I have no words to describe this episode .......

Dr. Who Reaction Series 9 Episode 11 - Heaven sent

Comments

Wow I think you are the first person telling me you don´t like this episode. But I know how you feel, I´m getting "Girl in the fireplace" flashbacks when I hear stories like yours :D And I know how you felt, not wanting to watch the reaction to the episode, if you don´t like it. I love Buffy, but I do have episodes that I wouldn´t watch ever again, not even for the best reactor in the world :D Your ratings page is incredibly useful, I´m happy to see it, every time I open it :) Such a grateful gift for the whole community :)

"Every hundred years a little bird comes. It sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. ... And when the entire mountain is chiselled away, the first second in eternity will have passed. ...", The Doctor, "Heaven Sent" I like the Brothers Grimm story reference here. These series episodes are not my favourite of the New Who series (I am excluding "Face the Raven", which I like, and is tied but not actually part of the finale episodes). I do like people loving episodes, and everyone else loves this one. But, on the other hand, I love "Love & Monsters" and most people don't. It is nice that the episode is atypical - and I'm all for this. And it is a solid episode. The fact that it is atypical is not the reason I don't really like it - I have some problems with the plot of the finale as a whole. I don't want to mention anything specific because I'm just happy that lots of people love this episode. So, it has taken me ages - many weeks - to actually get around to watching it with you. I was a litte bit busy but, honestly, I just kept putting it off. "You must think that's a hell of a long time. ... Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird", The Doctor, "Heaven Sent" Thanks for the call-out for the ratings history page. I does make me happy that it has been useful.

A 4 out of 5 is still very good :) I´d give it a 6 out of 5, so we are back at 5 out of 5 :D

I'm only catching up on this tonight, as I was away over the weekend. It's a highly original episode in its concept, and it's well executed. And as an exploration of grief, it's brilliant. However, I have issues with how it's connected with certain things. If they'd not done that, then this could well have been a 5 out of 5 from me. But they did do that, so it's "only" a 4 out of 5.

I know there´s a lot of behind the scenes stuff for Dr. Who. I´ve watched some of it myself already :)

I said something at my book group yesterday about our current book being the sort that had a number of plot devices that probably weren't plausible or true to life But it didn't matter because the story and characterisation were so good and the story was so well told that it gripped me and moved me anyway. And then on the spur of the moment I added "it's like watching some episodes of Doctor Who". I wasn't thinking of this episode or the fact that the reaction was that day though, unless I was doing so unconsciously.

I’ve seen interviews and Doctor Who Confidential with David, Matt and Peter respectively. Also the late great John Hurt. John Hurt reprised his role as the War Doctor for Big Finish Doctor Who Audio Dramas.

James Gorman

I´m so happy you enjoyed the reaction. :) And I agree with you 100% this episode is a Masterpiece! Peters performance was spot on , he is a fantastic actor :) We will have more Game Nights in the future, don´t worry. I´m looking forward to meeting you in Discord one day :)

Nicologik

Well, I do have a Buffy episode that will always have that place for me. But that doesn´t mean I can´t put others up there as well. And "Midnight" and "Heaven sent" are definately up there as well :)

Nicologik

I agree with you :) But I don´t really care about certain flaws when it comes to such a great episode. I´m happy to ignore the details when it comes to an episode like this. :)

Nicologik

I is indeed an astonishing episode. :) Yes I do agree about Sherlocks mind palace as well. :) Haha that underwear bit is really funny :D I didn´t even think about that. :D Also the first one wouldn´t have found skulls on the ground of the sea. But I don´t care about possible flaws cause this episode brought me so much joy, what a Masterpiece :)

Nicologik

Thank you so much. I enjoyed it as well. :) I had a lot of fun :)

Nicologik

I´m so glad you enjoyed the reaction to this wonderful episode. That´s so true, the TARDIS scene is very similar to Sherlocks mind palace. :) What an episode, I wish I hadn´t seen it yet and could watch it again for the first time :D

Nicologik

Yes there is :)

Nicologik

I´m so sorry about the microphone. I got angry at myself when I noticed it. :/ I´m gonna try and think of a workaround in case that happens again.

Nicologik

I´d love to meet him some day :)

Nicologik

Yes it is :)

Probably one of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who, EVER. The cinematography is undeniably beautiful. This is an episode I've been waiting to see you watch and I'm so glad you liked it! Peter is absolutely amazing in this episode, not to say that he isn't amazing in any other episode, but this one, his performance was INCREDIBLE. I absolutely adore the music in this episode too. The soundtrack that plays whilst the montage happens of The Doctor going through billions and billions of years in the confession dial is amazing. I always have "The Shepherds Boy" on my playlist ahaha. This is one of those episodes where I really do not understand how anyone could ever dislike this episode. But I of course respect opinions. Also, I unfortunately couldn't be there for the game night the other day because I was busy but I'll try get the next one! :)

Still my favorite episode of television to this day. Nothing has surpassed this for me so far. I'm fairly certain that this episode won an Emmy also. Rachel Talaylay, Moffat and Peter absolutely smashed the execution of this out the park. Every moment is crafted like a painting, it's so great.

DeathSwitch

This episode is a masterclass in performance, direction, editing, and music scoring. Is it therefore a masterpiece? To me it feels like superbly ,beautifully, wonderfully constructed artifice. It exists to get the Doctor back to Gallifrey; and it does it beautifully - but it also skirts around things like 'plot' and 'logical construction' and relies instead on Capaldi (imo, the best actor to ever play the Doctor) and Rachel Tallalay (imo, the best Director to ever work on Doctor Who) to pull it off. Which they do.

Ian Smith

A great reaction to an astonishing episode. Peter almost completely alone. Just a nameless, possibly formless ghoul and very occasionally an image of Clara in his mind. I do agree with Jenny about the mind palace in Sherlock. It's a very similar construct. I do love the sneaky way that Steven Moffat gives you what later seem to be obvious clues about what is happening and then gives you another image straight away that stops you from processing the information. "If I didn't know better I'd say I have time travelled", the identical set of clothes drying in front of the fire for him to change into*, the skull superimposed over the Doctor's face and they are just the same shape etc. As you say, great cinematography. And great sound too. The music is really effective in this one. I don't want to say any more as I mustn't spoil the next episode! *We have to assume that the first version of the Doctor to arrive in this place just took his clothes off at this point and did everything else in the plot naked or in his underwear.

I really enjoyed playing Time guesser last night with you and Andrew , just in case you didn’t know it was me my handle on discord is merlinscat.

Jenny Smyth

Wow ! That was so good. I really enjoyed watching this with you and I’m so glad you liked it. I had to rewatch it when it first came out, because I didn’t get it straight away. Peter Capaldi gives such a great performance in this and Moffat’s writing is really on point. The scenes in the Tardis remind me of Sherlock in his mind palace. Also the music is so good in this episode, and really adds to the emotional impact of the story.

Jenny Smyth

There is the Hybrid story arc that needs to be resolved!

James Gorman

Another masterpiece episode, this time performed by Peter Capaldi. If every episode were this good, we'd feel so much emotion that we wouldn't last long... Of course, his microphone remains silent during some of the most epic moments, but don't worry, we're used to it.

monguru (Rose Tyler fan)

Peter Capaldi is very giggly at times. Both David Tennant and Matt Smith are a hoot!

James Gorman

Ah the first part of the two part finale of Series 9. “HEAVEN SENT” is quite incredible.
