[NR] No, The System Is Out To Get Us - Chapter 713

Rosha looks between the other two before asking, “So, what now?”
They sit in silence.
Rosha, “Like, we can just go back to me and Courtney exploring while Jason stays back. There’s not really a reason to switch up something that is working.”
The other two look at each other and stay silent for a moment.
Jason speaks up, “We both suspect something.”
Courtney, “Well, given how he is reacting, we probably both suspect the same thing. Mainly, if we try to just hang out like that, the System will throw things at us to cause chaos.”
Jason, “While it was an outside force that trapped us in town? The System had its hands all over the situation.”
Rosha scoffs, “The world doesn’t revolve around us. Why would the System do that?”
Courtney points at Jason, “Well, the System has to know something is up with him at this point.”
Jason shrugs, “Besides that, it isn’t really warping things all that much. At least, not for other players. Most who come to the settlement are simple visitors. Even those idiots we had to take care of, despite having their own homestead, were just visitors. Their guild rotating out who stayed. Were as, we have houses and such.”
Courtney, “Though for me, the biggest thing pointing towards it targeting us is the fact it happened in the settlement, but things didn’t actually start until we were ready.”
Jason, “For me it was the fact that the actual danger stayed around where we could actively assist for so long. Though Courtney’s reason is good as well. The System doesn’t have as much control deeper into here and so it pulled us out to where it can control things.”
Rosha shrugs, “Cool story, but I don’t see why that should change what we’re doing. If it needs us to leave to pull us in, we can just stay here. With the garden, it is well and truly to the point where we can live off the land.”
Courtney raises an eyebrow, “So you’re fine with the chance that after we eventually leave the clearing, we find the settlement in ruins?”
Rosha waves that possibility off. “They would have easily survived without us. We saved a few townsfolk, sure, but this is the front line of the kingdom’s expansion. They aren’t going to abandon it. Besides, I doubt the System would go that far.”
Jason laughs, “I doubt the System would care if the entire kingdom died. Oh sure, if it was lost to the Deep Wilds, that would bother it. But the kingdom being destroyed? Eh, it becomes a place for adventurers to explore. A place to raise monsters for them to fight. And eventually? Someone else will come along and conquer the wilds to raise a new kingdom. Because there are a lot of kingdoms out there.”
Courtney, “Of course, it is always possible the System simply cuts our clearing off. Snip the settlement and suddenly this little ocean of order is floating free. Then once we die or end up deep enough? We respawn back in NeoRealm proper and don’t have a place to close up in.”
Rosha sighs, “So, you both must have ideas of what to do? After all, we just set this place up. There is no way I want to abandon it already and I suspect neither of you do either.”
Courtney, “The simple solution is for us to delve into the shallower regions more. So far, you and me have been going straight out into the Deep Wilds so the System likely can’t keep track of us. All while Jason putters around the clearing.”
Jason shakes his head, “I don’t think that will work. Rather, we need to regularly visit the settlement and continue to do tasks for our favorite siblings. That gives the System a direct line to use. The biggest problem will end up being my level. I need to focus on stat growth, all while I’m getting closer to the bottleneck. You two can focus on helping Siegfried, while I get what non-combat stuff I can from Helina.”
Courtney, “Why do you believe my answer wouldn’t work?”
Jason holds up two fingers, “There are a few reasons, but one main reason. It’s me. The System will likely want me out and about. Which is fine in theory, but I’m trying to not level. So, at the very least, I will need to be hitting the settlement. So since that is true, we might as well all head there.”
Courtney sighs, “Okay, yeah, I can see that.”
Rosha, “So, why does the System care? Sure, it does stuff to keep players interested, but there should be an option to putter around in your garden?”
Jason shrugs, “I’m sure more than enough gardening players are out there, puttering around. And maybe we are crazy, but given our history, I’m willing to believe.”
Courtney nods, “While rare, the System can and does single out a player or group. Now just consider how many high-level locals we’ve personally mingled with. Like, we lived with Grey-Tails for a time!
“I’m not saying the System did that for us. Rather, in experiencing what we have, we’ve attracted the System’s attention. And how does the System deal with those that have its attention? Well, it throws events at them. Like what we just experienced.”
Rosha sighs, “I think you’re both a bit paranoid, but I don’t mind heading into town every once in a while. So if we’re going to do this, that’s what my vote is for.”
Courtney, “We can still explore the Deep Wilds. We’re just going to visit the settlement between every trip out.”
Jason nods, “And I do admit, this all smacks of paranoia and seems as if we believe the world revolves around us. Except, in a way? While not us personally, but players in general? Yeah, the world does revolve around us. That’s the point. To most, this is a game, even if it is also their job. The System? It was made to run a game.”
