It's so interesting how much the show is different from the manga, given how much I love the show. Makes me wonder if I would even like the manga

Now their will-they-wont-they story has got to the 'they will,' I can reveal Tababe was only introduced 1/2 way through the manga (Hachi's accident and self-doubt happen before she is even brought into the story!). Quite the change to make her the first character we see in the show, but i like the changes the show makes (changes from source material aren't always bad). Edel the part-time worker and some other characters are only found in the show not the manga, so would technically be "filler" to a lot of people, but i think they're still really well done.
The skepticism of psychotherapy from the show seems silly to me too, but it is pat for the course for the period; it could also be like "couples in fiction are often opposites despite that not working IRL because it works better as a story" thing you mentioned, with therapy not being very interesting as a solution to mental issues in a story compared with the kind of thing stories usually go for (even if IRL it works better).
