To answer your question, the bone dragon's purpose is to retrieve the box after each victim opens it and return it to the seller so they can give it to the next person. Not sure why he was stalking Kirsty specifically or why he didn't retrieve the box back immediately after Frank opened it. It doesn't appear in any of the 10 other movies or comic spin-offs, the whole sequence involving him/it was added after the fact because of test audiences.

Another written and directed by Clive Barker is "Nightbreed," an underrated horror classic.

Wally

Oh just to follow up on Simone’s observation where Franks voice doesn’t match his face: the actor who plays Frank, Sean Chapman actually did have his voice dubbed over with voice actor Bob Sessions, in this and the second film.

The Judgey Nuns could be the opening band

YourBigBut

George, you’re a genius. β€œJump Scare Jesus” is now my official new band name. Now I just have to form a band.

HeyHeyJK

After you watch Hellraiser 2, you could watch "The Philosophy of Hellraiser" by Morbid Zoo on youtube. She discusses the themes underpinning the movies. I've watched that video many times and the part you might enjoy even more than that is her cat starts biting her relentlessly which is pretty hilarious given the topic at hand.

parker469a

Garak, yeah, I was wondering if she'd ever notice that voice.

parker469a

I hope you continue on with these. Two is basically equal in quality to the first movie. And I personally do like 3, even though it is kind of disconnected from the other two. ... I can't really vouch for the endless parade of sequels after #3 though.

WastedPo

This is one of my favorite horror movies, I love the atmosphere and the musical scores.

Critical87

OMG. I get curious about horror lore and start reading about all the other films to see how they fit. Just discovered Henry Cavill stars in Hellraiser: Hellworld in 2005. I guess we're watching them all the way to this one then

UnSafeStu

I like how the first four work together. Haven’t seen the newest Hulu adaptation but I did hear it is very divisive. HR3 has J Dax!

SpankTheMonk

A bit of a spoiler for the sequel?

SpankTheMonk

Crickets are a tasty nutritional snack! I really like Hellraiser 4 because of how it boxes the first four movies- πŸ˜‰. But I know it isn’t a award winner but the story is cool, and for me it is a cool encapsulation of the first 4 films - πŸ˜‰

SpankTheMonk

Quills is so much better than this movie.

REDR58

At least watch Hellraiser 2. Everything after that is only for the most die hard fans.

Aaron Stinson

Huh, apparently I'm in the minority for thinking #2 was a step downward.

JoeNotCharles

Simone did not recognize the prominent Star Trek actor.

Andrew

Forth one had a great story.

nossieboy

Hellraiser 2 is a must. 1 and 2 could be one long movie. The rest really suck 3 is so so.. The new one isn't to bad trhough. With female Pinhead.

Jeremy Cheely

I watched this film when I was far too young and I felt physically ill for hours afterwards.

Daniel Smith

Hellraiser 2 is even better imo. And incase you have been told yet. Clive Barker is the author who wrote the story (The Forbidden) that Candyman is based on.

Wormtongue

This movie made me almost vomit several times...

Actuarial Lurker

Hellraiser II is definitely worth a watch if you liked this, and I really like the 2022 reboot. The only other sequel I've seen is 3, which is entertaining in its own way, but a step down for sure.

Pam Nail

I think the 2022 movie (requel?) is pretty great as well.

Pam Nail

The idea of The Cenobites being the villains of the franchise is honestly what killed it in the long run. Subsequent filmmakers turned them into more traditional "monsters" and inherently "evil", and completely forgot that HUMANS are the villains, and The Cenobites are merely a means to an end.

Chase Lonnergan

Yeah Hellraiser II was really the one that made Pinhead a horror icon. Its a little bit like how the first Mad Max was toying with its universe, but it wasn't fully in focus, nor was there the budget for it. But the second one snapped fully into focus and created the iconic look/feel that spawned a million Grade Z ripoffs. The first Hellraiser introduces the elements, but its the second one that ties them together into a coherent franchise and iconic villain.

