This one follows the usual process for my work, sketch > flat colours > rough shading > merge it all together and render it. I had all the roughs done several months ago and I just picked it up again to try and practice rendering detailed fur.
The main thing for me is I'm still trying to figure out how to balance the amount of detail I go into. Don't want too much because it just becomes noise and over working it ruins the artwork. The plan for this one was to try and stay more zoomed out for most of the rendering process to make sure I've always got the full canvas in mind and I'm not overworking areas. I'm also trying to vary up the size of the strokes and shapes I'm using for the details. Less important areas need less detail and uniform details across the whole painting leads to that noisy texture I'm trying to avoid. I'm just going by feel. If you flip between the last two images in this post and look at the tail you can see what I mean. I went back a day after I'd finished to rework the tail area. I'd done more or less uniform details along the tail which left it looking like a big fuzzy slug. I think going back and using larger, rougher strokes that get less defined as you go further away from the focus of the image works better overall.
It's late as I write this so I'm sorry if it's a bit rambley. I'm finding that trying to package what I'm learning into something that another person will find coherent is a skill unto itself, and I'm lacking in experience there.
I've attached a smaller version of the timelapse video. I saved it out before I realised that Patreon doesn't actually have a video player. The full sized video will be in this month's rewards.
