The New York House...

So crackers! I flew with my Mom to that incredible property in Auburn New York because It just seemed so perfect and I couldn't stop thinking about it...

Well shoot...it's got a little more damage than I was anticipating and my Mom (who's usually up for just about any challenge) was worried about privacy and safety as it is right in the middle of the city ':/

The house is insanely beautiful, with ornate gothic wood and metal work and so much potential. I just was doing the math on what it would cost to bring back and factored in the restrictions on my time and think I should keep looking for something a little more manageable for me and fun for you! (I could just see myself trying to make episodes with one hand, while plugging a hole in the ceiling with the other! )

I hope you all like being kept in the loop on this search... I'll find the right one soon and can't tell you how much I appreciate being tagged in potential houses :D

On a side note... does anyone know what kind of spider this is? He's so beautiful and I'm sad we never got to know one another :(

The New York House... The New York House... The New York House... The New York House...

If you go to picture 33 of that listing, they show a bedroom with purple walls, a fireplace, a cat door, and a urinal! How perfect for a cat man with urinary problems! Houses now are rarely quite this customized.

Gabriela H

think it was a garden spider

Jordan Barler

If you're not set on New York, West Virginia has some FANTASTIC homes that could use love!

Chrissie Gross

Just saw this listing...it's not as gothic.....but perhaps it would suit? https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/608-Vance-St-Reidsville-NC-27320/70141944_zpid/

Amy Slavin

Kristine, I can't believe you passed on the Seymour mansion!! Whuttttt???? This would be a great fundraising vehicle, I think you could raise to money to fix the structural issues, also through GoFund me. I am just getting into your Patreon world, honestly you are the best show on Youtube. What if you tried to raise the money?? You could also start a nonprofit 501C3 or something like that and once you get the place built give something back by using the space somehow for some phillanthropy? Anyway, this house needs you!!!! And it is haunted. Is it too late?

Suzanne Robinson

The spider looks like a type of Micrathena from the irregular abdomen, Spined Micrathena are found in New York

Erin Kerdavid

Wow, that old piano (harpsichord?) looks amazing and sad, I want to help it!! I make and restore violin bows for a living and your channel inspires me to do more!

Oh that poor lonely piano makes me sad

anna daly

I realized I posted the address of the very house you were looking at in Auburn after the fact! I love this house! Sorry it didn’t work for you. It would have been a grand restoration!

Brenda Joy Vaughn-Ellis

There is another mansion in Auburn: 113 North Street. You may like this one. It’s a beauty!

Not sure if your heart is set on the north, but the south has a lot of beautiful places like this one: https://www.facebook.com/ForTheLoveOfOldHouses/posts/2681064275492942 There's a lot of haunted places in South Carolina and in Savannah, GA and the Spanish moss makes it seem even more romantic and mysterious

Christine, This house has remarkable character and could make a wonderfully spooky house full of cats. Its in Oxford, NY. https://www.oldhousedreams.com/2019/09/30/1876-gothic-revival-oxford-ny/

Thommy Deah

Thank you for sharing! I was scrolling to see if anyone identified the spider. I think they’re beautiful but they still freak me out a bit.

Veronica Lara

Thanks for the info!

Gina Radford

OMG! That spider is huge! Sorry this one wasn't a perfect fit -- rooting for you to find one that matches you creatively. Love everything you're making -- thank you for sharing with us on Patreon and YouTube!

John and Matthew Royal

She did put a bid in, then went to see it, decided it may not be for her but also I don't think she took back the offer, letting what may happen happen.

Angela Pogue

There is an article on Fox News that said you put in a bid to buy it. Just thought you should know (in case it’s not true) It’s a beautiful house, I hope it’s true because you would make it look awesome!

Today's the last day! Here's the latest article! https://hookedonhouses.net/2019/12/16/christine-mcconnell-seymour-mansion/

I kept trying to post this last night but had some issues. Katie Buckley

Consider looking in New England! There are plenty of wonderful old houses here.

Janet Ray

You'll find the one! I'm beyond excited for you to be taking on restoring a house... it makes me glad to know there are people out there who recognize and value the beauty of these old places that have so many stories to tell us...

