2024-08-29 05:34:19 +0000 UTCHey gang, Re: the discussion about console exclusives last week I wanted to get the panels take on a thought I was having while that conversation was happening. Obviously agree with all the points raised (and im console agnostic - have them all) but one benefit to exclusives (and in turn disparate consoles existing) is that competition between Playstation and Xbox benefits the consumer. If Xbox becomes a third party publisher with a gamepass app that would leave Playstation a monopoly on the console market (ignoring those weirdos over at Nintendo) which in the short term may not be an issue but down the line would disadvantage the consumer. Cheers!

2024-08-28 22:56:05 +0000 UTCStarwars outlaws is my first major video game releases where I cant go check game informer to see if it is good. So that sucks. However, have you ever heard of Patch Magazine. It is amazing little production if you want physical media about video games. Give them support.

2024-08-28 15:17:50 +0000 UTCHello Minnmax :) Is there a habit or something you used to do when you were younger and don't do or care anymore? For example for me I used to almost always play games on hard or collect collectables in games nowadays I'll attempt a game on hard but if I think it's just stupidly hard I'll just put it on easy and just move on. Also with Yakuza like a dragon I just put the game on easy at one point because the game is flashy and everything but I was just in it more for the story and I know the game is so long.

2024-08-28 13:54:30 +0000 UTCIn defense of exclusives: Your guest last week, Kate Sánchez, said she hates exclusives and it's better for consumers if everything is available everywhere. While I can understand and respect that sentiment, I have to say, as a life-long fan of games consoles I really find myself disagreeing with her position. As a kid, I was thrilled when my dad got me a SNES cause it had Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country, but I was always jealous of my friends who had a Megadrive (or Genesis for you Americans) cause it had Sonic and Streets of Rage. I was super stoked to have a PS1 cause it had Final Fantasy, Tekken and Metal Gear Solid, but I also loved it whenever I got a chance to play an N64 cause it had Goldeneye, Mario Kart and Smash Bros... I could go on, but I think you get the picture. For me, exclusive games have always been the primary factor that defines a console and makes it a desirable purchase, so if a console doesn't have any strong exclusives then I really can't see a reason to buy it, and if you have a console that there's no reason to buy then it's obviously not going to perform very well, which means it's not going to be sustainable and in the long run we run the risk of that platform going away. I think it's a valid concern that with first-party Xbox games going to PS5 just a few months after launch, there's very little reason to own an Xbox console, and if Xbox consoles go away that would effectively give Sony a monopoly over the Triple A console gaming space, and as we all know, when one company has a monopoly that makes it easier for them to enact anti-consumer practices and gives them less incentive to do things that benefit the consumer.

2024-08-28 07:18:50 +0000 UTCI had a nice nostalgia trip rewatching the RapidFire videos from back in the day. I ended up rewatching NMS's a couple of times since, beyond the questions that are jokes and such, it checks all the boxes "today" (of course back on release it was nowhere near) Questions like "can you customize your character?" or "can I live in space" are all stuff you can do. Even the different gravity or base building is in there. It does even make Bioshock Infinite less infinite! I think this video aged like wine <3

2024-08-28 03:37:59 +0000 UTCHey team, as a new dad I'm finding that time for gaming is in short supply. For some reason I thought replaying a game would be the best way to ease back into gaming, but I'm quickly realizing that playing Fallout New Vegas for an hour each day may have been the wrong choice. 2024-08-28 01:26:59 +0000 UTCDearest Maxxers, In listening to a lot of the outlet reviews of star wars outlaws, I noticed that a lot of the reviews discussed that the world is incredibly well crafted but the mechanics were not unique. We don't play the same kinds of indies but because of all the harpin about indies yall do, I've somewhat converted to an indie fan, I may not have given them a look if not for the influence. 2024-08-27 21:17:13 +0000 UTCSeems like Concord is having a slow start and I hear a lot of discourse on whether it should have been free to play game to get more players into the ecosystem. I know a lot of these games rely on friend groups playing together, but it’s hard to get all your friends to commit on buying a new game. Do you think we’ll see a new model moving forward, where players can buy the game and get a a free pass for one or a few friends (maybe for a month) to make it easier for people to buy the game and have friends to play with and making it easier for people to try it and get into the game before purchasing?

