Dr. Who Reaction 11x4

Comments

Ah! Interesting. Thank you.

Andrew Gwilliam

I haven't planned to watch them, but thank you for the heads up 😊 That's so kind of you 😊

Nicologik

Final story of season 10. (69 - 5, according to wiki)

Ian Smith

Which serial code, Ian? I'm stumped! :-(

Andrew Gwilliam

I don't know if you watch the Paddington films but I should give you a trigger warning that the new one has a scene with a rather large spider. Not like these ones, of course and it is played for laughs.

Stephen Males

Although there IS a Classic Who spider story (they even talk!),the one I'm referring to features giant wriggly creatures. Gave me nightmares as a kid - and a lifelong phobia.

Ian Smith

The effects were really well made. I was begging for the CGI to go back to Series 1 CGI, but unfortunately they didn“t listen :D It“s fascinating how far they“ve come, production wise. The developement of this TV is so unique, experiencing the show from 1963 until today, and seeing it grow with every series. :) I thought the same about Jack shooting the spider and how it helped the pooor animal out of his misery. But maybe, if we had a few more minutes, the doctor could have come up with a solution, to save it. That“s what I“d like to think about that scene at least, cause it makes it work better for me. I agree with you about the ending beeing a little unexplained and rushed. I didn“t notice that though, while I was watching the episode. Yes my shoulder was better the next day, but I really pinched a nerve, the pain was overwhelming, like a thunder rushing trough my shoulders and head. Nothing I want to relife in the near future :D Well, the election results made me furious tbh, I can“t even begin to explain how they made me feel. I“m trying to find a way to deal with the pain, but all those people suffering in the next 4 years....It akes me feel so helpless and angry.

Nicologik

Yeah this is the perfect Halloween Episode :) And you are right I love the Fam and I love the actress who plays the doctor. I am looking forward to watching more. Which I“ll do today :D

Nicologik

Yeah we do watch it in German. The German dubbing is pretty good, but once you“ve watched any Show in the original language the dubbing always just sounds strange. Same with Buffy and Gilmore Girls for me for example. Can“t watch them in German it just feels weird. :D

Nicologik

I completely get why you don“t want to watch the episode. I looked away for 90% of the rewatch when I watched it with my boyfriend again. :D And yes, you remember that gap in the floor scene correctly.

Nicologik

We do let the spiders live in our house as well. Only the small ones though, and the rules are similar to yours. It“s alright if you stay in your place, but never ever cross my way :D The bigger ones are escorted to the outside garden by my boyfriend :) He“s not afraid of them, he even called the spiders in this episode "Cuuuute" when we watched it together :D :D Yeah the election results are hideous, I can“t even begin to explain what I feel. So many lifes riuned, by stupid people voting against their own well beeing, instead of doing their research before they go voting.

Nicologik

A two parter? Do you really hate me that much :D :D :D To be honest you got me really curious, talking about the Classic Spider Episode...hmmmm

Nicologik

After watching the episode I did question wether I only liked it because I was so scared of the Spiders. I came to the conclusion though that it was the whole concept of the episode that I liked. The setting in this hotel, the sound design, the characters they chose and the dialogues, the ending with the fam growing together. It was not only the spiders for me, but I do see your points. Haha a quote of me? That“s so funny :D You don“t have to feel sorry. This moment was perfect and fitted so well in this reaction. I liked it so much, that it inspired me when I created the Thumbnail :)

"You just ran really quickly out of a room looking really scared. Tell me exactly what's going on, omitting no detail, no matter how strange.", "A giant spider just smashed through my bathtub and took out my bodyguard, Kevin.", "Right. Very succinct summary. Well done.", The Doctor and Robertson, "Arachnids in the UK" This is a well art-directed episode with very detailed CGI "scary monsters" (I'll just refer to them from here on as the "scary monsters" to avoid phobia reactions). However, the plot really isn't very deep and actually the sort of simple story that you could imagine as a old black-and-white SF/horror movie plot - toxic waste causes small scary things to become giant scary monsters. Actually, as Ian mentioned, there is a famous Classic Who story with a slightly similar concept - not involving the same types of "scary monsters" though. Perhaps the simple plot is why this isn't rated very highly on IMDB. My problem with this one is that they put the type of the scary monster in the episode title. I realize the title is meant to be a deliberate reference to something, but it just seems to give the plot away for not a huge gain. "Tea at Yaz's. I've never been for tea at Yaz's.", The Doctor, "Arachnids in the UK" Nice to see Yaz's family - with the usual coincidence that we've landed close enough to the action that the Doctor immediately gets involved. Yaz's Dad collects junk as evidence of something and brings it into their appartment - that's odd - I know, it turns out there actually was a conspiracy, but it is still odd. "Am I being weird?", "A little bit, yeah.", "I'm trying to do small talk. I thought I was doing quite well.", The Doctor and Ryan, "Arachnids in the UK" This is a bit like the Doctor and Rose in "Tooth and Claw" when he was denigrating the telescope thing. I like it when the Doctor is a bit socially awkward. "He's running for President in 2020.", "Ed Sheeran?", "No! Him.", Graham and the Doctor, "Arachnids in the UK" They're not very subtle about the similarities between Robertson and another well-known person. "You know who you are.", Nicole, Reaction to "Arachnids in the UK" I suppose that would be me - and you're absolutely right. Most of the time I keep the image that IMDB uses, but I do curate the selection and this time the IMDB default was a boring screen grab which didn't really highlight what the episode was about. So I did select the image you saw - sorry about that. I'm happy our "fam" is continuing.