Amanda Fyfe

Hey, I don't know if anyone has posted this one yet, but check this out! It definitely needs some TLC, but the bones are there and it has so much spooky old home charm. Bonus: it already has a workshop in the yard. https://www.facebook.com/ForTheLoveOfOldHouses/photos/pcb.2659741564291880/2659739564292080/?type=3&theater

Hey you actually stopped in my moms store in Skaneateles! She was so so happy to meet you! Thank you for being so kind! And if you need anything else locally you know where to go, stop in and see Cathy! 😁

Forgot to mention that area of NJ/PA is just over an hour to both NYC and Philadelphia so perfectly easy to have amazing big city times but still enjoy rural living. I live in Maine now, still getting used to it. Also a cool place just a bit expensive and hard to get good paying steady work depending on your field. With your Patreon you have the luxury to live anywhere! Put some thought to island life in Maine...

Cariushka

First of all THANK YOU for mentioning Gunship! Whoa are they awesome, and their videos make the songs even more amazing. Love the 80s synth Brit pop feel but it’s so now too. And in your livestream you started to mention New Jersey as an option for your search maybe? I say check it out. The whole state is INTO Halloween big time. I lived in Milford (tiny quaint river town surrounded by hills and farmland and rivers) for 6 years and loved it. Western Hunterdon county is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen and is dotted with adorable old walkable towns and neat old houses. Howmever do beware the property taxes, they can be quite ridiculous. Upper Bucks county Pennsylvania is in the same gorgeous rolling country but in PA with gentler taxes but beware the Delaware River flooding potential.

You should look into - The Pillars Estate in Albion, NY.

Ashley Young

I'm sorry it didn't work out because it is beautiful and has so much potential but you would definitely need some living quarters for repairs of that magnitude.

Susanne Tassin

I found this one, looks nice https://www.trulia.com/p/ny/syracuse/749-w-onondaga-st-syracuse-ny-13204--2089190246

Nikki Ruhl

Oh that's so funny - my Sacramento CA 700 square foot , 84 year old shoe-box house is assessed twice that!

Aunt Debbie Halloween

Would you possibly be able to reno/live in the guest house out back before taking on the big house?

Lisa Nelson

If it’s this same property, you probably dodged a bullet, looking at the 2019 property tax assessment: https://www.newyorkupstate.com/homes/2019/12/for-sale-in-upstate-ny-fixer-upper-civil-war-mansion-for-50000-with-10-bedrooms.html

Seeing what you're going through reminds me of a great movie I saw years ago with Tom Hanks and Shelly Long called, "The Money Pit" . If you ever have some time to relax I highly recommend it. Hang in there!

Roger J Stone

So I just saw this listing and I don’t know how I can share the link on here but please please check out this address. It is amazing. 361 Barnum Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06608

Ellerie “Sit in Your Tears” Maddox

Yes! The genus Argiope are all orbweavers that make those giant, beautiful webs! 😊 If you google "Argiope webs" there's some neat webs to see! They do this cool zig-zag pattern in the center of webs to stabilize it and it's crazy to think what nature can craftily do LOLOL Anywho sorry, I could blah all day about these guys 😅

Chelly IRL

Is she an Orbweaver?

Kylie Miller

Aw that’s no good! But I completely understand your mom’s concerns. My family is doing the same thing and we keep running into similar things. On a slightly different note, have you ever heard of Alton, Illinois? “America’s most haunted small town” has some beautiful old homes and a lot of them overlook the Mississippi River. It’s not back east, but we have some very pretty seasons in southern Illinois too. I’ve seen a few that made your house hunt come to mind.

The hunt is the fun part and there are sooo many amazing properties. We flew to PA to see one off that website and I fell in love on the spot but my husband wasnt convinced. I keep wondering it would be like if we lived there (it was an old camp lodge with a little cabin restored out back plus the cook house was restored as a wood shop and massage studio. It had 10 acres and was right off the Appalachian trail and near Gettysburg. Also took a trip to Tx to see an old Brick school, had an inspection and everything but the roof was so bad and I couldnt find any roofer to even want to touch it, finally got an estimate on a new roof and it was 3 times the price of the school. So I understand some are more work then you want. Im excited to follow your journey! Love hearing about properties even if you dont get them!

Shar W

Thank you for that! I knew it was a garden spider, but I assumed it was male.

2OddRavens

https://circaoldhouses.com/property/the-house-of-seven-gables/ That one is a bit pricy and maybe less of a fixer upper than you want but it looks gorgeous! This one is better priced though and also looks cute. https://circaoldhouses.com/property/1800s-victorian-with-delaware-river-view/

Piper Hoffman

Also, anyone know why the home has so much water damage, was there a fire in it or something? I always wonder what happened over time that the home looks like this today?

caitlin interlicchia

That is so awesome that you guys flew out to see it! I don't blame you for wanting to keep looking. P.s. i love that you post these updates and share with us! Shows how genuine you are 😊

caitlin interlicchia

Definitely in the Nephilinae subfamily

Janice Panic

Awe but that’s so cool you went! I’ll see if I have a link for potential houses

Eureka springs, AR, eccentric little mountain Victorian town. Perfect for you! Low cost of living. I considered this house, now sold, but it is a perfect example of what you can find here: https://www.oldhousedreams.com/2019/04/14/1888-second-empire-eureka-springs-ar/

Yes, $50k for 5k sq ft sounded too good to be true. But there are more out there! Don’t forget about eureka springs, AR, and the Ozark idea in general. Super cheap and worthwhile homes, ready to be Reno’d by a loving and talented hand!