2024-08-27 20:49:16 +0000 UTCHi all, What is the future for new IP for FPS shooters? Thinking about Concord, and how I won’t buy it because it costs $40. Afraid to buy a game that people already think is dead on arrival. Plus I’m sure it’s built like a live service game that wants me to invest more money into it. Bought season one pass to, The Finals, earlier in the year, and never did a season 2 pass, because I didn’t want to spend more money on something I thought might die later in the year. Despite loving the game. It seems like a difficult landscape for new developers to make new IP. Work on something for multiple years, and it seemingly has be reliant on season pass/skins to survive. Do you think there’s a better future for new FPS shooters?

2024-08-27 18:32:35 +0000 UTCHey MinnMaxers, This is less of a question and more of a tirade, but here we go: I wrote in previously when Peter Molyneux was about to release his NFT game, "Legacy", asking if you thought it was a cynical cash-grab or if it could possibly have legs. It was a flop. And now I see him appearing at Gamescom, on-stage with Keighley no-less, announcing his new game after as he puts it "messing around on mobile — what the hell was I thinking?". Yes, I wonder what he was thinking when he made millions selling virtual land pre-release, knowing he'll promptly abandon it at the first chance... It's a good thing Keighley wrote in his script: "to your credit, you've self-funded this project", attempting to prop up what's left of Molyneux's tattered credibility. So now we can all let our guard down, but anyone who actually looked at Legacy's gameplay (there were several TENS of us) will see that the town-building, resource management, visual style, menus, and 'make your own food/products' gameplay — the entire core of the game — is ripped straight from his last cash-grab shovelware. Don't worry though, there's a hand cursor reminiscent of Black and White, he said "Dungeon Keeper" repeatedly, and he invoked the name "Albion", so we can just smear a coat of British whimsy on it and call it a day. The fact that such a uninspired and poor showing of a game made it onto a stage guest spot is mind-boggling. Uh, I guess my question is: Why do we keep falling for his scams? Is being reminded of his last competent game from 20 years ago enough? Can we stop letting this happen?! Cheers, Tom PS — I generally try to see the best in people but something about Peter Molyneux's incessant scams really grinds my gears!

2024-08-27 17:40:10 +0000 UTCWho is your favorite solo indie publisher? For me, it's Terry Cavanagh for his ability to leverage simple mechanics in extensive, clever and surprising ways. (Honorable mention to Tom Francis, though it seems like he has a staff now.)

2024-08-27 17:37:27 +0000 UTCHey everyone. After seeing Alien Romulus and The Crow remake in the same week I was wondering, what’s the best movie you’ve watched this year and what is the worst?

2024-08-27 17:36:54 +0000 UTCAlright, Ben, and please have the others chime in, having recently enjoyed the exceptional Disneyland attraction Rise of the Resistance, would you recommend to a Star Wars fan all of the money and time it would take to enjoy it, or just play some Star Wars Outlaws? This can be opened as a more General discussion, but let's say it was a weird situation where you could make the reservations, you had vacation time slated, but that was the ONLY reason you wanted to go to Disneyland, but you would have to fly out, get a hotel, go to the park, stand in line (maybe buy a fast pass) sleep, and then fly back. OR pick up Star Wars Rebels and spend the same amount of time playing it. Imagining you are a person where the Disney trip had been budgeted for. I realize they are wildly different experiences, but I guess it's a bigger discussion of the price of big singular "Wow!" experiences vs. Longer term trickled out of time fun.

