Elliot, Tim and Paul get together to discuss and debate the new deal for Granit Xhaka and then give their bad opinions they're scared to share.

Arteta shoving Partey back on to the pitch against Spurs was the moment he showed he is not up to this.

Mertesaker will be in charge by the end of the season and prove to be a better coach. He's got Wenger energy.

I think Xhaka is a little underrated. Yeah he has his limitation, but who doesn't.
2021-08-06 07:02:18 +0000 UTC
Since Xhaka is so slow, maybe he will still be a good player when he is 30+. He has no speed to loose?😅
2021-08-05 20:38:36 +0000 UTC
But now they can keep a good player and get some money for him when he leaves. That’s a double win. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have some kind of agreement that will allow Xhaka to leave next summer if he wants.
2021-08-05 20:37:22 +0000 UTC
Sure that’s fair. But also.. him leaving on a free when he’s turning 31 feels Like a decent outcome

Regarding Xhaka and his new contract. Couldn’t it be so that Arsenal dont want him to go in a free transfer in two years? Why would Xhaka leave next year, with one year left, when he could wait and get more money as a free agent the year after? Maybe Arsenal is actually thinking in advance for once?
2021-08-05 18:29:37 +0000 UTC
That’s really interesting! When you put it that way it really clarifies for me that sense that there isn’t an opposing voice in the room
2021-08-05 14:02:47 +0000 UTC
Harder to do on a bigger contract
2021-08-05 14:01:59 +0000 UTC
Elliot, Paul, felt the arguments Paul made about the extention being about the dressing room hierarchy make good sense about what happened.. Yet, with Paul playing Arteta in this discussion, it just shows the unbelievable mess we are in when you realise Elliots role as a Director of Football is non existent at our club, and so are his very fair and important questions regarding these issues.
We are a club thinking short term, with a head recruiter also having a very close relationship with the players. I should warn myself and other strategic thinkers to lower expectations, I guess.. 😔😅
Thanks for the pod, helps clear the thoughts. 👍

Maddison is no better than David Bentley. Has his moments but can’t produce week in week out .
2021-08-05 12:55:27 +0000 UTC
Just because we give xhaka a new contract, doesn't mean that if a good offer comes in later this window, as chips fall, that we can't sell him, right?
2021-08-05 05:23:16 +0000 UTC
I feel like we are only ever making our rivals stronger
2021-08-04 20:23:56 +0000 UTC
If Xhaka stays, elneny must go
2021-08-04 19:28:01 +0000 UTC
Works for me
2021-08-04 19:07:37 +0000 UTC
Give xhaka a new contract, sell Elneny, buy an upgrade on both.
2021-08-04 19:06:07 +0000 UTC
Never mind xhaka. Signing Maddison for £60m+ is bad business. Especially giving Leicester our top 4 rivals all that money to reinvest. Spend £60m on lautaro, we need him, the money doesn’t go to a competing premier league club and it potentially scuppers Chelsea’s lukaku deal. We’re at a tipping point this summer and I worry there’s another emi martinez/ Willian style mess up in us. Hope I’m wrong
2021-08-04 18:53:26 +0000 UTC
We’re always grouping together the Willian and Cedric deals but aren’t they kind of not the same at all? Opposites even? Cedric was signed for free to be a backup and he’s mostly been fine as a backup. His attitude and work ethic seems to be good. Sure the wages are slightly inflated but for a free signing our overall outlay on him is fine. Willian on the other hand… horrible... Signed to be a starter… Has all the talent that Cedric doesn’t but doesn’t give a fuck.

Sure that’s fair. Maybe the better word is conviction. If you’ve got a good process, It should lead you where you want to go. But that means making hard choices. The club has sort of punted on a lot of hard choices and that’s cost us dearly
2021-08-04 13:17:19 +0000 UTC
Elliot, I don't htink it makes sense to criticize the club's decisions based on 'courage' - if anything making decisions that are unpopular in the eyes of the fanbase e.g. resigning Xhaka takes more courage than acquiescing to the whims of the fans, if Arteta and Edu believe that it is what's best for the club. That being said, you can disagree with the merits of the decision on the technical basis.
2021-08-04 11:54:17 +0000 UTC
The extension is until 2025.
2021-08-04 10:30:34 +0000 UTC
Guys, the Xhaka extension is only 1 year and only very small wage increase. So not catastrophic, sell Elnebey instead and get Guimarães...
2021-08-04 10:21:57 +0000 UTC
Mari and Ben White is a very weak CB partnership on paper. Neither of them are solid defenders, especially 1v1. Gabriel has his flaws, but he's good 1v1 and he's also quick and really physical. If we're planning on playing with a high line with Tierney basically playing as a winger, Mari-White would be suicide.

Elliot iam with you about Xhaka. Either we dont understand how club contract dept works or they don't know thier jobs. Evidence suggest to later sample Ozil, Willian, Auba, Cedric, Laca, kola. Each of these guys are on high 100 K plus with some over 200 K is just riduculous. They need to start including clauses in contract to get back some money due to lack of performance.
Iam taking a punt on Arteta falling out of love with Xhaka and struggling to move him on. Eventually they will pay him off and let him go.
2021-08-04 07:00:02 +0000 UTC
Elliot, how do you manage to keep the kids so quiet?! Impressive.
2021-08-04 06:31:05 +0000 UTC
Elliot, I don’t think your last opinion is such a bad one mate. I hope it doesn’t turn out that way, obviously, but it was definitely a ‘live’ issue as recently as Christmas! Great pod as always.
2021-08-04 05:49:43 +0000 UTC
Yeah it’s not great
2021-08-04 01:37:38 +0000 UTC
Maybe. I just worry it’s another situation where he’s turns 32 and we are paying him £120K/wk and complaining about “expensive deadwood” and then wondering why we didn’t just let him play down his contract. Maybe not. I guess I also was just ready to move on
2021-08-04 01:32:59 +0000 UTC
Oh I get your point but sometimes you have to re engage players to re motivate in a situation like this. It’s a low price risk for someone you know and can trust. I’m not sure in 2 years his value is much less than 12m anyway so you may gain buy in for free.
2021-08-04 01:31:29 +0000 UTC
It’s just that I don’t understand what we are trying to achieve. If we didn’t resign him we could just keep him until he’s about to turn 31 then move on. Now he’s here until he’s turning 33. It’s the last 2 years specifically when the wages may feel excessive and we could’ve just avoided them entirely
2021-08-04 01:27:32 +0000 UTC
I hope so!
2021-08-04 00:15:29 +0000 UTC
I think we will lean much more heavily on Lokonga this season than we initially thought. I really feel something like >20 EPL starts for him this year
2021-08-04 00:11:02 +0000 UTC
No. He’s not. But we didn’t have to extend. That’s more the point
2021-08-03 23:47:32 +0000 UTC
The club stated we would do one of either 2 things when a player has 2 years left on their contract. We couldn't sell Xhaka so we extend. The club like Xhaka, its only the fans that want him to leave and even that's divided. I would like new players for sure but Xhaka isn't the root of our problems.

“Paralysis of Stasis”! Spot on.
2021-08-03 22:34:35 +0000 UTC
Casually comparing Ben White to Iniesta. Definitely fits the theme of the podcast.
2021-08-03 21:03:54 +0000 UTC
Haven't even listened to this but already imagining the different circumferences of Elliots head expanding to before exploding at this 😂