It looks so awesome but one hell of a challenge to undertake. Glad and a little sad for you to pass on this but it’s the right thing to do. Very best.

John & Michelle

Have you checked with the local historical society to see if there are monies available for the resurrection of the place?

Kimber L Calder-Isgrig

Oh that sucks, but I kinda suspected that looking at the other pics posted. Somebody with a Lot of disposable income needed to get that place back shipshape. Im glad you got to go and see it though, and im sure the right witchy old house will find its way to you.

Celeste Young

Ohhhh, dang...I’m with you, so much potential but SO much work!! Glad you passed on this one, that looks like a massive undertaking! They have the coolest spiders back east!! Hehe

Doreena Clark

Spider hobbyist here 😊 It's a female Argiope aurantia spider aka a Black and Yellow Garden spider- not to be confused with a Banana spider. What gives it away is her cephalothorax (fore-body) and her distinct leg coloration. Argiope aurantia have that "gradient" leg coloring and the light cephalothorax. Also, her now-shriveled abdomen still shows some slight design of her beautiful detailing when she was alive. Still beautiful, even in death! While her abdomen is shriveled, you can preserve her still if you want! Just place her in Tupperware with a damp paper towel flooring, spray her slightly also with water, shut the lid and let her sit for a good 48 hours. Her limbs will be manageable to move however you like. Anywho, sorry for all the info LOL I adore spiders, have maintained 50+ of them and they're always such interesting little babies! 😊

Chelly IRL

The right one will present itself! 💜 🛠🧰 with that much damage you’d need a contractor you kept locked in the basement ☺️

Ken Gerleve

I used to live in Woodstock. The Square in Woodstock is lovely, and it’s only 55 minutes to Chicago. It’s too bad the Stickney house in nearby Bull Valley isn’t for sale. It was built by spiritualists to communicate with the dead.

Ken Gerleve

I live in the area. There are many charming older houses built during the city's time as home to the Woodstock Typewriter Company. The city also has been working hard to make the old city center (known as "The Woodstock Square") into a hub of independent businesses, boutiques and art. Plus, the location provides easy access to all kinds of transportation and national chain businesses.

That looks like a fishing spider. I didn’t realize Auburn was a city. I thought it was a town. Here I thought NY only had 5 cities. If you decided to go for it, I’d absolutely make a few weekend trips out to help you out, even if it’s just to hold the camera :)

Fawn Valentine

I had a feeling that would be the case.

So sorry it didn't work out, it's so sad that the house got into that state. Hopefully the person who does buy it can make it beautiful again. ❤️

Sarah Kane

Super cool!

Aunt Debbie Halloween

From the flat on top of the head I'd say it's a type of tarantula or wolf spider.

Giant Sloar

Thanks for the update Christine! It's so nice to get to know more about you and the things you are up to! So sad it wasn't a match, but I hope the house finds someone else that can take care of it, it's so beautiful! I know you'll find the right one for you too. I'm enjoying so much seeing the houses that everyone suggests, and if I happen to see one that reminds me of you I'll send it your way! Have a nice end of the week! XO

Simón J.

You can try Google Lens with that spider, it may be able to tell you what kind it is.

Daniel Wx

That /might/ be a hobo spider. How big is it?

Rikka Koi

OMG, that one is so beautiful!!

Simón J.

I commented on a previous post with another house not sure if you got it but i can send it again if you want to see!

Kassandra Love

I would guess it's a wolf or some type of huntsman, judging by the thickness of the legs. Orb weavers have skinny spindly legs.

Sarah Rowan

I still love that house -minus the killer spider. But, I get it..... money pit, time snatcher. I hope someone saves the piano!

Alfreda Payton

I think Tom Hanks and Shelley Long would call this one a 'Money Pit'. ;)

Sean Paul

You'll find the right one. Happy House Hunting!

Angie Loyd

My friends know i'm also looking for a property in the northeast and one of them sent me the link to this house and I laughed and told them you were already looking at it and would let us know if it was worth it. It made me happy they thought of me when they saw it and I was hoping that it would be in decent condition so you could rehab it. It's probably best you moved on from it, you'll find a better place when it's the perfect time.

