Vote For The Retro Game We Tackle Next For The Deepest Dive!

After a long stretch of covering new games with The Deepest Dive, we heard the community's outcry to go back and tackle something from the past with a multi-part game club discussion. To help support some of the Game Informer editors who lost their job when the magazine shut down, we let four of them choose the retro game they'd want to cover the most with The Deepest Dive. MinnMax folks will be on every option in the poll as well, although the final crew is always subject to change depending on schedules. You have until Monday to lock in your choice for which game we cover next in a two-part discussion for The Deepest Dive! Feel free to politely make your case in the comments for one game over another. Thanks for supporting independent games media and letting us extend some support for the former Game Informer folks!

Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012) - As one of Charles Harte's favorite games, we'd jump into this unique-controlling 3DS gem from the creator of Smash Bros. The 3DS eShop is down, so you'd have to get a physical version to play along. The crew would presumably consist of Charles Harte, Kyle Hilliard, Ben Hanson, Kelsey Lewin, and potentially a special guest. (11.5 Hours - How Long To Beat)

Mirror's Edge (2008) - Alex Van Aken wants to go back and unpack DICE's parkour-centric first-person cult classic. The game is available on Steam and it looks like you can also still buy it on Xbox, or you can stream it on PlayStation via its classics collection. The crew would presumably consist of Alex Van Aken, Charles Harte, Jacob Geller, and Leo Vader. (6 Hours - How Long To Beat)

Mega Man X (1993) - Kyle Hilliard wants to play one of his favorite games of all time to celebrate the blue bomber's appearance in Funko Fusion presumably? This challenging and tight-controlling platformer would be the first 2D action game we've covered for The Deepest Dive. The Mega Man X Legacy collection is available for all modern consoles. The crew would presumably consist of Kyle Hilliard, Ben Hanson, Ross "The Star Wars Guy" Pfund, Bryan Vore, and possibly a special guest. (3.5 Hours - How Long To Beat)

God of War (2005) - As a big fan of character action games, Marcus Stewart thought it'd be interesting to go back and play the original God of War for the PS2. For a modern console option, you can stream the game on PS5. The crew would presumably consist of Marcus Stewart, Kelsey Lewin, Jacob Geller, Kyle Hilliard, and Charles Harte. (9 Hours - How Long To Beat)

Choose wisely, the poll ends on Sunday night. The Deepest Dive for the winning option will begin soon, we'll share exact dates for the two-part discussion after the poll ends. As always, any help spreading the word about MinnMax and The Deepest Dive is appreciated!

Comments

When is the first episode?

Troy Hardester

DO ALL FOUR!! DO ALL FOUR!! (Respectfully)

Jethrin

Jacob joked about the competitive nature of this poll, and I have to admit I actually do feel a bit bad pitting GI alumni against each other for a small project and some amount of financial reward! I want them all to get a leg up and it feels bad to choose!

Patrick Polk

Mirror's Edge would be quite a short Deepest Dive... Give me a reason to finally play Kid Icarus Uprising, MinnMax!

Braulio Martinez

I was hoping it would win too. I never played it but would love an excuse to and I think it would be the most interesting to talk about.

Justin Ray

Mega Man Twitter 😂

Big Jon

Picking Mirror’s Edge because it’s the only game I own in this list and it’s been sitting in my library unplayed for many years. It’ll be fun to play along with everyone for the deepest dive :D

wawa

I would enjoy watching all of these at some point if possible.

JELDER

All these choices are fantastic but more people need to know how great Kid Icarus Uprising is!

David Tibble

Sure thing!

Ben Hanson

Mega Man X is a great opportunity to talk level design and mechanics, and having finished all of these games before, MMX is the best (and most fun to play) by a mile. Fair warning though: if it's your first time, you are not finishing this game in 3.5 hours.

Spencer

Love both 2 and 4 as options, Any reason thou to shine a spotlight on OG GoW trilogy, to show Sony that the people want a remaster (or at least a port) - as a way to play these games on PC! C’mon Next project for PlayStation Publishing!! 📣

Thorn23

Mega Man X!!! It’s one of the greatest games of all time! The soundtrack alone deserves it!

Ryan Mcginnis

This poll is set as "choose all that apply". Are we allowed to vote for more than one?

CoupdeGravy

It’s a lot of fun but not $70 worth of fun if you know what I mean

Patrick Hynes

It’s a shame kid Icarus likely won’t get it, I loved that game growing up!!!

Patrick Hynes

I'm really stoked that Mirror's Edge is leading. May I recommend that, if it is possible, we include the Pure Time Trial DLC as part of the dive? It was ground breaking for me, as it was the first DLC that I remember being excited about when the term "DLC" was still a bit of a dirty word amongst gamers. I would also recommend a thread in the dive channel for people to post their times on different levels.

Vilis

Yeah but is game worth it? Hate they closed the store online

Troy Hardester

Don't worry kid has no chance of winning

Gavin C

LETS GOOOO MIRROR’S EDGE

Kert419

Don’t really wanna spend 70 on kid but should I? I have 2ds

Troy Hardester

Always down for Mirrors Edge talk. Or a excuse to play it. I don't think any other parkour themed game has nailed it as well as this, and that includes the sequel. Psyched to see it leading the pack, but there's no bad choice here.

RedMption

I am rooting for Mirror's Edge or Kid Icarus. Happy to see a retro deepest dive. Perhaps GTA: Chinatown Wars for a DD in the future?

