Dr. Who Series 5 - The time of Angels

THEY´RE BACK !!!!!!

Dr. Who Series 5 - The time of Angels

Comments

Tbh, this story doesn't break continuity at all. Nowhere was it stated that the angels can't kill by other means, but their prefered means is zapping people back and consume the energy. In these episodes however, they have an energy source far greater than the tiny amounts they might get from zapping people back, and zapping people back in this instance might cause issues for them aswel. Breaking continuity would be if they said "the angels only means of killing is zapping people back", but nowhere is that stated. This just extends on their lore, and, fair enough if you don't like the lore added, but it doesn't break continuity.

I think, if Doctor Who has any rules at all, it's that we can ignore throwaway comments that mess around with the show's history. The best thing, in this case, is to assume that River made some mistake when landing and was then joking or trolling with The Doctor to see if he would actually believe her. That's how I like to see it anyway.

Thank you for explaining the box and coordinates issue. I didn´t really get that one, because I was too confused about wether the woman was River or not. :D I´ll pay attention to this one in the editing. :) I felt the very same about the TARDIS landing sound. It has always been THE TARDIS feature, from the very start. And they just throw the whole thing out of the window. Didn´t like that one, and I don´t like to think about it every time I´ll hear it in the future. Haha yes that strap scene was sooo funny :D I loved that they left it in there. :) Thank you for pointing out, that the Angels didn´t kill people in Blink. I didn´t remember it when I watched the epsiode. But it´s true, they really changed that one. Hmmm that´s very unfortunate to be honest.

Hahaha thank you for the rating overview :D :D They way you wrote it is pretty funny, but it´s also very usefull for me, knowing that I´m not the only one :) Oh, that´s very unfortunate. The BBC seems to have no feeling for the tensity of a Dr. Who Cliffhanger, lol.

Thank you for clarifying Richard :)

Thank you for clarifying the wife issue. I was really confused wether he said it in a serious way or not. Would have loved to go back again, but unfortunately this is not possible in the middle of a reaction :D :D Hahaha I just wrote my previous sentence, and have now read your take on me reacting, not beeing able to understand everything 100%. What a coincidence :D :D I am really so grateful for all Patreons always clarifying things I didn´t understand. It is so much needed for me to get the full picture. So thank you :)

Yes, I really feel like this the first episode this series, that feels like Dr. Who for me again. :) I always forget that you had to wait so much longer for certain things to happen. Wow 2 years, that´s such a long time. I have watched some episodes of GOT but that was years ago, and I have no memories of any characters at all. :) Hahaha "Let´s seperate". Like in every horror movie :D :D

"Are you all Mr Grumpy Face today?", Amy, "The Time of Angels" I think I like this story less than the average New Who viewer. I like River's escape from the spaceship by burning "Hello, sweetie" into the case of the recording box and mentioning the coordinates in the video recording knowing that the Doctor will find the box in a museum at some point in the future and travel back in time to catch her. That's clever (and a bit trusting) on River's part. I didn't really like it when Moffat allowed a finger click to open the TARDIS door in the Library story, and I like the gag that the TARDIS landing sound is just the Doctor's mistake even less. I have no problems with River being a better TARDIS operator - and the "you were busy that day" line was fine. The TARDIS sound was a feature from the first episode of Classic Who, and to throw it away for a joke - that loses the episode rating points for me. [I am aware that fans have tried to justify River's line - but it all comes down to the whole history of Who vs Moffat just writing the line for a joke. Yes, I am definitely Mr Grumpy Face today.] I liked the line when the doctor says "I'll never get done saving you." after learning how many colonies humanity has. Remember when the Doctor tore the strap from the ceiling? That was originally a blooper moment but it was funny so they filmed it again for the episode. So why do the Angels kill people in this story rather than zapping them back in time as they did in "Blink"? I suppose it's because the writer wants the Angels to have a voice in this particular story and if you just zap people away you can't use them to talk through. I like alien continuity in my Doctor Who - this story is not an example of it. "Is she going to be your wife one day?", "Yes, you're right. I am definitely Mr Grumpy Face today", Amy and The Doctor, "The Time of Angels"

Most people seem to rate the first three episodes of Series 5 as something like this: good (ep. 1); okay (ep. 2); and poor (ep. 3). And then we have this episode! Steven Moffat is on record as acknowledging that he didn't focus enough on the second and third episodes, although I don't know if that's because of his work on "Sherlock" or because of all the other things he had to do for "Doctor Who". Regardless, he made this episode count. Unfortunately the BBC mucked up the broadcast, just like they did with "Rose": when the cliffhanger is being built up, they superimposed over the bottom of the screen a cheery little cartoon banner advertising another show (I can't remember if there was audio with it). Way to ruin the dramatic tension!

So when Amy asks the doctor if river is his future wife, he says "yes" pause "I am mr grumpy face today", so he doesn't actually answer her question, he ignores it, but its left unclear anyway.

I'll give my ranking on the next part as I always rank the two parters together, but I love this episode especially that cliff-hanger and the Doctor's speech about traps. Fun fact: This was actually the first episode that Matt filmed. Funny fact: During the scene at the start where River lands in the Tardis on top of Matt, Alex's knee accidently connected with a certain part of Matt's body. Couple of things that you missed but may pick up in editing. River didn't say who trained her to fly the Tardis, just that she was trained by the best and the Doctor wasn't there that day. The Doctor never said that River was his wife. Amy asks him in conversation, is she your wife?, and he says 'yes, you're right', before clarifying he's agreeing with her earlier statement about being grumpy. Never be sorry about missing stuff or misunderstanding. You're' reacting, meaning you can't just sit there in silence and absorb everything, we can always clarify things later for you. I've jokingly said before to reactors that this era of Who is where you need to start keeping notes lol. Also don't feel bad you didn't get River's name straight away. It's been a little while and I'm guessing you don't rewatch episodes as much as fan normally would. I also watch one reactor who didn't remember a major character that had appeared only two episodes previously.

This is the episode when the 11th Doctor really becomes The Doctor. And, interestingly I read that this is the first story of this series that was filmed. And River's in it! And the Angels are in it! Of course we had to wait two years to see River for the second time so the shock was even greater. It was nearly three years after Blink too and I don't think anyone was expecting to see The Angels again. I can't remember if you said that you have or haven't watched Game of Thrones but the actor who plays the military Bishop, Father Octavia, in this also played a character called Jorah in GoT. Oh and in answer to your comment about the Doctor not learning from previous experiences and wondering if that included the classic ones. When the programme started with the first Doctor, he and his companions were always splitting up to investigate a situation and it always resulted in somebody getting into trouble. I can still remember my dad sarcastically saying "let's separates" as soon as they all left the Tardis after landing in a new place.
