Dr. Who Reaction Christmas Episode Series 10 - Twice upon a Time

Comments

Gosh I´m so sorry, I didn´t respond earlier. Thank you so much for your thoughts about the episode. :) And yes, I agree it was a great Farewell episode indeed :)

Nicologik

I'm looking forward to finding out what you make of it!

Stephen Males

Little to add to what the others have said. This is one of my favourite "Doctor farewell " stories, and I feel it works best by not having some sort of Big Bad - although there appear to be threats everywhere, everything is peacefully explained away. The First Doctor portrayal is problematic, but possibly more for those unfamiliar with the character; as it creates a distorted impression of his personality. I feel that Moffat was 'going for laughs' too much by exploiting the differences in attitudes between the two Doctors; but I forgive him, because his plot line for The Colonel was perfect.

Ian Smith

Again with those BBC Spoiler OMG, they don´t want you guys to have any surprises with this show. :/ I´ll talk about that Missy topic of yours in the next weeks Reaction, can´t belive I ignored the fact that we already had a female timeloard on Dr. Who :D I don´t know Mr. Pastry. Sounds cute though :) Haha yeah, this was an expensive Tissue Episode :D

Nicologik

Haha you don´t have to feel guilty. I know what you mean. It´s the same for me, watching a Buffy Reactor :) Your comment was alright. No need to apologize :) You were right to be honest. I mean, I figured that the first doctors finale must have happened at that planet, but since we only saw tiny bits of the Classic episode, they didn´t 100% clarify the whole story. So I get what you meant. :) I liked the comparison of the First Doctors attitude and the Peter doctors respons to it. Like I said in the Reaction, it shows how far we´ve come as a society, which I find very positive. :) I watched the new episode yesterday. Can´t wait for you to watch it, and tell me what you think about it :)

Nicologik

I was reffering to the "Original Doctor" when I said "OG". :) Cause he was the one, the Show started with. :) Since I don´t really know how the doctor behaved back then, for me it felt quite in character. And I liked the banter between those two, made the episode so much better. :) Thank you for not spoiling :)

Nicologik

Yeah, I agree 100%. It feels so sad, and like the end of an era. I feel you . :) Right? Time flies, this is bonkers. Feels as if I started a few months ago, not more. Wow. :)

Nicologik

Oh I had no idea this episode was based on a real event. That is even more heartwarming then, awww. Yeah, it´s true we´ve seen the out of control TARDIS before. It´s my bad, but I usually don´t really remember those "right after regeneration scenes" very well, cause I´m busy bawling my eyes out :D :D Haha that´s so funny, I just continued reading your message, after writing the last sentence, and you literally wrote the same thing with the bawling my eyes out haha :D I agree, the doctor´s dialogue in the end was a little too long, it felt just to obvious they wanted to drag the suspension. Haha that would have really been a great final line, since the Peter doctors best trait was his sarcasm. That would have been so funny. BBC should have asked you :)

"Sorry. So sorry. I don't suppose either of you is a doctor?", The Captain, "Twice upon a Time" It was wonderful to have another full two-Doctor episode. And it was really nice to see the black-and-white clips from the 1966 story brought into the New Who show. As you pointed out, they did the transition really well. David Bradley does look enough like the William Hartnell Doctor that you can believe it - his two companions in the New Who version perhaps don't look so much like the 1966 actors and that was a little jarring to people who had seen the orginal "Ben" and "Polly" in the 60s episodes. "I tell you what. These police boxes, they're ever so good, aren't they?", The Captain, "Twice upon a Time" Wonderful to get a back-story for the Lethbridge-Stewart family because the Brigadier is such a massive part of Classic Who history and, now, Who in general. And also good to get super-fan Mark Gatiss back again as an actor (rather than a writer). He had previously been under large amounts of makeup in "The Wedding of River Song" playing electrically-live chess with Matt's Doctor and also under makeup in "The Lazarus Experiment". I do enjoy his affection for the series. And he gets to play a "Lethbridge-Stewart" - so wonderful! And I love that line about police box TARDISs being "ever so good". I also like (well, I like the squirming feeling) of the dated attitudes of the first Doctor and the Captain towards women and Bill in particular. It's nice that the writer tied the resolution of the conflict between the Captain and his German foe with the historical Christmas Truce (the Christmas Armistice) which really did happen early in first year of WWI on 25 December 1914 at various places between the two sides - singing carols and (reportedly) playing football. The post-regeneration crisis of the TARDIS going out-of-control and the new Doctor tumbling towards the open TARDIS door - well, we've seen it before haven't we? Ok, you didn't - you were still bawling your eyes out at the loss of David. BTW: In my opinion, the low episode rating is more the lack of any big action fights or serious suspense in the episode rather than some bias against the new Doctor. (Although I am, possibly, overgenerous to my fellow Doctor Who fans) This was a nice thoughtful final episode which is not necessarily to everyone's taste. I rate it more highly than the IMDB rating. Although not up to a 10 - "Midnight", as you can check, you only rated 9.9! "Never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never, ever eat pears! ...", The Doctor, "Twice upon a Time" I found the Doctor's monologue at the end going on a bit too long. Perhaps it would work better if he had just had a few choice words in his final speech - like something he had said earlier in the episode. "Always remember where you parked.", The Doctor, "Twice upon a Time" Now, that would have been perfect as a final line!

