Elliot is joined by Tim and Paul for an instant reaction that lacks a bit of structure but has a bit of jazz (you'll get it later). There's sort of some headlines, stock rising and stock falling. Plenty of Elliot whining.

I feel like our fan base is so ridiculously negative sometimes and it’s quite annoying.

Has Bellerin always been this bad defensively

I actually don’t think Arteta is doing very much with the Arsenal attack, and it might be on purpose. One of the things I learned as a coach is that the best managers start by building a team’s ability to defend and their defensive shape. Getting a team to defend properly from front to back is very difficult and it takes a long time to make it stick. My sense is that Arteta is 100% focused on the defensive work and isn’t even spending any time on the attack. I believe that once he has gotten us to a good place as a defensive team, he will eventually focus more on the attack, which is much easier to do, especially for this team. It’s actually pretty clear to see from our stats, structure, and match results. Many have already pointed out that this is the kind of match we would usually lose by multiple goals, and I think that’s a key component of what Arteta is building. A new coach cannot instantly build an attacking and a defensive culture at once - you start with one and then move to the other. We won’t see this complete project for a few more months, I think, so trying to judge Arteta on these performances will miss the complete picture. IMO, focusing on the defense first is the right move, especially when we have Auba and Pepe and Laca up front, because they can figure out how to score goals while the coach continues to work on the defensive shape. This may be a stretch, but I wonder if that’s also part of why Özil isn’t featuring yet this season. I can see how a free-playing midfield like that could make it more difficult for Arteta to instill that defensive culture - it’s definitely an extreme move, if true, but that’s the best I got right now. It’s possible that last season was crisis mode and Arteta needed to do whatever was required to get us to win games - he simply didn’t have the time or luxury to build a culture, he just had to win games by any means necessary. This season, he has a clean slate so he’s doing things his way.
I’m curious to hear Clive’s thoughts on this since he’s also a coach.

Up until Arteta started to get us organised recent meetings clearly showed a gulf in class. We were treated as equals by them for the first time in ages. We were never going to finish above city or Liverpool. What matters are the games against Spuds, United, Leicester and Chelski and everyone else. If we fail to get points against Leicester criticism is more valid.

Really confused by this conversation. It was mentioned recently on this pod that the game is moving more and more towards transition. This game appeared to be two teams fighting for a transition goal while desperately trying not to give the other team a chance to catch them on their own transition. It became a very cagey affair, but I wouldn't want or expect anything else from the team. Only a point or three.

The question I have is if Arteta can't find a tactical way to fix the lack of chance creation, does the choice of Partey over Aouar look even worse if we had that choice? I also feel really sorry for Pepe because I think he is a victim of Arteta's conservatism, my hot take is that Pepe would do alot better for more attacking teams, I think the lack of chances makes his every action have more space to criticise because there are so few.

Yeah structure at the back and a bit of jazz up front is the tweak we need. Gotta get players into their natural position

totaly agree with Elliot. Only few moves that worked like the saka chance was from more organic attacking and players trying stuff on their own instead of trying to control every single pass in the move to come off exactly precisely

No argument here. I completed agree

Love Arteta, but I feel he is being conservative in situations that don't call for it. Saka needs to be further up the park. Auba does not have the skills set to play winger effectively, and seeing him receive the ball and he has to pass it you just know its likely it won't happen, he won't beat his man either. I suppose the fact that I'm frustrated we didn't get anything from City away shows progress, but we should be more adventurous. Even with that starting 11, we should have tried a lot more rotation. Willian dropping in a bit deeper, Auba going middle and Saka at wing. When we did that against Sheffield we won the game!