2024-08-27 17:32:40 +0000 UTCI'm excited for the new Batman VR game, but with previous AAA VR releases like Assassin's Creed Nexus, Asgard's Wrath 2, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and Half Life Alyx not drastically growing the VR userbase, will Arkham VR have any impact at all or is this simply going to be another cool game that only the handful of dedicated VR owners checkout?

2024-08-27 17:31:29 +0000 UTC$130 for the deluxe edition of Star Wars Outlaws! Are there any games you've played when it was worth it to purchase a deluxe or special edition?

2024-08-27 17:31:28 +0000 UTCThe Little Nightmares games tapped into some especially primal fears and I think they captured beautifully the diabolical whimsy and dark imagination of childhood anxieties. One of my little nightmares from childhood was looking out the double-paned windows of my house at night (when the other side was dark), only to catch eyes with the distorted terror-realm version of myself staring back from the void... 💀 Made my stomach turn! What little nightmares (rational or otherwise) fueled your fears as a kid?

2024-08-27 17:30:15 +0000 UTCHey Minnmaxers, A few months back you chatted about DVD special features which got me reminiscing. Are there any movies you remember having standout special features discs? I remember when the first Harry Potter movie came out (controversy noted), I discovered a secret menu selection which didn't have any text and wasn't signposted in any way. It led to a series of mini-games and puzzles based on the challenges from the end of the movie. If you completed them all, you were rewarded with the deleted scenes. In what, for me, was the pre-internet era, this was such a cool Easter egg to have found. Do any of you have fond memories of this bygone era of DVD extras?

2024-08-27 17:29:22 +0000 UTCThis month a great remaster of Telltale's third season of Sam and Max — a series and Telltale best — released under the radar. I have been playing that and the remaster of Baten Kaitos, another forgotten remaster from last year. What is the last cult remaster you played that deserves a bit more attention?

2024-08-27 17:22:26 +0000 UTCHello Computer Loving Cohorts! Am I crazy? Why is no one talking about Civilization 7?? As a lifelong fan, I am super excited for the new release in February and the changes they showed off at Gamescom! Is anyone on the team a CIV player? Also Ben did a great interview of Sid Meier that is worth a watch. Thanks!

2024-08-27 17:19:59 +0000 UTCAfter watching some gameplay of Concord I decided to buy it and give it a try. I think the gameplay is really solid, you can really feel that people who worked at Bungie made this game. Unfortunately, the game seems DoA. I feel like this is partially due to marketing (leaning into story and characters when the real star is the gameplay). Have you ever really enjoyed a game like this that felt dead arrival?

2024-08-27 17:12:34 +0000 UTCBen, at the start of Minnmax you'd mention fairly frequently how few women listened to the show or engaged with your content. Has your female audience grown in the last few years and why or why not? Also what will you do next to add more diversity to your audience?

2024-08-27 17:10:50 +0000 UTCSomeone on Twitter theorized that part of the reason why Sony games trend higher on the review scores is because of the long lead times they give to reviewers. Why do some companies not give reviewers enough time?

2024-08-27 17:09:37 +0000 UTCHey wonderful people, who are the best and worst videogame role models? and did you expect them to be as good or bad at the start of their games? Haseo from .hack//G.U. comes to mind for me- he's just an edgy teen playing an MMO, but he grows so much in such a natural way that I can't help but think he helped inspire people other than me to be better versions of themselves.

I loved my time with all three games. My question is, is this what Leo Vader feels like? Secondly, has any of the group had ang patented “Leo Vader” moments with a game that you really like but no one seems to care about. Thanks!

2024-08-27 17:06:16 +0000 UTCWith all the long-form story telling in the world today from Marvel and Star Wars movies, to long running tv series like Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead, to beloved book series like Harry Potter or John Grisham legal/thriller novels—are video games the true “longest form” of story telling available? Looking at the Trails series or Like a Dragon series, you could argue that there could be well over a thousand hours involved in everything put together vs a tv series where it’s maybe 70 hours for 7 seasons. As gamers, do we hold that throne? What are your thoughts
