Ohhhhh that's true hahaha 🤣

Nicologik

You were thinking of polo. :-)

Andrew Gwilliam

You´re welcome :) Yes I have seen the scanner beeing used in New Who already. But this was the first time in Classic Who :) Thank you for clarifying the use of the word "Master" :) I don´t know any Cricket players, so I didn´t notice what they did there :D I´m glad fox hunting has been banned :)

Nicologik

Thank you for clarifying. I thought that might be the case, when I saw Ann. :) I liked this story, too :)

Nicologik

It´s one thing not to like an episode, but to pull the story to bits on an audio commentary hmmmm, that´s unfortunate. i had fun while watching it, and you´re right, sometimes it´s nice to have a little change regarding the big bad. :)

Nicologik

I had fun watching this episode, too :) Strange some cast members didn´t like it. I always thought Cricket was played on horses, but maybe I am confusing it with another sport. :)

Nicologik

I also heard that three of the cast dismissed this story and I do find that puzzling because it seems like a lot of fun to me. Both to watch and (I would have thought) to make. Peter Davidson (the Doctor) does love his cricket and he might have enjoyed the chance to play it on camera more if the weather had been better. All of Tegan's expressions that baffle his Lordship are well known to Australians and most Brits. But not to an upper class man of the 1920s I suppose.

Generally I enjoy listening to the Dr Who audio commentaries on DVD/Blu-ray - but the one for Black Orchid is curiously disheartening, as Peter Davison,Janet Fielding (Tegan) and Mathew Waterhouse (Adric) all pull the story to bits! Only poor old Sarah Sutton (Nyssa) seemed to like it,but she was ignored by the other three. Myself,I don't understand the dislike. I think it's a neat little two -parter, with a decent atmosphere. There's nothing sci-fi about it, but that's fine - it's good to have a change from 'nasty aliens' once in a while.

Ian Smith

Hahaha! I was pretty certain that was the case :)

Ian Smith

Um, the "heart" was for the info - thanks - not the continued legality of fox-hunting

Andrew Vignaux

No, it is the case they look at Nyssa oddly because she looks identical to Ann. A curious story to choose to watch, I'm guessing because it's only two parts but I'm not complaining. I like this story and always happy to see some more classic Who.

Technically, Fox hunting is still perfectly legal in the UK - the difference being that the Foxes must be shot (after having been flushed by the hounds); rather than having the hounds kill them.

"Why do I always let my curiosity get the better of me?", The Doctor, "Black Orchid" What a wonderful surprise! And a very unexpected episode. It's nice to see the TARDIS crew enjoying themselves - until the final scene. We have seen the scanner used in New Who. In "The Beast Below", Amy and the Doctor use it to view Starship UK before leaving the TARDIS. But it's generally more fun for the characters to just blunder outside and get into the adventure quickly. Lord Cranleigh uses the word "mater" - from Latin. Lord Cranleigh would have gone to a public school (a private school like in "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood") where he would have learned Latin. "mater" was a commonly used term at the private schools. Because of the cricket game, the story writer can get away with a nice misdirection. They mention "The Master" and "the other Doctor" - and we know what that means. But it turns out it is a reference to an extremely famous cricket player - Dr. W. G. Grace. Incidentally, this Doctor Who episode is referenced on the wikipedia page on W. G. Grace - Doctor Who gets everywhere! Lady Cranleigh says that "the hunt isn't good enough". This is a reference to fox-hunting :-( Fox-hunting was only banned reasonably recently. It's difficult to see, but the weather during the outside filming was quite bad - very windy and dark and rainy. The field for the cricket game looks particularly wet. "As a boy, I always wanted to drive one.", The Doctor on steam engines, "Black Orchid"
