank you for sharing and showing what secrets your home is revealing. I wonder what other shadowy and dark corners reveal!?

Anna Radaelli

Christine, I understand your aversion to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika. It was not until I saw the Dan Brown movies (Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code) did I realize that the symbol has been around for centuries. It may take another century to end the association of that symbol to the horror that we remember. "We will never forget," "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." (((Hugs))) because you need them!

Terry L. Steffen

Regarding the blue carpet removal. I went through exactly the same thing in a house I restored about 20 years ago (I am now working on a 1790's colonial in New Hampshire!). I had carpet, with subflooring underneath and I was hoping for hardwood floors beneath the subflooring. The problem is the subflooring is typically nailed down HARD and is in large sheets (like 6x8 ft or larger). Impossible to remove by chipping away at it with a hammer and prybar. The nails just do not come out using the pry method with a hammer or crowbar. I discovered then a tool called a nail remover. Its a heavy duty manual tool that works like a hand operated piston. You place the device over the nail you want to remove, use a jack hammer like lever and after a few sliding movements, it wedges the tool under the nail in such a way that you can easily lever it out. It worked wonders! I will NEVER get rid of that tool. Mine is cast iron and about the size of an umbrella handle. If you have more carpet and more hardwood floors to (potentially) discover, I would highly recommend finding one. It may need to be special ordered...I don't commonly see them at hardware stores, but its well worth the effort if you have a lot of restoration work. It will do the job like nothing else. One of the best tool investments I ever made...even though, in that instance like Christine, I DIDN'T find hardwood in that room:( Better to find that out the easy way, with the right tool, than the hard way with the wrong one though, right? Hope that is helpful!

Cbon

Thank you!!!! So exciting!

Chop Shop Stitch

Loved this extra special treat and the dedication you put into preservation work! SO excited to see the progress of the sitting room. ❤️

Christine, I understand the stigma associated with the swastica so I wanted to share this with you https://www.google.com/search?q=swastica+where+did+it+come+from&oq=swastica&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i512.7757j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Carol Jollymore

What a great surprise to see this episode this evening! THank you!. I love that you are discovering the house one inch at a time and including us in the reveal. The wall paper pattern is beautiful and inspiring. I know you will restore it with love and the final outcome is going to be breathtaking! I saw a glimpse of Mr. Biggles on your computer and thought he was a ghost at first. Lovely in every way!

Michelle Lofthouse

Love this! Excited for more episodes of this journey!

Becky Croak

I bet the family that owned this house is sooooo glad you were the one to buy it

Gina Radford

I love that you dig into the history of art and design! It’s like a fun mystery!

Jessica Darne

It’s so exciting to watch all of this!! I’m also very intrigued by the stenciling you uncovered. I’ll be watching every episode you’re able to share with us.

Denise Pfaff

Very true haha I figured I would mention it for if she was looking at something she could just upload to and go for maybe smaller projects and the like

Miggea

I hope you'll find a reference in databases so you can know what the bottom part of the frise was !!!

Shaé Emery

silvia _yin

I would give every non-vital organ in my body (and potentially the vital organs of others) to have that owl. I will absolutely report back.

Jennifer Treviño

That's a really apt description!

miz vitko

Please see if the carved owl TV cover is still there, and report back!

miz vitko

You are so amazing! So patient. I'm thrilled to be witnessing this journey with you.

Angela Pearson

They do have a ton of gorgeous designs, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Christine just decided she was going to design a fabric, and then have it manufactured. Or she'd loom it herself. :) Honestly, she is so skilled, I wasn't kidding.

miz vitko

I love all the episodes to do with your home!! So excited for the rest to come

John

We're Greek and my captive and I have Greek Key tattoos... the one we have looks more like "waves", but I can definitely see what you're saying with that particular pattern. However, you did a beautiful job and I would adore that wallpaper in my home!

Sarah

My husband and I are restoring my grandparents' Florida farmhouse that was built in the late 1800s. These old houses hold so many stories... I LOVE this episode; it spoke directly to my heart! Thank you, Christine.

Paige Phoa

Not sure how helpful this would be for future projects but there is a website called Spoonflower where you can load patterns for fabric, wallpaper, etc and I thought may come in handy for other projects! (I plan on using one of their amazing mushroom damask patterns from an artist to do an accent wall in my studio)

Miggea

I'm so excited!

Lissy London

I am so excited to see all the steps of this project. Everything you do is gorgeous!

Jennifer Stratton

Christine has the patience of a saint! 🕰

Sarah

You're the best! Thank you!

Paige Phoa

Wow this was absolutely fascinating and mesmerizing! It's so fun to watch you discover all the mysteries your house holds!

Anna Moore

What a fun surprise! Also, found and booked the mountain house. So excited!

Jennifer Treviño

Yay!

Jane Good

Ooo what a fun surprise!!! So funny, as you were unveiling that symbol I said to my kid “it looks like Frank’s flag from its always Sunny! She didn’t know it was gonna come off like that” but then as you kept unveiling you are totally right! It all works together and isn’t recognizable. Can’t wait to see it come together, it’s really cool seeing your process!

Cassandra Cyr

You would've done well as a conservationists but then we wouldn't get to see all the work you're doing 💕

Honeybee Bailey

Yay!

Justin Patterson

Ok, I was going to do some cleaning, buuuut this is far more important 😁 I need to prioritise, so the cleaning will just have to wait xx

Liana Palumbo

Such a fantastic episode!!!!

I loved watching This Old House when I was little. And your place is like that but also like Unsolved Mysteries. Lol. I love watching the house reveal itself. And it’s in such good hands.