Michael Berry

look... I know it's in last place.... But Kid Icarus Uprising is COOL

Anton Pinkerton

Kid Icarus Uprising is my all time favorite game. There’s so many cool little details within the levels to talk about alongside all the fun ideas it brings to the table.

Kyle Silva

I cast my vote, but honestly I don’t care which one wins! Great choices all around.

Lanthian

NOOOOOO, KID ICARUS IS IN LAST PLACE

Grant Kelly Walker

Mega man X’s ending is enough that I’d love a deep dive on

Tonytheswordsman

Wow, lots of votes on this one! Great to see it!! Looking forward to content from any of these folks

alexok37

Gotta try and remember where all the hidden capsules are on Mega Man X now…

Cardiac

Even if Mega Man X doesn't win, I'm loving all these positive comments. It's an SNES all-timer!

Ross Pfund

I hope we get a Kid Icarus Remake so it gets its proper time in the spotlight and for all my fellow lefties.

Luca Alberti

having a large group go over what made the original god of war so awesome, after the newer god of wars changed everyones mind about what god of war is, would be really neat to listen to.

ryan

My profile picture is an icon that a friend drew for me based on the Mirror's Edge logo because of how much I love that game. So there's only one option for me

Ampex

I would love the excuse to dust of the 3DS for Kid Icarus, but if other people aren't so interested in that - fingers crossed Nintendo eventually does a port and we can revisit this DD option. Mirror's Edge I'm also happy with as I already own that - I weirdly had a performance problem with it on Steam Deck but I think it just needed one setting changed to fix.

Lamb Dance

Regardless of which game is ultimately chosen, even a single video to highlight the absurdity of the Kid Icarus controls would be cool.

Frank Forte

Oh, man. Mega Man X, that is - I just played through it again the other day. I'm with Kyle! One of the all-time greats!

Gabriel Cleveland

Kid Icarus is the one I need to play here but of course it has no chance

Tanner Hoisington

Wow really mirrors edge?!?! Nooooo

Gooseberry

Never played a Mega Man. Now's the perfect time!

KickinIt

As an homage to Game Informer you should make a Deepest Dive “cover” for each one. Would be an awesome way to visual each one and cement their place in history. The covers can feature the guests and inside jokes relating to the discussion.

Dru Marcus

Seeing a game from 2012 listed as retro gave me an existential crisis.

Kevin Kennedy

Extremely close between Mirror’s Edge and original God of War for me. Loved Mirror’s Edge, but I’m curious to look back at God of War and see the difference.

Boondock-Bandit

Opening chests in god of war of is so bad, you have to mash R2 and that does not go well with analog triggers on modern controllers

neuroflare

Wait, what happened to all that talk about Earthbound? Did I miss an announcement?

Herb Alamo

I bought Kid Icarus Uprising back in the day but barely played it, so would love an excuse to return to it again! 😁

Kaizoku Risu

Just want to say I am so happy to see an older game get tackled for the deepest dive.

Justin Ray

MegaMan Battle Network

Richard Hayes

I just want more Kid Icarus, but would be more than happy about Megaman X

Jon Martin

Jacob may have been right about Mirror's Edge. It's right in that sweet spot of time and I think enough people are curious enough about how it holds up. But God of War would also be good.

Michael Lane

X1 a goat game, if it doesn’t win people should still play it!

Patrick G

I feel seen! Haha

BEEFCAKE

These are all great options!

JHerb

c'mon retroooooooooooooo

skatestreets.game

Missing the boat with all the Legacy of Kain momentum ;)

Red O Magnus

mega man X was such a huge leap in quality for the series and showed off the SNES too, talk it!

Bloody Waffle

They're all such good picks! Could the 2nd place game have a Max Spoilers?

DarkFishDays

If Mirror’s Edge wins, I would recommend reaching out to Mike Minotti. He loves that game

Mackenzie Adams

Hear this person out!

Ben Hanson

I just took 10 points of psychic damage seeing Mirros Edge referred to as retro

Steve B

Cmon Megaman!

Stephen Rigney

Mega Man X would be such a fun Deepest Dive. It'll also just be an easy one to play along with.

Jordan Brown

As long as we get more Charles, it's a win for everyone :)

Stevo

Never played the OG Mirror’s Edge. This would be a good reason to try it out!

Zach

I loved Kid Icarus, but an excuse to play God of War again would be fun. I like Mirror’s Edge as a speedrun, it’s sort of spoiled the “regular” version of the game for me.

AdhorrableDesigns

My write in vote: Tomba!

BEEFCAKE

I've not heard enough people talk about Mirror's Edge in detail and not just mention the concept in passing, so it would be pretty special to get a deepest dive on it!

HaulingGas

I’m hoping Mirror’s Edge wins! I’ve got… Faith! 😁

The Sleepy MailMan

I've had Mega Man X on my list for awhile, give me a good reason to plug in the Mini Snes too!

Mootkinstein

I want all of them! However, I'd really like to see the original God of War, since I've only played the most recent two games.

Knobby Buckles (Dave)

was playing mirrors edge yesterday it's a really special game

Medicine Seller

I could really use a good excuse to play Kid Icarus.

Tommy Ostrenga

Mirror's Edge is one of my all time fav games! I still exercise to it's soundtrack!

Keegan Mobley

Anything but god of war

Logan Young

Been too long since I played God of War, let's go!

Parmetheus

Team Kid Icarus all the way!

Michael Christoffel

Mega Man X is one of my favorite games of all time.
