I'm Better Now - Covid Free

As the title says, I've lived through having covid. It sucked, but here we are. Part of that here we are is that I basically didn't work half of last month. I've gotten some money from my mom so I can pay rent which was a slight worry since rent comes out the first business day of the month and Patron takes a few days to payout.

1: Side track, speaking of Patreon, I've not done anything with the new subscription payment method where people pay on the day they signed up. Any opinions on it? I don't really care one way or another, though admittedly seeing it all process in one day gives a nice jolt of, "Oh hey, I can buy food" feelings. I've mostly just sat on it so others could test it and I likely wouldn't switch to it until the start of next year.

Anyway, back on track. I've seen some suggestions that I could do donation incentives to release more chapters. I do not have the time to actually write more chapters at the moment. The fact I managed to get both chapters for this weeks D'sP release done and scheduled the night before has more to do with having time because of covid than anything else.

2: So I have a large backlog of chapters, but that is part of the early access that patrons get. Would you all mind if I did some donation incentives for RoyalRoad and Scribblehub to release some of that backlog?

I've seen similar things before and was thinking about two options. One is a starting price of $50 donated for a chapter of D'sP and two of NR, then double the price each time the goal is met. The other is a straight $100 for every chapter of D'sP and two of NR released. This isn't one person donating it all at once, but rather a cumulative goal from everyone donating.

Edit: I would be limiting how many unlocks they can get. I just didn't originally include this bit because the original idea of doubling costs would mean the sixth unlock would cost $1,600 on top of the $1,550 spent on the previous unlocks. Anyway, even on the straight $100 to unlock I would limit it to ten extra chapters of D'sP and twenty of NR.

Finally, while I have your attention, there is a third thing to go over. I've been rolling this idea over in the back of my head for a while now and it would be a complete update of my tiers. Obviously if you're already in a tier, I'm not going to be deleting them and it would stay the same, just not available to new patrons.

3: Anyway, the idea is to change from basically two different Patreons for my stories that happen to share the same page, to a Patreon for my writing as a whole. This might not make much sense, so let me explain my idea for the new tier system. The $1 tier would remain the same and then I would have three new tiers. A $3, $7, and $10 tier. Instead of the tiers being split up by the story, they would be split up by how many early chapters they get with equal access to both stories.

The $3 tier would get an extra chapter every third week, the $7 tier every other week like how D'sP currently works, and the $10 tier gets an extra chapter every week. NR suffers a bit under this change with D'sP coming out as the golden child and upgrading to an extra chapter every week.

However, this is just how I've been currently thinking about it and other suggestions would be welcome. For instance, the tiers don't mean that every story I ever write in the future will neatly fit into the 1:3, 1:2, and 1:1 release schedule and I would be fine having a story not match up with it. I'm honestly tempted to start off that way with NR being 1:2 at $3 and 1:1 at $7 with the $10 tier not adding anything. Though just to restate, if you're in a tier already, it won't vanish on you unless you unsub.

That certainly won't be a problem. On D'sP the potentially released chapters won't even hit 200 and NR is so far ahead there aren't enough readers to even come close to dipping below 30 chapters ahead.

for 2 as long as Patron chapters are more than 30 chapters ahead of public/RR it shouldn't be a problem and that donation idea might be good, unfortunately can't say much about it i usulay only do patreon

With number 2, I forgot to mention that I would be limiting how many can be unlocked because I was originally thinking of the doubling unlock. With that the sixth unlock would cost $1,600 on top of the $1,550 already spent on the previous unlocks. For the straight $100 unlock I would have a strict limit of 10 unlocks. As for 3, you're the only commenter that seems to like it. Though most of the others are about the cost. I might try changing up the tier costs and asking again, maybe as a poll.

1, I'll probably wait another month just to make sure it still works. We're only a month in and I want to make certain nothing crazy crops up. 2, I don't plan to allow people to buy up the entire backlog, I just didn't include it in the post because I was mostly thinking of the first example. The sixth chapter of D'sP would cost $1,600 to unlock which would be on top of the $1,550 already spent on the previous unlocks. At that point, people would be better off just spending five bucks to sub on Patreon. For the straight $100 unlock option I would probably limit it to 10 unlocks. 3, I've been thinking about combining the tiers for a while now because at some point, the stories will finish. I don't plan to die with my stories unfinished. This is still a couple years out of course, but it will happen eventually. So I don't want to end up with a bunch of dead tiers, especially since I sort of depend on Patreon right now.

Akhier Dragonheart

The only reason I'm thinking about not having them be separate is because I don't plan to write these stories forever. At some point D'sP and NR will finish so I want to prepare for that. Sure, that is still a few years out, but it will happen eventually.

Akhier Dragonheart

And that is why I am asking right now instead of just doing it.

Akhier Dragonheart

I guess I didn't put it in, but I don't plan to let people buy up all the backlog. I was mostly just thinking of the first version which doubles every time. That adds up quickly and I wasn't expecting people to be able to gather up enough to unlock the sixth D'sP chapter with $1,600 on top of the previous total of $1,550 already donated to unlock the last five chapters. The second method would certainly be limited to something like 10 chapters of D'sP and 20 of NR.

Akhier Dragonheart

For 1 it certainly wouldn’t hurt. 2 as long as at least some chapters are patreon exclusive it’s fine, otherwise what’s the point of patreon. 3 i think it would be better than the current set up.

So, in order: 1: It would help. I can unsubscribe tomorrow, subscribe on 5th, and then Patreon would only take money after I get paid, which would be nice. Not that critical with 1 story but it adds up 2: I don't really mind. I would like it if there would be extra chapters as goals are completed, but it's not like I'm losing access to the chapters when they get posted on RR. 3: I like every option that comes with extra D'sP chapters, but I like the current structure (Probably because I don't read NR), so if you make an extra D'sP tier where I can get that extra chapter, that would be better.

Apoca

I'm poor and limit in money so very personnal view and opinion here but i prefer it stay with a separate storie patreon, im only interested in DsP, i just can't afford 10 dollar instead of 5 to have all DsP chapter update of each month on patreon The suggestion on tier by Tomas is good in my view For the rest of your points i have no real opinion on them :)

Zarik0

I would not recommend. I do not know if I would have subscribed in the first place under that deal. I am very hesitant to go over 5 dollars for one story.

phantom

I don't mind if you did some donation incentives, but there should be some limit, otherwise there would be no point to patreon. And I like separated patreon stories better, alternatively you can leave tiers that are there now and just add one for both stories that is more expensive than one but cheaper than both. Hope I wrote it right and understandable english is my second laguage.
