The Wire Episode 3-11

TV tropes would call this a "Wham Episode"

The Wire Episode 3-11

Comments

Yeah I wonder how much the star aspect of Idris clouds my judgement on this. I'm as subject to that kind of thing as anybody else even though I try not to be. This is why we see people fawn over Spike and Damon even though the characters are horrible people. The actors' personal charisma clouds are minds

You've probably heard everything by now, but I didn't have any bias because its was Idris Alba coming into the show when I first watched it (Senior year of HS, about a year before I watched all of BB) and the best way I can describe my feelings towards Stringer by the time this episode came around, is physicsl/seething hatred along the lines of what I felt watching Walter White on season 5a and 5b. Where they're compelling characters and make the show dynamic, but I their actions/ethos and the way I felt the show was pointing was just towards wanting the watcher to want them in the mud. So when he was killed at the end I was rejoicing, like I wanted Stringer off my screen and had thawed on my earlier anti-Avon sentiments as the luster of Stringer's "idealism" had worn off by then, but Avon's charisma, knowledge of self, and what "honor" a gangster could have that he showed had shone through with characters like Cutty and Slim amongst others. Plus Avon's actor Wood Harris is decently large in black cinema, so as far as billing goes it wasn't an either or thing with him and Idris in my mind.

Yeah, you're right. I would have fallen for the same trap because I've lived in the business world for 30 years so I see everything that way. But that doesn't work in this world. It LOOKED like it worked early on in the show. People were listening to his business concepts and raising their hands the the chair would recognize them. But that was all a mirage. It was never gonna last long term. Avon won because he was lying to himself.

funny to me when people downplay avon thinking stringer is so smart because avon was definitely right. the main difference between him and string is that at least he knows his place. at the end of the day he can’t pull that “it’s just business” card, he’s a drug dealer. stringer tried to apply his business classes to the game and people usually wanna root for him but this episode just comes to show his goal is unrealistic. avon did a lotta shit but as brother said “what got you here is your name and reputation” he knows who he is. he’s a gangster. but stringer did some fuck shit throughout the show, killing people, lying on people, framing others and claimed it was all just “business” he had to know at some point it would come back to bite him.

Oh right I forgot because the Williams death blew everything outta my mind. I'll address it next episode which I'm recording today so i won't forget. Also, what you say about Stringer makes sense.

yep great actor after the wire i just googled for stuff he was in thats why i started Board Walk Empire Rest in Peace Michael K Williams ;/ what about my comment from last week didnt you wanna talk about it? i think it might have been just real confusion and not expecting this qustion about where he would be maybe cause avon didnt ask him that in a while but his reasoning might also have seemed true to Stringer cause he now seemed to be out of the 100% businessman killing clay davis and so on so from his point of view avon might wanna reconnect more cause he could be a soldier again like him. so i think it was just real confusion and he needed to give the right answer cause he was just waiting till the police gets avon after that all would have been normal again for stringer