Andrew Vignaux

This story is a loose reworking of a Classic serial (something that Chibnall does a lot!), but with a different type of creepie-crawly. The Classic version is far better, imo, as its given plenty of time (6 episodes) to develop. This arachnid story,on the other hand, sets itself up well - has GREAT spiders - and is then wrapped up almost immediately. So,it's not really 'Arachnids in the UK'; more like 'Arachnids in a large hotel and a few houses in Sheffield'. How much better this could have been as a 2 parter! Other than that,I like it well enough - including the villain. 7.5 from me.

Ian Smith

I actually don’t mind spiders, we have an unwritten rule in my house, that if they stay out of my way I’ll let them be. After all they do us a big favour by eating bugs and flies that may be more harmful (health wise) that said a great big spider like the one in this episode would freak anyone out. You mention Australia, I went there about 20 years ago and was told that dangerous spiders are extremely rare in urban areas. The notorious Redback spider was apparently under threat from the common and harmless Crane fly or daddy long legs. Which takes away some of their street cred. As to the episode it’s ok, but not my favourite of this series. That will come later. A note on the guy playing Jack Robertson, Chris Noth played a recurring role on the tv show (and films) Sex in the City which was very big back in the late nineties. As I remember he is Character was a much nicer guy. (Though it wouldn’t be hard to be worse) You obviously filmed before the devastating results came in from the US elections. I literally have no words.

Jenny Smyth

So for me it's rated 1/5 and I have it ranked 137th/140 but I'll admit it's an unfair rating because as you rightly guessed the reason I hate this episode and won't watch it is because it terrifies me. So to it's credit it is the most scary Doctor Who story for me personally. I watched it once when it first aired in 2019 and that was it. And I'm not even sure now if I'm remembering right but I remember a scene with the Doctor stick her head under a gap in the floor? Nope, totally freaks me out, still get the shivers from that memory to this day. Doctor Who has done spiders before but they've never seemed as 'realistic' as they are done here. I do remember loving the beginning scene where Yaz invites the Doctor home.

Hi Nicole! When you watch the episodes with your boyfriend, is it dubbed in German, because that’s so cool! I wonder what it sounds like

DoctorWho

Wow!!! I’m so happy you loved this episode Nicole! I am a big defender of Jodie’s era. I genuinely love every single episode, and I am always rewatching her episodes. They are so perfect to me, and I always feel happy after watching them. This episode is one of my favourites so I am glad you liked it. I actually rewatched this one for Halloween so it was perfect. And I am so glad you are loving the fam, they are my favourite companions. I can’t wait to continue this great journey with you!! I give this episode an 8.7/10

DoctorWho

Just finished watching the reaction and you are still doing the final comments but I have to rush out so.... "Don't give me spiders" "Make it little ones" I am so sorry that you had such a terrible time but weren't the giant spider video effects astonishing|? The actress who plays Yaz's mum used to be in a British soap called Coronation Street with the man who plays Graham. Her character is the first person that his character meets in that programme! Yaz's mum is determined that Yaz will find someone to date/go out with. First she asks the Doctor and then she asks Ryan if Yaz is with them or if they are together. Jack Robertson is horrible and obnoxious but many people have said that he was probably right to shoot the giant spider rather than let it slowly suffocate. In fact some people felt that this spoilt the whole story! And that this Doctor went down in their estimation. Jack is very keen to tell everyone that he hates Trump though. I think the idea is that they are too alike. Graham's scenes with the ghost-memory of Grace are still heart-breaking to watch after all this time. And he and Ryan do start to bond a little more when they remember her and compare her to Ryan's father. I really like this episode except that the ending is too rushed and inconclusive. What happens to all the spiders after they are trapped? I hope your shoulder gets better soon and that the recent USA election result hasn't brought you down too much. Onwards and uopwards.
