[NR] Oh, That's A Bit Of Gold - Chapter 688
Added 2025-03-26 10:05:20 +0000 UTCCleaning up after the last fight took the town multiple days. And while the end of the siege meant an end to the barrier, opening up the town to outside help. Which in theory should have helped. It didn’t.
Once people got word out that the barrier was down, random gawkers showed up to bumble around. Oh sure, an official from the kingdom arrived on the wings of a teleportation spell. This isn’t the first Deep Wilds border settlement to break out of the event, but it is the first to face high break undead.
However, one high-ranking official didn’t offset the extra chaos of outsiders showing up to see what they can see. Still, it all calms down eventually and the trio find themselves in front of the council once again. And while only one group out of many people, they would be recognized for their work.
A gray-haired wolfkin, whether by type of wolf or age, holds up a voluminous scroll. They have just finished reciting the last person’s rewards and it is finally time for Jason, Rosha, and Courtney’s turn to find out what they’ll be receiving.
The three-step forward when their name is called and the man begins to go over their accomplishments. “Assisted with cleaning up the traveller bandits and protecting what could have been vital food supplies. Fought on and in front of the wall. Special commendation for protecting the civilian bunker. Silver rewards for Courtney and Rosha. High silver rewards for Jason.”
Of course, that wasn’t everything they were known to have helped with. Siegfried had personally met with them before this ceremony to go over what would be mentioned and what they are actually recognized as having done. This is just the short list of what the council felt needed to be announced. Otherwise, they’d be here all day announcing everyone’s assistance.
And besides, the more important recognition comes moments later when the trio are back in position.

Which is quite exciting! Though the further Jason got on his path, the more he wondered how long such System rewards would work. After all, what good is a marrow transplant now when he doesn’t generally have bone marrow? Either way, the amount of gold pieces Jason just received is phenomenal no matter how you slice it.
Jason pays more attention to the rewards ceremony for a second, but yeah, still droning on. Like, nothing against ceremonies like this. You need to do this kind of thing to officially recognized people, but yeah. It can take a while. Jason turns back to his System provided rewards, most of which he can’t claim quite yet.
After all, where would he put a ton of animal furs? There is, however, two things to look up right away. His new titles, one of which interested him more than the other, so Jason checked the other first.
{
Civilization’s Defender - When defending others in an area recognized as a frontier zone you gain a bonus to defense against non-weapon damage
}
Jason mentally nods to himself. That was about what he expected. Well, not “exactly” exactly, but close enough. He had figured it might call out specifically the edges of the System. Though this is the more generic option, even if it did seem to leave some loopholes for what it meant by “civilization”.
In theory, given the wording, it would allow him to defend a wild animal against a person trying to duke it out with fisticuffs. Then again, Jason is more than familiar with the fact the System didn’t really consider barehanded attacks as proper combat. The expectation being you would use at least gloves or brass knuckles if you were serious.
Jason pauses. ‘Wait a second.’ The title was classic System, but why should he put up with that? Most of the time, he didn’t have any say in things, but this had a deeper connection to him.
The System thought it could saddle him with a lukewarm definition of civilization? Oh sure, Jason can get behind the whole “frontier” restriction. That is clearly what the title was based on and not just policing a town. Though that could equally be seen as defending civilization if those doing so aren’t corrupt or negligent.
But as for what Civilization was? Who could be Civilized? This title very much took the System’s biases and boiled it down to the simplest and most corrupted ideal. Though it served an important purpose. It reminded him that the System isn’t some Heaven’s Will like he knew of from his last life.
At best, it seemed the System is a Realm Lord. Even if it might have started closer to the other. At this point? The universe that held NeoRealm had exceeded the System’s control. Concepts and Laws that exceeded the System are out there.
Jason maintained his posture, but exhaled deeply, not quite a sigh as that would be rude. This is another thing that would come after the ceremony was over. Though the chance of a breakthrough in his concepts was so close! It is tantalizing and all he had to do is reach out and grab it.
However, he still had one last thing to check, the other title. What is up with abhorrent slayer? Though it is easy to guess that if the defender title didn’t deal with things from outside the System’s control, this one probably was.

Yep, sounds wonky, fixed now. I went with "Assisted with cleaning up the traveller bandits and protecting what could have been vital food supplies."
