These podcasts are the best out there but this one has been exceptional. So much detail and considered points of view. Amazing stuff.

Don’t like super league to be honest. Doesn’t seem like a good thing no?

This pod was better than anything else I’ve heard or read over the past 48 hours. Massively controversial and emotive topic but think you guys nailed the nuance to the situation really well 👍

One more point is the tradition of English and European football clubs that makes this more abominable. The work that these clubs does at the community level and the strong bond with fans provides that emotional bond of fans with the club. Americanisation of European sport is not necessarily good and desirable. It’s worked for America and that’s great, but to impose that on every other sports is making it very monolithic and quite frankly imperialistic in nature. That is a strong reason I reject the concept. I also think that as an Arsenal fan I don’t get a choice either from these owners or the Fa since they are resorting to banning Arsenal for domestic league. Either ways as a fan I am being robbed of the right for me to enjoy my clubs ebb and flow

Guys my two cents. ESL is nothing but Americanisation of European football. But UEFa and FA by Thier policies have actively encouraged this behaviour. The day they allowed club’s ownership structure to change and take over by rich owners this was bound to happen. The German model of putting a cap on ownership makes Bayern think twice about joining such a league. Now if you allow corporate to take sport they will only look at it as a way to generate more revenue. The ESL is an exercise towards that. The reason I hate this concept is that there is no level playing field and sport is not enjoyable if you don’t have a semblance of level playing field. With ESL places confirmed for 12 clubs they will have assumed revenues which makes them more powerful than the rest. Since I come from India and have seen the way Cricket was bastardised by IPL which was again a Americanisation of domestic league I know how ESL will be a distasteful exercise. I don’t watch IPl at all as it’s just not Cricket. Where I have some hope albeit very minimal is the stand taken by players, fans, coaches, ex players and even Govt. Govt can if they want reject visas to players and make it harder for these teams to play. But then again there may be pressure from other Govts on British Govt to not interfere. I feel that UEFA , Fa and other bodies as corrupt as they are will probably take thier pound of flesh and let this slide away. The only hope it widespread condemnation and Govts strong arm tactics may delay this inevitable for some years

I can say I like the idea of a Super League, but do not like this implementation. I always pictured it to replace league play that certain teams are currently dominating, like Bayern for instance - they are headed for their 9th Budesliga championship in a row, and 1st or 2nd place finish 24 of the last 30 years? (18 of those champions) That's a team that needs to move on and a league that needs them to. Same goes for any other club(s) that has/have no competition in their leagues... Move on to greater challenges, and this Super League should be for league play, not a Champions League replacement. Allow for qualification into the league, like maybe top 10 stays, and bottom 10 related out with other league champions qualifying in. Arsenal are not a team that deserve to be in a "Super" league at the moment. I assume this will be controversial, but if the league is inevitable, at least find a way to implement it better than it's planned current version.

(Urgh i think i posted this earlier in the wrong post so il try and remember everything) I dont think this competition is inherently a bad idea. It will absolutely further skew finances but hey...Only issue is that it is football without consequenses which renders pretty much all other competitions useless. I'd create the Super League but connect it to the rest of the football pyramid. So how does one qualify...Use the Uefa coefficients. This would make it the hardest league to get into and also to get relegated(reward for consistency in Europe if you wanna be diplomatic)Basically you get the exact same clubs you'd expect to be invited to the exclusive super league. Have it be a 20 team league that will work as described with playoffs. Meanwhile the CL remains as is, no need for the expansion. This keeps all these competitions relevant, the CL,the Europa, and the national leagues. The only difference is overcoming the coefficient is harder, but it can be done. RB Leipzig are 20th and they were created like...yesterday. So if you do well and overtake a team you get into the super league. For someone like Kroenke who wants to just participate and get money,it means the incentives to be competitive are there and they dont get what they want. The competitions all remain relevant. And while it may take a while for a team to be relegated it would still be possible. I know that this is kind of feeding the beast...but i dont think its inherently a bad idea to see the likes of PSG and Bayern go at it regularly. I like those calibre games. It allows the brand name teams to compete in their own lil exclusive competition with atleast some measure of competitiveness that will keep the other competitions interesting for advertisers and sponsors and fans frankly. I know there is issue of scheduling but im thinking we say teams in Europe and Super League play u23 till the QF rounds if they reach it in local cup comps. It allows the other teams possible access to trophies and Europe through that route which is now rarely available cause the rebel group almost always win the local cup ties. They also want to blood their young players so it would allow them this in a real competition with real men. I know id watch to see which of our youngsters are good enough. I know this would not be well met but i think its more feasible. Thoughts Clive,Tim,Paul,Elliot(yall could be Jesus' disciples with those names🤣🤣)

Never mind the finances, there’s other ways to manifest global club competitions to create new revenue. That aside, the point is this forgets the very cultural fabric that football is entwined with, we believe the underdog can win, we believe David can beat Goliath, we respect the history of notts county or wolves as much as we do our own club. We believe success should be earned. This is a sport not a spectacle. Put on a concert if you need that

I'm not saying I'm in favor of this btw. Just trying to be realistic about the cause and effects.....

Madrid and Barcelona have a collective 2bn in debt and Madrid lost 400m last year. United has 500m in debt (plus or minus). This is a financial bailout by private equity. We all got drunk during the party. Lets not complain too much about the hangover.

Great, mature discussion here. I find some of the outrage laughable, quite frankly. These supporters weren't complaining when their clubs were perpetuating a completely unsustainable financial models. Every ESL club wanted to win the 'transfer' trophy. Liverpool fans weren't complaining when FSG took over and won them a CL and PL (by spending).

My former college roommate is a die hard hammers supporter from New York and we had some good London derbies together. If this goes through I’ll drop a cannon for a hammer

“Remember who you are what you are and who you represent”

Thanks for allowing us to process this in discussion. You guys get it

Unfortunately this is real life dipping its head into our escape out of real life. I played and watch football for an escape. The owners don't care about us fans! We need to unite people!

Greedy and corrupt UEFA, FIFA and FA abusing the quote "for the fans". All of them doesnt care at all for the fans.

Great pod! While Arseblog (and so many others) have pretty much just emoted, you guys have had a proper discussion. Thank you.

This mirrors the society we’ve largely let go unhindered and unchecked for decades.

Spot on, its the same in every corner of society. Millions of fans can't prevent this robbery by a wealthy few, somehow legalised due to economic structure in this world. One day nature will restore this balance and its not gonna be pretty. That's not going to happen over a game of football, which probably is a good thing. We shouldn't let Arsenal as a business get us, the community is still good.

Spot on with the Eisenhower military industrial complex comparison Paulinho

Excuse me for welling up at the wenger intro

Capitalism has long been going this way, supposed 'free markets with competition' are really just monopolies and elites grouping together to protect their own and extract as much profit and power as possible. The fan rebuttal has been inspiring, hopefully working together we can make this a turning point to restore football to people, to make it about quality sport that distributes it's finances for grassroots, future generations and fair competition

LA Arsenal incoming

Been waiting for this content all day!!

What club do we all start following? RIP Arsenal.