MariDeath ScaryBeth

That spider is beautiful offhand I would say it is a garden spider based on the legs and body structure....sorry about the house seeing it reminded me of the movie 'money pit' but that ceiling is amazing....I have driven by many beautiful homes across the United States....is your heart set on New York?

Beci Johnson

I think you made the right decision. With that kind of water damage over the years a million bucks might not even be enough. Hopefully, someone with a lot of money will save it. You have begun your journey, as you learn along the way, you will eventually find what is right for you!

Roger J Stone

Do you mean you will be making videos of your process of fixing up a house? That would be super helpful to know and exciting:) (I also want to buy a house soon) Hope you find the perfect place soon!

Nicole Kayal

THAT ONE would be a DREAM! :D

You will find a different house with land that would be better for you and your fur babies. It’s the journey of house hunting! 💖

Kathryn Kauffman Psychic Medium

Good idea, but some houses are beyond salvaging. By the way, that spider looks like a type of garden spider.

Big Rich

Something will come along! It’s a cute small city, but so much work and those taxes on top of it! The spider looks like a Golden Garden Spider and we have them in these parts.

Karen

Oh my gosh, that would be so much work! I would be a bit irked by lack of privacy too, even though it is gorgeous. Thanks for including us in the house hunt, I'm sure you'll find the perfect one :-)

Katherine

Sorry it didn't work out here's one I saw https://realestate.savingplaces.org/properties/quincy-mine-agents-house/

Orealgreenleaf

Well that's a bummer, but I'm convinced that THE perfect house will become available to you at just the right time! I LOVE that you're keeping us in the loop, I'm just as excited as you are, if not more! That spider was gorgeous, and I say that as a complete spider-phobic loon.

Jade

Go back and get that spider! Then you could do a show about dioramas (not sure that’s the right term) with found dead beauties....I made one with a hummingbird a while ago.

Katie C. Gutierrez

Literally my first thought!

gwendolyn 🎃🎄

Such a shame, it's such a beautiful looking building.

Stunning, but you need more land! 🖤

Sarah

I second the wolf spider guess, but I've never seen one with such a light thorax before.

I personally love being kept in the loop. Thank you for thinking of us. Can’t wait to see the house you do choose.

Saluting Darwin

I'm so sad to see that this isn't a good fit for you. I've been seeing it in media over the last few days and this house is amazing. I'm curious, did you submit your plans and bid or had you not gotten that far with the process? I'm glad they're requiring it, so that whoever buys it will legitimately restore/fix it up.

KB Wood

Perhaps an orb weaver or barn spider like Charlotte from Charlotte’s Web.

Andre Hall

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry to hear it's not what you had hoped for. Will keep my fingers crossed that you find something just right!!

Jordan Blanton

I’m sure the right house will find you. Thanks for the update.

Oh my goodness that spider is gorgeous 😍 if no one here can solve that puzzle is go to Reddit and ask r/spiders.

Also check out the Repair shop, a BBC show streaming on Netflix. 🥰

Scott Ohmacht

I was just hoping it wasn’t a scam. I’m glad you didn’t rush into something.. the right house will turn up

Desiree Coon

A travesty that it got into such disrepair. Hopefully it finds a loving new owner!

Meredith Steele

Aww, I’m sorry it was a bust! It is beautiful, but definitely sounds like the right decision and it just means the perfect house is still out there waiting for you. I really love seeing these behind-the-scenes/real life moments - thank you for sharing them with us!

Lily

I move into my new house today. You'll find the right one, especially with an army of like minded sleuths behind you.

Branwen Frost

I saw that the property was city owned and they were selling it in a unique way that seemed to require a lot of planning and promises before offers would be seriously considered. I’m glad they are protecting this place but sad that you won’t be the one to take care of it. There are plenty more though that need love! Try the Midwest too! 🥰

Brandon Grew

That was my exact thought. When you posted it, I thought to myself “wow I love the house but it’s right off that major street”

Victoria Chaires

Awww what a shame!!! 😔 Will keep looking.

M W

Wow! What s place that must have been in it's day! Think of the music from that beautiful piano.

Jennifer Grenko

Amazing place, but definitely a money pit. Good luck on your search!

Nichole C

That may well be a harpsichord (the piano like instrument). It needs to be saved! The house does have some serious issues it seems.

Jonathan Smith

Its too much work. I also looked at street view and it looked to be on a busy road??

Meagan Sharman
