Dr. Who Series 5 - Victory of the Daleks

Comments

Haha this is what you get if you read and reply to comments a few minutes after getting up in the morning. The part of your brain that questions things might still be asleep :D :D

First of all, sorry for my late reply. And second, thank you so much for the explanation of the Daleks. I really missed that bit in the episode. The Daleks really reminded me of the Teletubbies when I watched the episode. I just didn´t say anything, because I didn´t want to make fun of them while watching. But it´s nice to know I wasn´t the only one with that idea :D Thank you for you opinion about this episode, too. I didn´t like it very much either, so I guess we´re on the same boat here. :)

No silly ! not true, be funny if it was but you know me. I like to make you giggle occasionally. Everyone needs a little smile now and again #teledaleks

Ok, people have already explained the thing about how Amy should remember the events of Stolen Earth/Journey's End, I'll move on to the Daleks. There was an easy to miss bit where the Dalek explains the various different Daleks. Orange Scientist, Blue Strategist, Red Drone. Yellow Eternal and White Supreme Dalek. The back was redesigned so that different appendices could come out such as a claw but ultimately this didn't come about and so they were left looking rather hunchbacked. Also because of the different colours they were at the time unfavourably compared to the Teletubbies, a popular children's programme from the late 90's. Personally, I don't mind them, but I like the classic look more. Also, I felt like they had done it just maybe to sell more action figures at the time. I'm also not keen on the story itself. I rank it at 96. There are some scenes I like such as the Spitfires in space, which looks cool, but it bugs me that they are supposed to have had the conversation with Bracewell, adapted the planes and got them into space in the space of ten minutes. I'm also not keen on the fact that they managed to defuse a bomb by the power of love.

I´m happy you seem to like the story more than other viewers of the show. :) You´re right, the Daleks plan worked out. I also agree with your point of view about the reasonableness in Alien plans. :) I didn´t know they rewrote certain lines to make them fit to the new actor. But I really like that. It just shows that they are really invested in their show, and want it to be good. :) Are there any meme examples you could maybe post to our Discord. Only if you want to. :) I have never heard of that show, in which Bill Paterson had a role. Doesn´t ring a bell.

Nicologik

Haha really? This is so funny :D

Hmm it´s interesting how opinions differ, when it comes to Amy remembering the Daleks. Some say she should know, other say she can´t. Not everything seems to be easy in this universe. :) Well, to be honest, I didn´t really know what to say about those scenes. Personally to me, I didn´t feel offended about any of the things that were said. But you never know, what people are watching the reactions. So I always try to avoid political topics in general. I know about the Daleks and that they were supposed to work as a metaphor. If you know about it, it´s pretty obvious to be honest. :) Thank you for telling me your opinion about the story. I was wondering wether I was the only one who didn´t like it as much.

Nicologik

Thank you for the explanation. That´s really quite a complex universe. :)

Nicologik

Thank you for your comment Radócz. That´s right he told her about so many things. But she didn´t really understand what he said. :)

"I am your soldier" - Dalek, "Victory of the Daleks" I think I like this story more than the average New Who viewer. The writer (Mark Gatiss) put in references to Classic Who and that always makes me like the story a bit more. The Dalek's plan is also quite reasonable - in Doctor Who, reasonableness has never been a necessary feature of the various alien's plans. The Daleks have a problem in that the Progenitor machine doesn't recognise them as Daleks, so they arrange for the Doctor to testify that he does recognise them. Good plan - and it worked. Apparently the writer (Mark Gatiss) wrote the draft of the script before Matt Smith was cast so he wrote it to a "generic" Doctor - probably the Third Doctor. After Matt was cast, Mark re-wrote some of the Doctor's lines to suit Matt's speech patterns. The joke with the cookie (Jammie Dodger) again started a meme for that type of cookie among fans. I don't really like the Spitfire flying in space - it's a not technical mistake because we are told that they are using Bracewell's gravity bubble invention. For me, it's just a step beyond silly - but it's still quite fun. The Dalek's flying saucer metal interior room was not a set - it was an existing room in a factory that made cigars. I like the actor who plays Bracewell (Bill Paterson). I first saw him in a British comedy-drama "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet" where he plays a crooked businessman. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part, but when the Air Raid Warden yells "Put that light out" I like to think it is a reference to a famous British comedy where it was the Air Raid Warden's catch-phrase. But it could be just as mundane a reason that the real WW2 British Air Raid Wardens always said that. "Would you care for some tea?" - Dalek, "Victory of the Daleks"

"Rose" was set in 2005. The Doctor returned Rose home twelve months into the future in "Aliens of London" (i.e. 2006), and numerous references in subsequent "contemporary" episodes seem to require that much of the rest of the RTD era continued to take place twelve months into the future relative to the broadcast date. That means the Series 4 finale took place in 2009. "Now" for Amy is 2010, so she has no memory of a Dalek invasion that should have happened roughly a year ago.

The Actors in the colored Daleks were the same actors from the relevant Teletubbies show and have the same personalities therefore! lol. Seriously though Yeah a bit of a filler episode and not the best.

Brian Britton

Like the first comment here says, Amy was on Earth at the time of the Stolen Earth story so by rights she should remember the Daleks. Just like everyone else including the astronaut in Waters of Mars did. I did worry about the WW2 stuff being a difficult topic. Especially when Churchill and the others say "the Germans" rather than "the Nazis". But I guess that just reflects how people would have spoken at the time of the war. Most people now were born long after it was all over of course. The Daleks btw were originally conceived as a kind of metaphor for the Nazis. That was back in the early sixties when the end of the war was less than 20 years ago. Some of the things said by Churchill in the story were genuine quotes from the real man by the way. I only spotted two but I have read that there are more than that. My own feeling is that it's a pretty good "filler" story and it does have it's emotional moments. Especially when the professor is struggling with the new knowledge that he is a robot and his memories aren't of his real life. But it's not one I would rate highly overall I don't go back and watch it again except when I was binging the whole of "new Who" a few years ago.

Hi! Stolen Earth... In the Matt Smith episode Victory of the Daleks, the Doctor reminds Amy of the events of The Stolen Earth. Or at least, he tries to. But – despite making references as obvious as “planets in the sky” – Amy has no clue what he’s talking about, or even what the Daleks are. Ps. How old was Amy Pond at the time of the "Stolen Earth" episode? Unfortunately I don't know...
