Dr. Who Series 9 - The Girl who died

Comments

"I know where I got this face and I know what it is for.", ... "To remind me to hold me to the mark. I'm the Doctor and I save people!", The Doctor, "The Girl Who Died" Hey, a "Life of Brian" reference in the reaction - nice! (Although, perhaps "Holy Grail"?). I did like that the Doctor tried to convince the village that he was Odin - until a better, more impressive Odin turns up - and all the Doctor has is a yo-yo. BTW It's not the first time he's tried the trick of being a god. He tried in a Classic Who episode - and that didn't go too well either. "How's it going?", "Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great", The Doctor, "The Girl Who Died" We have another occurance of the one of the Classic Who catch phrases. We, Classic Who viewers, like that sort of thing. I do think the Doctor's final plan of feeding the Mire a visual illusion of a sea monster, and then making a recording of them just reacting to Ashildr's puppet was quite nice. And I liked the "fire in the water" clue hanging around in the story until it suddenly occurs to the Doctor what it meant. BTW: you commented that the Doctor was 900 years old - in the Matt Doctor finale episode this time was pushed out to over 2000. So, that's the appoximate age now - he spent a LONG time on Trenzalore in that episode. This was a good "historical+alien" episode. "So what are you? Farmers, fishermen, ... web designers.", The Doctor, "The Girl Who Died"

I think Moffett put the scene of the Capaldi Doctor recognizing the face in his first episode just in case he wanted to include a reason sometime later which he finally did here. The end scene is just showing that time is passing for Ashildr, I think the beams of light is suppose to represent sun rises, and how that affects her over that time. While I've been waiting for you to get to this story because of the appearance of David's Doctor I think this episode is just simply ok, not the greatest especially after the first two stories but the ending with Ashildr and the flashback to David's Doctor is good and I like how Doctor like Clara is when she is on the Mire's spaceship with Ashidr standing in as a companion figure.

I always really enjoy watching this episode. It has a good balance of knockabout comedy and serious issues about life and death, whether fighting is more honourable than running away etc. I love the setting and Clara's way of dealing with the Mire when she and Ashildr get "beamed up". You are right about the relationship between her and The Doctor which just gets better, even to the point of not needing words sometimes. Plus he seems to have finally overcome his aversion to hugging. The defeating of the MIre is achieved a bit too easily I suppose. But the method is pretty clever with Ashildr's perception of her puppet as a real dragon being broadcast from her helmet directly into the technology the Mire use to perceive their surroundings. And I love the idea of addiing the Benny Hill theme to the video of it. Maisie Williams was (I think) about 17 or 18 when she filmed this episode. It was after she had been in GoT for some time but before it had finished. Ashildr is definitely an intriguing character. A bit of a misfit but she loves her village and the people she lives with. The Doctor can't quite make her out and Clara certainly seems to like her even though she kind of sabotages the attempt to avoid conflict when they are on the Mire's spaceship. As Jenny says, Ashildr's scene at the end shows her smiling at the beginning but not looking at all happy as time goes by. The Doctor even says that Immortality can be hard to take if other people don't have it too so you keep losing them. Oh, and this "Hybrid" was mentioned by Davros in part two of the series' opening story. Some Time Lord myth about a hybrid creature that might be half Dalek and half Time Lord.

This is one of my favourite episodes. In fact this whole series is pretty perfect imo, except for one episode. Yes you are correct the girl is Maisie Williams from GoT. I feel Peter is really getting into his stride now, his acting is so good. I think the IMDb rating is a bit mean, I would give it 8.9 The ending scene I believe is time passing for Ashildr, you see the background moving very fast and she is getting older and her face is changing as she realises what immortality means, at least that’s how I interpreted it. x

Yeah, I'm in agreement with IMDB over this episode. I love the final 15 minutes, and all the ramifications that are potentially brought up; but the rest is basically 'file and forget' material for me. I remember highly anticipating this story at the time, have been much impressed with the writer Jamie Mathieson's previous two stories. This time around it felt too much as though had been hired simply to perform some sort of pre-designed remit: Vikings battling nasty alien + introducing a younger character that Moffat had already devised. (I may be wrong on the last point; but it's the impression I get). For me,the big question that this story presents is - what is the significance of Ashildr as we moved forward? Much depends on how this new element is resolved.
