I feel the need to mention, as the husband of a Black woman, in response to a lot of the comments on this thread: asking to touch a Black woman’s hair is objectifying and othering/exoticizing. In a close enough relationship/friendship, it’s ok to ask. Using the word “pet” would be even worse, and even in the context of Millefeuille’s relationship to Brun, I don’t think it’s acceptable.

Because in most contexts walking going up to a woman and telling them that you find them very attractive and are harboring feelings will at best make a friendship awkward and at worst get you in trouble for sexual harassment. Most of the time people will err on the side of safety and be content with whatever friendship they have rather than risk rocking the boat and losing it, and until they have confirmation (or strong evidence that it won't be poorly received) they will keep it to themselves. but maybe that's just my skewed view
