Nick Caged - Roughs page 6-8

This was entirely too much work, haha! I knew I was being ambitious, but gosh, it was so hard to figure out how I wanted to get this short scene to play out, it really plagued me for a while! How to get them onto the Monorail fastest, and how to move into the playful teasing moment. Trying to figure out a '!!!' moment too, was really though for my brain; if you draw them SUPER cartoony you can get away with really over-the-top expressions, but if you try to draw them a little more on-modle it's hard to pull that off. I re-roughed page 7 so many times 0_0

There is still so much here that I want to refine, clean up and redraw. But I'm trying my best to leave as much as I can for the pencils stage. The less I get caught in the weeds the better; so much of this work was finding references and poses I wanted to squeeze in, in a way that made the panel feel tight and busy and interesting, without it all being too crazy.

Everyone I've shown this to thinks I'm a touch mad for trying to do such a busy scene... But, you guys... I've been looking at the BlackSad books, and he does not shy away from things like this, and I want to hold myself to the idea that I'm trying my harder with each page, gonna try to be the best I can... maybe it's too much? Maybe it's just enough? Still, it's rare when I get these guys outside of the bedrooms, so I think it's kind of fun to want to make the world a little richer and jam every panel with as much fur as I can.

When I actually start on all of this - I won't be over-drawing the backgrounds like I usually do; So much of this is bodies in the monorail that I'm only going to be spot-drawing the backgrounds that peek past the bodies. I'm also aiming to keep this monorail to medium-sized zootopians, as I figure the large ones would have a different monorail, and the smaller ones ride in a smaller compartment on the train (this is based on the monorail we briefly see from the movie).

I think too that I'll try scaling my document up 50% more; to get a bit more pixel depth. Pray for my tablet, that was previously already giving me RAM warnings haha 0_o

Okay I gotta dash to a friend's wedding. Tuesday, I'll crack into the pencils or page 6! I hope you are as hyped as I am. I'm genuinely excited to get that 1st panel penciled =D
