Owen's War Face
Added 2022-05-26 16:46:39 +0000 UTCUpper-tiered Pals - I keep fiddling with things, but can't settle on Owen's snap-gleefully-mean face. It's got to convey so much! Excitement, meanness, authority, but also... playfulness.
I've been redrawing it with some reference screenshots from the movie; in order to figure out the teeth situation: something I want to try and get better with. Jeez, they gave Nick some big molars!
Anyways I got lots of IRL work to dive into in a sec, so let me know which of the Owen faces feels right to you (I know it's only subtle differences, but follow your gut!), and it'll help save me hours of flip-flopping later tonight when I dive back in =)

I liked C a lot - but did figure people would read it poorly. I'll keep the sketch handy for the future; but I think in this moment, A or B has a more Owen spin to it.

At least, that's how it reads to me, so I'd probably say "any of them except C, if you want to leave a hint of playfulness in amongst the meanness". If you feel confident in making him look truly hard-ass in that individual panel though, before using the surrounding panels for the playful context, C could absolutely work. :D

Next up - I need to figure out those middle panels 0_0 A tied-sheath closeup. How on earth does it worrrrk (I know I've drawn it before but I want to improve and get it looking right-er)

For me, while C doesn’t show the playfulness (at least on the surface) I love that it feels like an immediate home-run by Owen at Nick’s request for him to be more mean. As June put it, he’s “leaning into the scary predator side of things.” I also assume we’ll see him ease back up and after care. Honestly I fucking love them all. Each one gives me the chills in a different way. I’m still going to be sold on the smirk regardless, especially given that it also provides Owen a slightly sadistic enjoyment in owning Nick and watching him squirm.
