Atlas Edits

Is this any level of notable improvement to the people who were on the fence about the Atlas sculpt? I know it wont make the more planted against crowd much happier, but wanted to try easing things over a bit.

There is quite a laundry list of edits here, not just on the head either, maybe you can spot them.

It kind of seems to me that the Atlas is a prime candidate for a big MML launcher to replace both the LRM and SRM systems.

Janes Interstellar

I definitely like it much more than before. It also helps since the first image i saw of this design, the walk was more pronounced, and I winced as it looked just too overextended. Now, with the new pose, and subtle changes to the proportions, it looks great. :)

The DRT

It might be possible to swap the launcher counts, but I tend to think of the SRMs as bigger bore than the LRMs. I'm thinking this looks pretty good. The LRM is clearly a "wave" launcher, fire a volley of 5, roll down reloads, repeat until you hit 20. (Of course, if your LRM-20 fires four volleys of 5 each, that suggests you could have a variable rate of fire, which is probably some sort of heresy.)

"I am death, destroyer of mechs! Oh, a daisy!"

I think it's night and day different. You fixed a LOT of subtle proportionality issues, that were killing this thing! I love the new version! Like so many others, I agree about the launchers. There is MORE than enough room for for a full LRM20 on the left side of the chest, with the SRM6 above the left hip. I think you'd make a LOT more people happy, if you did that, Anthony! Why don't you at least render it, and let people vote, and let the community decide? I'm SURE the tide will pull VERY strongly one way or the other(I think most will prefer a chest LRM20).

To be fair, often 2-5% changes have big impact.

Anthony Scroggins

Atlas is my favorite mech. And this is gorgeous.

Goloka Bernal

I never really cared for the Atlas personally. That said, I'm down with this, although I'd be very interested to see what more angular shoulders would do to the overall vibe

It still has a flower in its hair, so I’m happy.

Carlos Sempere

Nice can’t wait to see the whole lance together! I have 2 coming for 2nd wave

Robert Moore

I like it

Taylor Shead

It has the right silhouette. The iconic skull head and giant shoulders, and the little details like 5 tube lrm 20, sat dish, and coolent hookup. If there is anything don't like its ithe design off the dish. It could look more modern.

Chris L

MAN I FEEL LIKE I HAVE RADAR EYES

same

James Bixby

By a whopping 2% :)

Anthony Scroggins

Never been a fan of the Atlas, so I'm probably not the most qualified to comment on "good vs. bad" changes here. It looks very clearly like an Atlas to me in pretty much every way, so mission accomplished?

Robert Schuster

I cannot really see any major differences... but I feel like I like it a little more... it feels more intimidating... did you shrink the noggin down a bit?

Oh yes, quite pleased about that. And honestly, I like everything else about this Atlas.

Lexikon

Well a least you don't have to worry about the Stone Rhino anymore :)

Anthony Scroggins

The only thing that still bothers me is the LRM20 that looks like an LRM5. I know it fits the old style, but my mind just cannot wrap around it. Much like the Stone Rhino's small pulse laser in a massive center gun.

Lexikon

I can't really notice the differences if I am honest, which is driving me crazy, but I liked it anyway.

Is this in reference to the "how many stingers/locusts does it take to down an Atlas?" experiment so many players undertake? :)

Anthony Scroggins

Muhahahaha. Bring on the Stingers!!!

James Doughty

Guess I'll hit that when we do a proper ship out on it. I can spam renders more now with my new computer.

Anthony Scroggins

I really like the MWO Atlas and its head. But I can make any mech look cool if I go off the rails. I try to reserve that for the worst looking mechs. The Atlas was begging for a more classic sculpt after have so many sidegrade sculpts.

Anthony Scroggins

Mission accomplished then. It's a bunch of small changes that are hard to see but should be felt.

Anthony Scroggins

Unfortunately you're asking a guy who isn't an Atlas fan. However considering this mechs rep you obviously wanted to go for BIG, MEAN and UGLY and I think you've got that.

Tyler Erickson

Yeah man! Any chance of a back shot?

Jakob Fredensborg

Looks awesome! Very happy with it. Thank you so much for not MWO'ing it. (excessive plating/blocky/chunky design, etc.)

Andrew McKenna

I like it, much improved. I've not gone over it closely but it 'feels' more like an AS7, if you get what I mean?

Andrew Dickinson

The highly segmented plates? They're on the original art, the minis, and several other art sources for the Atlas.

Anthony Scroggins

I spoil the hunt if I just list it all out :P I think for many people its going to grow on them. Every new Atlas is a little jarring as it seems to get heavy handed changes every time.

Anthony Scroggins

I like it, though I feel the shoulder sockets are stolen from a Dragon or a Zeus. Personally I would play with the angles on the armour plates on the sockets to remove the Dragon/Zeus look.

Erin McKee

That's one I missed, but while I really like mech commander designs they're rarely good for more than overall main shapes due to their low res nature. I have looked at the advertising art of it though, kinda iffy and too humanoid haha.

Anthony Scroggins

The only changes I've noticed was a small change in the eye socket shape to make it a 'little' more sinister, and the muzzle of the AC20. If its any consolation, I wasn't an immediate fan of your interpretation, but he grew on me. What other changes have you made?

Afrikan Blond

I like it. Out of curiosity did you happen to look at the pixel art of the ATLAS from mechommander??
