Dr. Who Series 8 - In the Forest of the night

Dr. Who Series 8 - In the Forest of the night

I didn´t know that Poem. Thank you for letting me know :) To be honest I don´t really care for the science behind storylines as much. I mean, the show is a Sci Fi Show, and it´s about Timetravelling and different Universes and all that, which by itself is already not realistic in my eyes. It could be, but we don´t know so.... I don´t mind them using outer space non scientific storylines. :) Eversince my rewatch I did change my ratings of the worst stories I´ve watched. My new worst episode(s) are "Daleks in Manhattan" and "Evolution of the Daleks" . Rewatching them was quite annoying to be honest. So those are my new No Go episodes :D

Re: episode ratings Ah, and we agree on the second low-rated one too. BTW Both #10 and #4 in your list (assuming I've worked out the censorship "*"s correctly) partly share some of my issues with this episode - I don't believe in the scientific set-up and if there's not a great story with fantastic characters to boost things, it's not getting a good rating from me. On the other hand, I like "Love & Monsters" (the characters) - and "The Idiot's Lantern" doesn't annoy me as much as it does other people.

"Stick to the path, Red Riding Hood.", The Doctor, "In the Forest of the Night" The first thing I noticed, before starting the reaction, was that by chance you selected the perfect background image for this particular episode. And, as the episode started, I was reminded of the "Small Worlds" Torchwood episode as you, yourself, mentioned. If you're not aware, the title of the episode comes from William Blake's poem "The Tyger" - "Tyger, Tyger, burning bright, in the forests of the night, ..." - which is probably why they put a tiger into the show. This episode is very green and very pretty and the young actors do really well but the story idea is scientically silly. As I mentioned in my comments about "Kill the Moon" I obviously allow a certain amount of given non-science stuff to set up the scenario of a show (bigger-on-the-inside, time-travelling TARDIS, regenerations, ...) etc. However, when they tells us for the plot of a single episode that stuff we know about is wrong, they cross a line. Again, like "Kill the Moon", I could imagine this story set on an alien planet that had a different biological history with a similar story idea - I might be ok with it. But by making it about our Earth and using a few science-y words incorrectly - it makes the story silly and it annoys me. Then, there would need to be something else - like some fantastic characters in the story or a clever resolution or something - to pick up the story rating for me. I did like the metaphor of the sugar in a small glass of Coke as an explanation of the TARDIS being bigger on the inside. BTW: The lowest IMDB rated story you've checked was "Fear Her" (5.8) so this one at 6.1 was pretty close to that. "I thought it would spoil an otherwise enjoyable walk.", Clara (about why she hadn't mentioned the destruction of the planet to the kids), "In the Forest of the Night"

Thank you for telling me about episode 12, Andrew let me know already. Now we just have to hope I wont forget :D :D I agree with you about the sister at the end of the episode. It didn´t make much sense. But overall I really enjoyed this episode. I´m osrry that you didn´t really. Thank you for your bottom 10 stories. I do agree with some of them. I guess many wouldn´t agree with "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS" I had the feeling many fans loved that episode. And I personally would take "The caretaker" and "Love and monsters" off that list. But it was really interesting to read your list, thank you so much for posting it :)

It´s strange how people start arguing about the show not beeing "science proof" now . The whole premise of the show is about time travelling and multiple universes, aliens and spaceships. I don´t say those don´t exist, but I mean, it´s a science fiction show. Why would people argue about reality in the first place then? I don´t get that. I get the people who don´t enjoy watching Clara and Danny, but that science argument is just crazy to me. I do understand Clara. I found myself in a similar situation when I was younger. It´s really hard to make a choice in a situation like this and I do understand that this can go on for a while. Sometimes choice are so hard that you don´t even want to make them. It doesn´t really bother me that it takes Clara a while to get a clear head in this situation.

I´m glad you enjoyed this episode this time :) Actually while watching I didn´t see a callback to the moon episode. But thank you for letting me know about it :)

Ok first off because I don't know how far you get ahead with the episodes, although I'm sure Andrew will also point it out but when you get to episode 12 you need to watch the credits. The opening has something cool although it doesn't really matter if you miss it but you'll want to let the end credits play as well. Right I guess we need to talk about this episode. And after the last couple of episodes it was going so well. Lets start with my ratings. 2/5 and currently 138th/140. Yeah that's right there is only two stories I think are worse then this one. Again we have a silly episode and to be honest it's mainly one of the characters walking around. It's a lightweight story before the finale. That said I've always liked how it leans into the more fairy tale aspects. One of the main problems I have is with the sister turning up in a bush at the end but this time I actually caught the dialogue that seems to explain it, as Stephen also points out so I guess I can't count that against it now. In fact as much as I was dreading having to watch this again I quite enjoyed it this time round. Also as someone was watching what stories I think are the worse so now we're at this stage I'll post what my bottom 10 stories are minus any upcoming ones. Counting down to the worse we have: number 10 - ****** ** number 9 - Journey to the centre of the Tardis (series 7) number 8 - Nightmare in Silver (series 7) number 7 - Love and Monsters (series 2) number 6 - The Caretaker (series 8) number 5- Kill the Moon (series 8) number 4 - ********* ** *** ** number 3 - In the forest of the night (series 8) number 2 - The Idiot's Lantern (Series 2) number 1 - Fear Her (series 2) Although after this reaction I think I will swop number 6 and number 3 around.

This episode gets an incredible amount of online criticism which sometimes crosses the line into plain abuse. Like Kill the Moon, the main dilemma relies on some very questionable "science" and I suppose some people just can't get past that problem. There are also some who just dislike Clara and Danny and their whole storyline so an episode which has a lot of their relationship in it won't please them at all. I rather enjoyed the school kids' discussions of the fact that two of their teachers are in love and the way they cheered the kiss. And I love seeing London covered in trees and foliage. The girl who plays Maebh is really good and the scenes with the wolves and the tiger are a great spectacle. There's loads to like in my opinion. I have seen comments that the return of Maebh's sister Annabel isn't explained properly but she is mentioned at the end of Maebh's message to the world so I guess either she heard the plea to come home or (and I prefer this) the trees heard it and returned her. Which is silly but Doctor Who is allowed to be silly sometimes. I think that Clara's character does develop from episode to episode but the basic core still the same as it was at the beginning of the series. And she is still caught between her love for Danny and her (different kind of) love for the Doctor. Desperately wanting to keep both. But in this episode she has moved closer to Danny as even the children could tell. She still loves having this amazing friend with a time machine who can solve problems and she still cares about him. She wants him to save himself after all. But when she really has to choose where to stay (or more importantly who to stay with) she chooses to stay on Earth with Danny. Of course as soon as she doesn't absolutely have to make that choice she is back in the TARDIS. Which I do understand as I kind of have a feeling that I would have done the same thing.

Yeah I knew this one was rated low, it often gets way down in peoples ranking lists. I never cared for this episode when it first came out, but hey surprise surprise I actually enjoyed it this time. I agree the acting from the kids is good especially Maeve. I see what you mean about Clara, I think she just wants both parts of her life, and I don’t think she can have that. She needs to make a choice, and Danny is actually being very fair in wanting her to be straight with him. Did you notice the call back to Kill the moon ? When the dr said I walk your earth and breathe your air. He really does care about Clara and he didn’t want to leave her when he thought the earth was doomed. There’s a lot to like in this episode, but if I’m ever face to face with a tiger I don’t think that a torch shined in it’s eyes is going to get me out of trouble. xx
