Dr. Who 15x4 - Lucky Day

Statement

Because this week’s real-world events resemble some of the themes discussed in my video today, I want to make something absolutely clear:

Violence is never a solution! Not in this situation, not in any situation! Nothing I say in the video should be taken as endorsing, suggesting, or excusing violence of any kind. Violence must never be used as a means to address problems. Never!

Please also remember to distinguish between my comments on the series/episode I watched and real-life events and real life people.

I know you guys would never think anything else, but given the online debates at the moment, I want to make my statement very clear. Thank you for listening.

Dr. Who 15x4 - Lucky Day

Comments

"Hello, everyone. My name is Ruby Sunday.", Ruby, "Lucky Day" It was great to see Ruby back. Obviously it is another Doctor-lite story - but it's UNIT-heavy which almost makes up for it. "The grown-ups are talking!", Conrad, "Lucky Day" It is a nice episode because it takes you on the complete journey of the betrayal of Ruby. And everyone ends up hating Conrad! A bit like "Dot and Bubble", I suppose. "Man, that was lucky.", "No, disgusting is what it was.", The Doctor and Ruby, "Lucky Day" The fact that we see shop mannequins at the beginning is not a coincidence - the production team set it up so long-term viewers would be reminded of "Rose" and playing with audience expectations about what the monster is going to be. "Just checking you're still with us.", Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, "Lucky Day" I'm not sure about the containment cells that Kate visits. It feels a bit too much like the "Torchwood" vaults. Actually, this WHOLE story feels like it could have been a first-season "Torchwood" episode with Captain Jack being ruthlessly indifferent to the attack of the monster against Conrad. "Oh, they can't stop lying! There are no Shreek. No Cybermen, no Sycorax, no Yetis in the Underground.", Conrad, "Lucky Day" In New Who we know of Sycorax and Cybermen and, now, Shreek and, of course, so does UNIT. "Yetis in the Underground" is a reference to a Classic Who story - actually, a very important Classic Who story - and one that has a missing episode (for mysterious reasons). "You should be very careful what you say about my father.", Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, "Lucky Day" Yeah, you tell hin, Kate! We love the Brig. Kate has a photo of the Brig on her desk. We love the Brig. "Follows dozens of radical blogs. Subscription to Albion TV, revisionist podcasts ... It's an echo chamber of disinformation.", Kate Stewart, Lucky Day" "Albion TV" would be a channel for the "Albion Party" which was that extreme political party for Roger ap Gwilliam we saw in "73 Yards". "Oh, I'm the Governor. And it's your lucky day.", Mrs Flood, "Lucky Day"

The reason that the monster was taking it's time was explained earlier in the episode by Ruby that it likes the hunt so it's toying with Conrad. Its a very strong episode, I give it a 4/5. For a Ruby centred Doctor lite adventure I prefer last series 73 Yards more. It's also a bit disappointing to have a Doctor lite episode when there is only 8 episodes a series. That said I do like his scene in this episode and Conrad spoiling him on Belinda which explains why he was trying to find her in The Robto Revolution story.

7.3 is too low, imo. The only detrimental element for me was the lack of the Doctor. It's disappointing that a mere 8 episode season should require a Doctor-lite story; which isn't to say that it invalidates it! Another solid and memorable story. Thank you for the update at the start. I will continue to hang around, as you have tempted me with 1) the occasional Classic story reaction, and 2) the occasional UK-centric video reaction. These are reasons enough to keep me here. :)
