SSS 6: Conscription

Forced into serving with no choice and under the pain of death if you don't is slavery in my book. Color it how you like. Look at how conscripts in the real world are treated. Most of them , all most all, cannot raise past the enlisted ranks. And most do not want to be there. In the ranks they are treated like second class to those that joined freely. A lot of times treated like cannon fodder. It makes for a piss poor army look again at the real world and how a certain country is faring with a conscript army, they had to beg another country to give them more conscripts and are still being fought to a stand still. And imho losing to a country much small than them, who have a volunteer army. ( Look at the Roman army to see how it's done, yes they used conscription, it was at the local level and it came with great rewards for serving. One being the most prized citizenship if you did not alreay have it. They did not grab random people and force them to serve. A non-Roman could walk by a legion and had no fear of being grabbed and forced to serve. The only people forced into the army were slaves.) I will keep with the story because I like your writing, to see where it goes, I really do not like how it started.

In fact, historical real-world slavery sometimes involves a fixed timespan, and debt slaves were essentially paid in that they were repaying their debt. All that to say that I’m uncomfortable with this as a story mechanism for the start of a military career.

Super happy to hear that you're enjoying the series ^.^ The point you raised, that it's unfair to take access away from content existing patrons already had, is a great point. I think I underestimated how improper that would be, and it would be better to focus on creating new Highlord and above exclusive side-stories as opposed to moving the entire serial over. TL;DR - I'm leaning more towards not doing it now ^.^

2025-12-08 20:05:20 +0000 UTCLoving the new story so far, it has been a great read. One concern as a Lord-tier patron, though. Since we already have access to this series, it would feel pretty bad if it shifted to Highlord-only. Losing or degrading access to something we are already paying to support stings a bit, even if the pricing logic is sound. Personally, I would be happier seeing new bonuses or side content added for Highlord/Greatlord rather than existing series being moved up a tier. For what it is worth, I have already had to drop several authors I could not afford to keep supporting. So rather than pushing me up a tier, I would simply stop reading the story, which sucks after I'm already a bit hooked. That said, I appreciate the transparency in sharing your thinking.
