Geography of Hebridean Hame
Added 2025-11-07 23:48:01 +0000 UTCI was doing a little writing tonight and had to turn to Google Maps - which made me think that while at least one person has successfully guessed the location I've based the story on, there's (probably) no harm in sharing it here.
Note - this isn't a place I've been! The idea for the setting originated from my watching a YouTube channel about life on the island, while simultaneously reading all the QT material I could get my hands on. I was keen to write a QT story set in Scotland, and the island presented the option to write something different from some of the other stories out there, and certainly different from the other UK stories. I am Scottish, but my familiarity with the Highlands comes from a few holidays and day trips.
My story is therefore based on a fictionalised version of a real place, but overlayed with my cultural knowledge.
For those geographically impaired, here's Scotland (with a little bit of Ireland, Northern Ireland and England):

The island and road to Fort William:

And a more precise map showing the roads as well as the Island:

Below is a slightly zoomed-in map of the western side of the island, showing the route of the ford and track. Note, the house is a bit further south than the end of the road shown, and for my purposes, there is a rough track connecting the east and west parts.

An image from the internet showing the ford at low tide. Again, my version has this as a concrete surface.

And for those who might really be interested, here are the floor plans I'm working off for the Lodge:

And the house:

Hopefully, this was interesting!

I appreciate the level of detail you’ve given to bring everything to life. Now that I know the floor plans of the house itself, could you please tell everyone which room all the valuables are kept in and the combinations to any safes that they might be kept in? I have bills due soon….😂

2025-11-08 11:32:27 +0000 UTCI actually went and searched the potential route since you mentioned that railroad bridge from the Harry Potter / Hogwarts movies, and kind of had an idea of the general location, based off of that.
