Couldn't attend live, but I can definitely agree that this arc was a drag. Outside of Ultima being a kooky old powerful mentor, the rare Todd from Pokemon Snap recognition, and Gold being amazing, there wasn't much to enjoy. And Todd was just exposition man so that isn't even a point in it's favor. I think the Emerald arc could've been much more fun if there was a formula that went "Frontier poses dumb, overblown challenge; Emerald go-go-gadgets through most of it to everyone's shock; faces a challenge against the head that requires a single Rented/calmed Pokemon to teach the working with Pokemon moral." Imagine he just throws in a substitute doll or Poke Toy or even himself as his "Pokemon". Now I'm just imagining a Battle Dome fight where Emerald out-contests Ruby through Pokemon imitations alone and Ruby forfeits and tries to recruit him as a member of the team. The manga is at it's best when battles are based on deception, tricks, or comedy than raw strength, and this should've showed that. As for FRLG, Giovanni should've just hired a private detective to find Silver, skill issue tbh. For genuine fixes, I think the point about focusing the arc on Blue and Silver is the best thing they could do. Here's an idea: Blue tasks Silver to track down Deoxys while she's visiting her parents; Silver and Giovanni run into each other, unaware of each other's identity; they work together to capture Deoxys while coming to terms with the realization that they are related and Giovanni is part of Team Rocket. Just spitballing, but anything would be better than Red being made as flat as an ironing board.

2024-06-03 17:13:06 +0000 UTCOhhhhh man. I'm doing the reading for this week and I'm not gonna lie: I'm starting to flag. I just got to the part where they introduce an EVIL SUPERCOMPUTER that's immune to EVERY POKEMON ATTACK INCLUDING MEWTWO... for three pages, just so they can hype up, fuckin', *Porygon2*. The line between "written for ten-year-olds" and "written BY a ten-year-old" is starting to blur more than usual. We were gonna, like... take a break from this at some point, right? What was the plan for that again?

Maybe it was just the mystery being slightly better than GSC and going through the Battle Frontier faster than I thought he would, although it REALLY tries to cram in a lot at the end.
