Page 7 Inks and Flats

It's 1am and my brain is pretty melted on this, but I've been dying to get to a stage where I could send you all an update on the page.

Here goes. The Inks and Flats.

I KNOW I goofed up on this, with just how hard I've let myself get on it. It's a LOT of visual noise, that I hope will soften when I bring it into photoshop later? But still a failure in restraint... Next; shading for the hero character, and, very... very fast shading for the background. I might not even shade the background middle panel tbh. I'm desperate to get to the end of this one.

Lessons learned/told to me; I need to learn how to just draw 'shapes of background people', while I still think drawing FULL people for the last panel here makes the punchline work better, I could have done the middle panel ones as shapes. and it would have been better for me and my sanity.

I also have to learn how to use negative space in an environment.

I'm chalking a lot of this up to lessons learned. A page shouldn't ever take this long, and I'm holding myself to too high of a standard/ambition. Still, gotta see this one through and think of ways of short-handing the next one too.

I hope you all dig it so far? Hoping to finish it before the end of the month.

Haha YAY! Thank you Jhey! I was a little sore about it last night - but there's so much genuinely to be excited about - I think she's a cutie, and I DO love making her tease our boy =D

Amadose

Yeah, that was pretty much what I was thinking. I don't envy you working with a Zootopia setting though, because everything wants to be bright and colorful; I'm sure it's a struggle to try to tamp some of it down. But that happens in nature too: you can have a very earthy, vibrant setting like a forest or jungle, but the tones still start to mute and blend as you go back. You'll get there.

That 'oh my god everyone knows I'm caged under my clothes' is such a real reaction when you're just getting into chastity 🀣 I love how 'real' and tactile your storytelling is, and the secret to that is to have these genuine reactions and responses. I love this comic so much, Ama πŸ”₯ (P.s. Judy looks perfectly erotic and stylish in that outfit)

jhey

AW heck =D I think so tooooo. thank you Al!

Amadose

judy is so sexy with that outfit and nick is just too cute

AL871

You're definitely able to do a huge range of different designs after this XD

Diego P

That's a lovely way to look at it, thank you Diego! Looking at the success of this page; I DID have a lot of fun drawing up characters. It gives me a lot more faith that I could do commissions or something in the future. Originally I started this comic with Judy and Nick almost as a refrence-crutch to learn to get better with.

I think this hits me the most: ' I'm sure you'll learn them with time. ' I've FELT that what I was doing was incorrect, but I'd just stuck to my routine, and pushed through. Instead of, taking a pause when I knew I might be overdoing it, to explore easier softer ways to do that panel... Using the skillset I have, without trying to pick up fresh ones. I'm a little nervous to dive into the lighting; I figure... I'll do a cast light/shadow from the outside, make the interiors kinda dark and muted down, and pop Judy and Nick up and out of it with a lighter value... We'll see where the chips fall - I'm ready to finish this one out, and move onnnn =)

Amadose

Haw! I keep thinking it might be TOO skimpy... but figure Nick helped pick out the outfit and he'd have suggested all kinds of sexy clothes =D

Aw that's lovely to hear this morning - I was feeling a little sore from how visually noisy it was feeling. Sort of thought I'd let myself down on this one! So thank you!

Amadose

The way I see it, even if this was a failure of restraint, you are leveling up as an artist at immense speed, The quality keeps improving and you'll get to the point when you can take advantage of all you've learned here and be unstoppable.

Diego P

On the one hand, yes I'm sure there are more economical ways to do this, and I'm sure you'll learn them with time. On the other, as an artist myself, and one who's going through "the loop" myself on my own piece at the moment, (the one where it's great, and then it's shit, and then it's great and then it's shit), and someone who HASN'T been staring at this particular image for hours: It's fine. It's good. You're good. Things often look bleh when the flats first go on. This has the potential to look really luscious once the shading and a little lighting is in. Yes, varying the detail would have helped with visual noise and keeping attention on Nick and Judy, but you can get a lot of the same effect with with lighting. I can't tell you how many times that's saved my ass; lighting covers a multitude of sins. Also I agree with another commenter, good lord is that Judy outfit doin' things.

wolfcoffee

OMG, Judy in that last panel! She’s so cute! And yes, she dresses hot. Totally agree w Sir Siroc!

patient_zaero

Loving the look. Glad you're putting in the extra detail for the crowded space, even if they do take longer. And Jude in that outfit is Hot~ ❀️

Aw thank you Mouse! I'll... figure it out. I think it's the timeline that causes the most friction for me. I don't think it's good for me to work on a page past a month - I have a tendency to over work. I'm learning lessons, and I hope this one pops when I start to play with it in photoshop! As for now; lighting quick shades! THEN photoshop.

Amadose

Seeing you describe it, yeah the middle panel being more a "mass of people" would make sense, especially with the sharp contrast of Nick suddenly being aware of every individual person around them. The effect works both ways, but the detailed full characters on last panel really does sell it. I can FEEL the sensation of abruptly remembering im in public after kinda tuning out the world for a bit. Also... Judy's outfit is amazing

Mouse

Ahhh yeah!? Means a lot to hear - you know how to dress her so well! Honest to god this page... I don't know why I did so many characters hahaha.

Amadose

dude, Judy in that top is DOING something to me
