Join Us For The Deepest Dive On Pokémon Legends: Arceus!

We're celebrating GameFreak's new approach to Pokémon by kicking off a gigantic community game club discussion called The Deepest Dive! Join Ben Hanson, Sarah Podzorski, Janet Garcia, and the co-director of the Video Game History Foundation Kelsey Lewin for the best, thorough discussion of the game on the internet. We're going beyond any review or podcast discussion because we're collecting your comments on the game here on Patreon. You can always unlock the podcast version of the discussion at the $5 tier as well.

For the first discussion, we're talking about everything in the game until you beat the big boss from the first area. They really build it up in the story, it's the thing that's causing trouble. There are a lot of sidequests to do, so this section can last anywhere from 90 minutes to 10 hours. We'll be collecting your comments in a post on Monday, January 31st here on Patreon.

This is my first foray into the Pokemon IP and the first thing that struck me was that the game begins with a god giving you a holy hero's quest. Is this how other Pokemon games are framed? How does this fit in with the overall Pokemon lore? Thanks y'all p.s. enjoying my first Pokemon experience but also this game is a bit disappointing visually

So, uh, is anyone else really confused by the new lore that Pokemon shrink themselves? Laventon tells you that Pokemon have the power to shrink themselves and that's why we can capture them in Poke Balls. I always thought the Poke Balls were what shrank Pokemon down, but I guess all Pokemon have the ability to shrink themselves to microscopic size. Maybe this is Pokemon's explanation for why Pokemon can battle in a fixed space when Pokemon like Wailord are supposed to be massive and others are supposed to be tiny?

Update: finally out of the tutorial today and I am enjoying the throwback to an earlier time where things are first being created. This being my second Pokémon game like Shazirah, I kinda like being given a sense of the beginnings. I’m enjoying the notebook. I loved Where’s Waldo as a kid and the notebook is giving me all the nostalgia those books had with their boxes to check off every extra item in the scene, after finding the main characters. The purple is a problem but thankfully it seems to be less noticeable in certain areas and/or times of day. Playing on TV btw. Lots of other frame rate issues as well but that’s the switch. Maybe a bit worse in this game then others? I’m enjoying the collection and battle system enough to to look past it so far. Does anyone else think this might be evidence that a switch pro was intended to be out now? I can’t recall any Nintendo property looking this unpolished. Thanks for the deepest dives!

My second as well! Would give other games a shot when a friend had them but never attracted me. My son had Shield and it clicked with me. Came here to see if anyone else had any early comments. I knew to expect a slow burn to the start and that has been true so far. I’m so sorry I ever complained about the minor graphics issues I experienced with Halo Infinite, that never detracted from my enjoyment. The purple. The purple is everywhere.

wait only your second?? :OOOOOO

This and the stellar reviews have convinced me off the fence into playing this. My second Pokemon game. That panel is fantastic!