A cenobite in religious terms is a type of ascetic who practices self isolation and self mortification, historical cenobites were a common type of Catholic monk during the dark ages up to the renaissance. The cenobites of Hellraiser take their name from the historical ones because they too practice self mortification and torture but treat it like a sacred or religious act.

Emptysea93

I've gotta recommend following this up with Hellbound: Hellraiser II. It continues the story of Kirsty Cotton from the first movie, who is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. However, the head doctor starts playing with the Lament Configuration and unleashes the Cenobites again. It's really cool because it explores the lore of the Cenobites and how they came to exist. I think it's one of the all time great horror sequels and definitely worth a watch.

Jeb Manning

I also remember a funny story about the title of the movie. The book the movie is based on is called The Hellbound Heart, but executives thought it sounded too much like the title of a romance novel. Before they settled on Hellraiser, an old woman working on the set suggested calling the movie "What a Woman Will Do for a Good Fuck."

Jeb Manning

Hellraiser is a great, classic horror movie. It's one of the best horror movies of the 1980's. So much about it is great. The effects, the music, and especially the story. Hellraiser is probably one of the most original ideas for a horror story ever conceived. I like that in the first couple of Hellraiser movies, the Cenobites aren't necessarily the villains. At least not the main villains anyway. They're just beings who keep exploring deeper and deeper into sensations of hedonistic pleasure but are no longer able to distinguish between pain or pleasure. I also love the implication that the only people who would seek the puzzle box out are people who can't get any pleasure or satisfaction out of life. Like Frank, who is a psychopathic, hedonistic scumbag who uses people but still doesn't feel satisfied. Hellraiser is such a wild ride. Great reaction as usual.πŸ™‚

Jeb Manning

I would say 2 is definitely worth watching as it's a continuation. Beyond that point it almost gets worse by each release and beyond 4 there's not much value in my opinion

Jimmy Olofsson

My favorite sleep talking story i have is when my partner let out a long dramatic sigh and said "mmmm tits" and i have never heard him sound so happy πŸ˜‚...I also wanted to recommend the movie Quills, its about the Marquis de Sade. Idk if its exactly channel material but thought George might be interested.

PunchNJewelee

For George's knowledge, a Clive Barker's Hellraiser video game was recently announced.

Gollum the Ottoman

Coincidences happen every day

Stuart Sutcliffe

For all you anime fans out there, the Cenobites were the direct inspiration for the God Hand from Berserk--and the LeMarchand Configuration was the inspiration for the Millennium Puzzle in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Stuart Sutcliffe

take note of the actor who plays the dad. You will see him in star trek...eventually :)

Onikaze

been a long time since I have saw that movie, damn those practical effects are great especially for a low budget movie, 1 milion was the budget of it a tenth of The Things budget. sure they only had one house as a set (more or less) but its sooo well made

overdev

Shout out to the Marquis de Sade & George Bataille, they’d have welcomed the Cenobites with open arms.

The sequels get exponentially lower quality.

Clive Barker is a horror novel writer, he created the candyman which you did previously, the reason he directed this film is right before this he wrote a movie Rawhead Rex and they completely butchered the story and remove all the subtext from the film, so this time he was going to do it himself

Matt88g

Yay, Garak.

Roger Davies

About the sprays: Mostly you do it when the place is under maintenance and someone else has allready enabled access by setting up scaffolding or something. You do it when they are nearly done, aim for the last night, so they dont have the time to remove it because they have to take the scaffolding done. And sometimes people just climb because they are willing to take risks that you would consider unreasonable. You find complicated grafitty in long tunnels where there is hardly any room to avoid the trains, so people risk theire lifes creating them

Dioskur

So many things about Hellraiser, but I think the thing about this franchise is that they launched the "... In Space" trope. If you are wanting to watch more, I would definitely stop at "in Space"(4th one), but the last one that was made for Hulu is really good. There are like 7 or 8 direct to video sequels that range from just terrible, to "I bet this was a good script that they put a Hellraiser skin on to get it made."
