Mike is a spineless, doormat with a victim complex, who verbally and physically abuses everyone around him because of his inability to stand up to Sandy. This "relationship" needs to end. They had an infatuation in 3rd grade and have spent all of a few hours together since, that's not a real relationship, that's a fantasy.

I think you have the right idea that it stems from a perceived maturity thing, it was the whole reason she yelled at him in "Model Girlfriend" after all.
