[NR] Humanity Sucks Sometimes - Chapter 703

Jason frowns, “Like, serious attacks? I would have wild animals sniff around the edges, but nothing I had to go out of my way to attack. Not that often, anyway.”

Courtney sighs, “And as much as I would like to blame your garden, the berries aren’t grown in yet.”

Jason, “Blarg, I guess my portable planter is doing a lot of work for my small garden.”

Courtney raises an eyebrow, “Now, I’m not paying the most attention to your gardening. But your harvest times have been going down. It is gradual. You likely haven’t noticed because of how gradual the times have been going down.”

Jason frowns, “Huh.”

Rosha, “Wait, didn’t you get a thing to help your planter?”

It takes a moment before Jason facepalms, “Oh, right! I’ve got a thing that improves the soil when I’m traveling around. It isn’t specific to my planter, but I’m not exactly hauling this garden around with me.”

Courtney, “Now wait, I don’t mean the planter isn’t helping the growth. If anything, your planter was an amazing starting point. Great soil, controlled environment, and I’m sure part of the enchant helps it.

“This plot of soil? Well, forests aren’t known for having great soil. There’s a reason back Before, slash and burn farming was cutting down so much rainforest. There’s not much in that there soil. Good thing there’s magic.”

Jason, “Blarg, magic does a lot of damage by covering so many sins.”

Rosha raises an eyebrow, “What do you mean by that? Like, sure, it allows you to keep growing past when you normally would, but it isn’t a cure all. They still need proper farming techniques.”

Jason shakes his head, “Buts that’s the thing. Just consider slash and burn. We used that irl! It is a destructive and super extractive method which even those using it, know does not lead to long-term farms. Yet it was still used.

“Add magic, especially ‘blessing’ type from some worshipped being? Well, of course, crops don’t grow if the field isn’t blessed! No need to try crop rotation or anything. Pay your tithes and get your field blessed.

“Even if there isn’t some cult around, people would ignore advancing the knowledge of farming in favor of fixing things with power. Remember, knowledge is power and who would want serfs to have power?”

Rosha sticks her tongue out, “Blarg, that sucks.”

Jason shrugs, “Eh, that’s life. You see it a lot and even irl, it is only a recent thing that education has been spread to literally everyone. The whole ‘dark ages’ term that gets thrown around is deceptive and tends to be country or region specific. But there was certainly a point where education went through a bit of a dark age.”

Rosha sighs, “Humanity sucks sometimes.”

Jason laughs, “Everyone sucks sometimes. Just look around us! If someone was reading about our lives, they’d probably have seen most of our interactions with all these different races, right? And if a crowd wasn’t described in detail see it as being made of mostly their own species.

“Like, sure, various places will tend towards elves or dwarves. Sometimes humans, though such places tend more towards being melting pots, if only because of all the mixing humans seem to do, second only to dragons. Still, that’s just natural. A person’s area of focus will be inward to out.

“Themselves, their significant others, to their closest friends and family, regular relations. After that, you get things like their community and the place they live, though not even the entire city at times. Just the local region of the city. And only after that do you start having the bigger concerns like kingdom and race.”

Rosha, “I want people to care about others in general! Even irl, we went through so much turmoil and death! Yet still, corporations suck and even if people as a whole are living better than literally ever before, there are so many rough edges. The fact NeoRealm is the only choice sucks and in the past, being able to play a game for a living was practically a dream!”

Courtney shakes her head, “That isn’t quite true. Being able to PLAY a game? Sure, that was a dream for a lot of people. Though even now, the curse of being able to play for money strikes hard. In the past?

“There were entire countries where things were so bad that playing games and illegally selling on the gold they could make earned them more than an honest, yet could barely feed them. Gold farming wasn’t and isn’t fun. It is work as much as any other job. At least now the gold coins we get are the real money and people don’t have to go through shady middlemen. Oh, and you aren’t moments from losing your account for trying to survive.

“Though we’ve gotten a bit off topic. Jason, I’ve never heard of a solution to the various ailments that can transfer over. Knowing that at least for this, it is the soul being too strong points towards why. Except, there doesn’t seem to be a fix for that. Your body can’t suddenly get tough enough to match it. Your mind isn’t going to magical think faster.”

Jason shrugs, “Well, you can’t ‘fix’ it, because there isn’t anything broken. There are even people who see such effects as being signs of strength.

“Think so fast the world is in slow motion? That just means you’re more able to react to things and think over solutions. Nevermind how alienating this can be.

“Have a body so strong you mind and soul literally can’t adjust your strength to not break things? You must be, like, super strong! Nevermind, once again, how alienating this can be.

“Your soul is so powerful you can see the intentions of others? What amazing insight! But guess what? How alienating.

“And yet when in balance you don’t get those effects. Or rather, you don’t get those penalties. Just because you can control you mind to act like a normal person doesn’t mean you can’t react and think at the speed someone with an equal mental power. Just because you don’t accidentally break doors doesn’t mean you can’t just as easily. Just because you aren’t always seeing auras doesn’t mean you aren’t  noticing them.”
