Patreon engagement?

//EDIT// Thank you guys so much for your time in giving me your feedback! You all gave great responses and I feel that I have a better idea of what is expected.

I'll do my best to respond to comments more when I can and I was thinking it would be fun to bring back polls? I used to do full color illustrations based off monthly polls and it was fun at the time but it turned out to be a LOT of work on top of doing multiple comics. But! Simplifying it to just sketches would be much more doable and I think it'd be fun to give it a try~ I'll think of some ideas and give you guys a poll some time soon~ c:

Also! My wife and I have a discord! We've reserved it for patrons only for now so if you'd like to go check it out, here it is! https://discordapp.com/invite/sdRJ6kA

Hey everyone! So every once in a while I get exit surveys that say "creator wasn't engaging like I expected" and unfortunately there's never any comment added or explanation as to why and... I wish I knew! Having a better clue to what I can fix could be super helpful.

I'm writing this to ask y'all what "engagement" means to you and if I meet those expectations or not?

I pledge to a handful of creators as well and as a supporter to those artists I personally feel that "engagement" simply means consistent posting of what is promised and good communication! That's just my personal interpretation so I'm curious what you guys think!

To start, a few things I'm aware of that I can improve might be that I can stream more, especially for the $5 tier and that I could respond to comments more (I'm kinda shy but I can try harder haha;;;) so... agreements? disagreements? suggestions? Let me know! <3

I don't think of Patreon as a store. Essentially, it's like donating to pacific radio, or the like. I'm promoting your art being in the world, but I am also accepting gifts being offered to people that donate. Art is different from selling office supplies, because it's partly the artist's personality that is being appreciated. So, there is always some element of wanting a slightly personal engagement with the artist (exchanging words). Artists have fans. Office supply chains don't. The artist doesn't owe anyone anything because of that. If an artist makes a point of ignoring their fans, that would be a reason to complain about engagement. I haven't seen that with you.

All the comments here already said what I could- you're doing fine. It was just a whiner, or someone who misclicked a box. I've misclicked a few boxes in my day. Don't worry about it, you're working hard.

Coldau

I think you are doing fine. You nailed what I expect in your comments.

I don't know. I only ever leave that as a note when the creator's main page leaves a specific set of expectancies that subscription doesn't deliver. You've been delivering exactly what you promise and communicating upcoming projects and warning tags and everything. I'm not sure what else somebody could want for engagement?

occultnix

i agree with you. if a creator is posting like promised, and communicate with us if theres a change in that, then thats all im concerned about. youre doing a great job πŸ’šπŸ’š

I’ve really enjoyed the tier I am in. And I will say that joining the discord or seeing a few the streams really added another layer! Your time commitment to various projects and seeing your process (of course talking to fellow fans online) has really helped me feel very engaged. But I understand that streaming can be another tier grade. And even more interaction is a bigger time commitment from you. When you give a lot. So not sure! Thanks for thinking to post this. Maybe just talking about projects. Or making a blog like post every now and then would be p neat?

I'm just going to "ditto" this because there isn't anything I could add that hasn't already been said.

Honestly, I wonder if they were in a lower tier and expected more for the money. I think you are really good about engaging your patreons (according to the tier I am in.) Maybe you can set up a pool for each tier to get a better idea. But otherwise, I think your doing a great job! I left an artist once for lack of engagement and it was because I paid monthly and only got 1 post of 1 panel a month, sometimes none at all. To me, that is lack of engagement. Your doing a great job and I look forward to your next posts! Keep up the awesome work πŸ‘Œ

I think you're pretty wonderful and consistent, I love following you and am really pleased with everything! Your patreon is a treat and I feel lucky to be able to see all your great art! You inspired me to start drawing properly again.

Just wanted to add: if you feel like adding more thing to the rewards tiers, more power to ya. If you feel you can do it, then by all means. Just remember to respect your own limits. Don't make yourself sick just because "people want more". People will always want more. But you're people too, not a robot. Non-selfish people who understand that there's more than just themselves and their own needs on the planet will understand that.

You work on several comics at once, many of which I haven't yet seen. That's the type of productivity I can only dream of having. Plus the WIPs I don't have access to because as much as I want to support as many people as possible, I have to watch my wallet. I can only assume that the "lack of engagement" that the person mentioned was code for "I want more explicit pictures, every day, for cheap", because that's usually what people complaining about erotica artists are about. Either that or it's code for "the artist wasn't catering for MY extremely specific fetishes and therefore is a bad artist." Truth is, since they didn't bother specifying, we'll never know. We can only speculate. Was it the number of updates? I see new things from you very regularly. I don't see an issue here. Was it the subject matter of your comics? Welp we all got different tastes. You cannot cater to everybody's desires. Was it because they had to pay *money* to get access to it? Imagine that. People getting paid for their work. How dare they. I personally have no problem with your content, pricing, and productivity. If I had an advice to give, it would be: don't sweat it. Especially if the person complaining doesn't give you specific reasons. You're not psychic, you cannot scry people's brain to make them happy. You have 500+ patrons on this platform. Not counting the people following you elsewhere. Unless you get that kind of message daily, I don't think you really have anything to worry about concerning your work, pricing or productivity. Some people just like to whine, I guess.

I think your engagement is good. I always love reading all your little captions! I would always love to see even more sketches and such from you but I'm happy with what you post and how often. <3

I think you post often, compared to other creators I support! Maybe the others wanted more social engagement from you, but you fulfill the promises of your tiers so I don't see the issue.

Tina

You are doing good but people probably want likes or to talk to you

Silian

They may have wanted polls? That’s the only thing I can think of. Some of the other artists I pledge to will do monthly polls on what their Patreon’s would like to see them draw usually what I’ve seen from artists who are as busy as you are is just a simple sketch. Or they could mean replies to comments.

LoreAmore

I agree with your interpretation on engagement is. You not only update but also post WIPs and processes. Not sure what else πŸ€”

Anastea

I think what you wrote is pretty on the money for the summation of what engagement means. Maybe they were expecting more posts? Or updates? Not sure but I think you can always try doing a poll to see what people want and you can get a better idea of what works best
