Ties That Bind - Page 15 (Pencils)
Added 2022-11-02 20:15:33 +0000 UTCPencils crushed me this week! After how smoothly the last pages of pencils went for me, it really took me off guard!? I thought I'd leveled up and was gonna have an easy time with this page. Instead, I was coming back each evening going 'woof' this all needs a redraw'.
A couple of things happened in the process! You might be able to tell by looking at the Roughs, that I changed up the game plan a bunch. That top panel was supposed to be a closeup, and the middle panel was a sort of over-the-shoulder angle of Judy and Owen kissing. But as I started to pencil it out (which I left in so you can see in the middle of the picture), I realized, how similar panel 1 felt to the previous page's close-up, and that for panel 2 I'd drawn almost the exact angle a few years ago for Chapter 5, page 14 (it gave me such de-ja-vu as I sketched it, that I had to look it up!). In the end, it was a sort of blessing as I wasn't really feeling that panel to begin with; with the content of what was being said (an Owen monologue) we really needed more of Owen's face on the page.
What I landed at, is just fattening up panel 1; pulling the camera back enough that we can SEE Owen revel in the new position and pose, followed by a face close-up. It's his monologue; now it feels like he's got room enough to shine!
As for the millions of shoulders and arms, feet, and faces I had to draw in order to feel like things looked 'right'... well I got no excuses; I just couldn't find my groove. I hear it happens like that; ups and downs. Fingers crossed the inks slide together easily!

I'm still not 100% happy - like I sort of feel like I could do a better camera angle for panel 3, or I could have been more ambitious with panel 2 (like my original intent). The new direction has its positives; more of Owen's faces helps connect the words to the person. Gives those words an 'edge'. And the 3rd panel's repeated pulled-out camera (which reflects an early panel (page 8)) DOES help ground the comic a bit. It's just... compared to the original rough it feels less ambitious?! But sometimes you gotta call it good enough - and it's not like I can't use those ambitious panels for later =) I feel like I keep learning and progressing and one of the important things to do is try to stay constant; I don't want to spend more than a week on pencils, and gotta move forward! 'The sassy glance back' Yeah this ones for meeeee- that predatory glance just slays me =D

That first panel in particular really does it for me. The sassy glance back, Owen dominating the frame and keeping his weight on Judy 👌 lovely poses all around. Finding the groove is daunting but I appreciate you’re finding the time to keep pushing until you find something you’re happy with. Keep up the good work and maybe Patreon will notify me on time instead of days after. 💀 I want to see what you cook up while it’s steaming hot.
