Sales Taxes

This month Patreon started charging patrons part/all of their State local sales tax on their pledge.

Anyone want to give some insight on how that looked on their end?
Were you charged any extra?

It seems like I had a bit of a dip on my end but not much. It may be all deducted on my end, not sure.
I believe the way I itemized by patron benefits reduces what is taxed.

Anywhoo, how goes?

Nothing in June or July for Ohio

Matthew Morris

The email I got said something about 10% GST (that's what we call the sales tax in Australia) applying from 1 July. It also said that it would not exceed a maximum of 0.50 cents. Anyway, doesn't matter, I am happy to pay the tax, this Patreon is more than worth it.

As much as it's nice to think otherwise, and yes this is mostly a "donate" platform, I am providing a service to my followers in ways. Patrons can also redeem copies of my art book, which is a product.

Sales taxes? For what? You're not selling us anything. We're not buying anything from you!

Michael Cohen

Aye. But while I'm used to some variance, my earnings dropping $20 this month is more than the norm. The income tracking pages were also implying some weirdness.

Anthony Scroggins

The sales tax isn't collected until July 1, not June 1. It's also collected from Patrons, not deducted from pledges. All of this is in the FAQ. :P

Michael Prescott

Let me quickly add, I happily pay the tax. The fact that Patreon is suddenly charging this, will not in any way impact my choice in keeping up this subscription. Taxes could double and I’d still pay.

Jakob Fredensborg

In Denmark all services are levied a 25% VAT, including my Patreon subscriptions. So no change here.

Jakob Fredensborg

No change for me (from Canada).

ditto

Being from Europe a tax has always been applied to my donations.

Nyxus

I got a notice from Patreon today saying effective July 1st some pledges could be taxable. Otherwise, my pledge bill this month is unchanged. If they’re taking it out of your end, let us know - I’ll up my pledge.

No Dervish yet, though I did paint one up many years ago.

Anthony Scroggins

At least States do a bit better with efficiency and representation. This isn't a Fed tax. And IMO if we're gonna be angry that big corps evade taxes, we need to be willing to hunker down and pay our own too. If they did start this month, I managed to keep them minimal.

Anthony Scroggins

No it was still 2 bucks. Off topic for a minute, are you or have you done the Dervish mech for the miniature yet?

Tyler Erickson

No changes for me this month. Total BS though. Just another gimmick to nickle and dime everyone. With the amount of waste this government has, there is no reason for more taxes at all.

Andrew McKenna

My calculator jumped up $30 at midnight, then ended up dropping $20 instead of gaining when charging was done lol.

Anthony Scroggins

Ah maybe.

Anthony Scroggins

Pretty much just the US I think. There are ways here for online sales to avoid state taxes, they're ending that for patreon.

Anthony Scroggins

Mine looks good, I read the email from Patreon though and it seems only certain pledges or if a pledge is over a certain amount they will charge tax on it.

It's because, while they're still being fairly benevolent towards the idea of donating money, patreon is a place where physical and digital products are being sold as part of that transaction. States are wanting their semi-rightfull piece of the pie. If we're mad about Amazon dodging taxes, we can't exempt our own online endeavors.

Anthony Scroggins

No extra charges for me.

Maarten Broekman

I'm in Canada. No taxes this month or any previous month - exactly $2 USD.

I ...can't tell. Nothing ever adds up to what Patreon says it's going to anyhow. I actually seemed to end up with...5$ more than it said I would?

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

No WA tax charged on the statement I got today.

Yankee Air Pirate

No tax added in Colorado for June

I just checked, no difference this month. But i already payed the VAT (19% for me in germany) since at least half a year (checked old receipts) so maybe this just applies to some countries?

Swen Decker

I don’t think it takes effect until July.

Carlos Sempere

My state doesn't have sales tax. Also confused how this could be subject to sales tax?

William Minsinger

Zero increase on my end this month.

In Indiana, I didn't get hit with sales tax
