Torchwood Season 1 - Episode 9

Comments

I like this story a lot. It has a feeling of "Love & Monsters" (which I also like a lot) focusing on the guest character with the voice-over narrations. And both stories had similar cast requirements: "Love & Monsters" was Doctor-lite because David and Billie were needed for other episodes; "Random Shoes" was Jack-lite because John Barrowman was needed for episode 12. Of course there wasn't a child-designed monster in this one - so there's a difference. I like the way the "ghost" aspect of the plot is given a science-fiction spin with the "Dogon sixth eye". The story was written and filmed so that Eugene doesn't make physical contact with anything - e.g. he goes under the police tape which was lifted for someone else, he goes through doors that were already opened for someone else - until near the end when he blows on Gwen's hair and then when he finally saves her. The idea of a "ghost" learning that they can make their presence felt physically is similar to an idea in the Douglas Adams book "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency". I really don't understand how the "friends" (I'll borrow Stephen's quotes from above) could possibly think that Eugene will just give them the eye for only £34 rather than accepted bid price. I worry about how the Jones family would feel to see him "alive" (after his funeral) and then for him to disappear and be taken from them again. That would be pretty traumatic. I think a slightly better ending could be that Eugene pushes Gwen to save her but remains invisible, Gwen understands what has happened and thanks Eugene for saving her, and then he is finally ready to go. But all the family see is Gwen. Or something like that.

I liked it, too :) And it felt a little different than the usual stories, right? I´m glad you do point that out, too. Because I was asking myself the question wether I´m the only one who felt like this :) Yes that Ebay bit was a little flaw in the episode. That´s true. But like you say, the overall episode was really good. :)

I liked this episode. It was a nice little detour from the usual storylines and it was kind of sad but quirky. I don't quite understand why Eugene didn't just tell his "friends" that he was going to contact whoever the mysterious eBay guy was. I'm sure he could still have accepted that bid and made his money. But apart from that quibble it was good.