This episode is always so bittersweet to me, it really is the end of an era. Will always love Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and 100% believe he is one of the best incarnations of the Doctor, period. I started SOBBING when Clara showed up at the end and I cant help but feel sad knowing that we're done with the 12th Doctor now. It almost gives me the same feeling about when we had to say goodbye to the Tenth, completely empty and sad hahahaha. I also love how we had a bunch of old music from previous Doctors and Series' in the soundtrack of this episode too. I'm so glad you liked this episode, as did I. I seriously can't believe its been 2 years since I first found you on Series 4, and now here we are going on to Series 11. Can't wait for next week!

I have a question. What does OG stand for when you are referring to the OG Doctor? I love this episode. It's a 5/5 for me. I can't tell you where I rank it because my laptop is away for repair but I'm sure it's on my top 20 & it's my favourite Christmas story. I like that it's very light hearted for most of it until the end and that in the end there was not really an enemy which made a nice change. I know others had problems with how the first Doctor is protrayed here but it didn't bother me. The novel of this story has it that the first Doctor is behaving this way simply to annoy the Peter Doctor 😄 As others have said the Lethbridge Stewart in this episode is possibly the Brigadier's father. Then we get the Brigadier in the classic series and obviously Kate Stewart, his daughter in new Who. I'll keep my opinion on the new Doctor to myself for now so as to not influence your reaction but looking forward to seeing your thoughts next week.

Well, that was a reaction and a half. I feel guilty to enjoy watching someone else cry but if you hadn't I would have felt cheated. Especially when Clara appears which I still can't see without tears. Even though I can now see that Jenna must have filmed her part of the "conversation" quite separately from Peter's half of it. Clara is and probably always will be my favourite of all the New Who companions. The Christmas armistice and the WW1 soldier saying his name have an effect too! As Jenny says, he must be our Brigadier's grandfather at least. Oh, and apologies for my unnecessarily cryptic comments las week. Rewatching this story it is clear that they tell us everything about why the two Doctors are both in the snowy landscape. The first Doctor's final story was set at the South Pole and that was where he (and we) first encountered the Cybermen. It was also the place where he regenerated although the process didn't have a name back then. I love this story as much as you do but I do know why some people dislike it. It's because of the way the first Doctor is portrayed. Not the actor but the fun that is had with his out of date attitudes and unselfconscious sexism. There were a lot of things in those early 1960s scripts that would not fly today but some long-term Whovians felt that the writer overstated that side of things and somehow "spoiled" his legacy. I found it all quite funny, especially as the comment about a "jolly good smacked bottom" ids actually a direct quote from a classic story. The first Doctor says it to his granddaughter! It is a good thing that you were not looking closely at the screen when the opening credits started because they mention Pearl Mackie (ie Bill) which is a great big spoiler when you don't already know she will be in it. Some people did object to the Doctor becoming female but I don't this that affected the rating for this episode. I am very much looking forward to your reaction to Jody Whitaker's first episode. A new Doctor, completely different to Peter,. And. as with Matt's first episode, a new show runner too. Goodbye Steven Moffat, hello Chris Chibnall. We had to wait quite a while to see all of that!

Stephen Males

I feel for you. In the uk Jodie Whittaker was announced ahead of time. So we had some warning. It’s weird but give her a chance. Although the dr has never been female, there are some instances of timelords changing gender. Most notably, the Master/Missy. Also in the episode Hellbent the general changes gender. As to the episode I think David Bradley does a great job portraying the first doctor. Also Mark Gatiss playing lethbridge Stewart’s grandfather ? I’m not sure it would be noticed by many, but Peter refers to the first dr as Mr Pastry. Mr pastry was a character on children’s television in the 1960’s the actor who played him portrayed the first Doctor in the 1983 20th anniversary ep the five doctors. I enjoyed watching this with you, but I need to go buy some more tissues.
