Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

oh a click of a PEN ok I get it!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

hahah! I've got a good brother <3

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

*But sarcastically. Like that's the perception of her. That's the whole point of Blank Space; it's a representation of the caricature of her in the media being a maneating serial dater.

Kitty Thornton

I think the apple in Blank Space isn't an easter egg so much as symbolism - she's calling herself Eve in the Garden, a temptress that leads to the fall of man.

Kitty Thornton

The Lady Gaga song you were thinking of I believe is Bad Romance!

Dylan Vellow

1989 is pop gold in my opinion and one of my favorite albums of all time!! I truly adoreee the lyricism of Clean -- I find it so so relatable. And New Romantics is probably one of my all time favorite songs of hers. It's such a cheeky anthem/bop and at the same time has really deep, clever references to queer history (e.g., brick throwing alluding to the Stonewall riots + naming it after the New Romantics movement of the 80s) and literature (e.g., the Scarlett letter). It's so cool how she has mastered hiding such lyrical depth under catchy, sticky pop melodies. I've really appreciated the depth of her lyricism and literary and historical references in discovering her discography around the release of folklore <3. I've become such a fan of hers honestly. Also, I dunno if anyone mentioned this but to answer your question about Blank Space -- it is very much supposed to be a parody making fun and leaning into the media narrative around her during this time (with all the gossip and negativity around her dating life), in my opinion. Not really a peak into her actual personality. The music video definitely drives that idea home! Highly recommend the music video, it's hilarious and iconic. Can't wait for you to get to the vault tracks! I've had "Is it Over Now?," Now That We Don't Talk," and "Say Don't Go" stuck in my head for dayssss lol

Sophie

Did anyone mention for you that it’s a pen clicking in Blank Space? Like she’s got an ink pen and clip board and gonna write down the name? :)

Amanda

I think we should have a vote for Audrey to re-listen to Wonderland.

Annie Willow

Wonderland is honestly one of my favorite songs of all time! I'd suggest maybe trying to listen to it without the lyric video because that was a lot even for me and I already love the song! As others have said, it's supposed to make you feel all those things you felt, but in a more fun way that I think might flow better without the chaotic visuals. It's supposed to be a spin on Alice in Wonderland and how lost and turned around and chaotic everything was and how the relationship she describes resembles that! Always love watching you react to these albums even when we have different opinions! Looking so forward to the vault tracks!

Dawn Block

I love “How You Get the Girl”!! I like how dance-able it is. I also like how it is about a boy apologizing and healing a relationship. It takes you on a great story!! A lot of songs celebrate toxic relationships and this one is a nice exception. I like how it resolves in the ending too with the slight change of lyrics. Also it is so much fun to sing!! Try it!

Hannah Alfred

I think “Wonderland” is supposed to sound intentionally chaotic and messy at times. It makes me think about Alice in Wonderland and how most of her experience was life-threatening, but exciting, and scary, and strange, and magical. Never worse, but never better!

Hannah Alfred

I stopped the video to write this comment. WHO ELSE AGREES AUDREY IS THE F**** BEST?

Andreu Boada de Atela

take yo man is my friend groups song too 😭😭 it plays at every single event no matter the context it’s just so good

hannah

Justice for Wonderland 😭

Gigi

LOL Dianna Agron will always be famous 🤌🏽

Sophie

I had to figure out out I Wish You Were, so I googled lol. "Songfacts®: This song finds Taylor regretting the way she broke up with an ex-lover. A part of her wishes he would run back to her and, maybe, they will get back together. It sends a completely different message to the commitment-phobic beau in "All You Had to Do Was Stay." Taylor told Rolling Stone the song is about an ex who bought a house two blocks from hers (whom she implies was Harry Styles). Her liner notes message for this song state: "He Drove Past Her Street Each Night.""

Elisa Hanna

So sad about the Wonderland slander!!!😭 You mentioned feeling anxious and chaotic when listening to it and that’s to point, also the same theme for OOTW ☺️ I think there’s an interview of her talking about being in a relationship that is so anxiety ridden (w/ Harry) and how she wanted to convey that through these songs. Also the clicking in Blank Space is suppose to resemble a pen clicking!😉

Jazmin Balderas

wonderland is my favorite song on 1989 so you not liking it hurt💔 it’s supposed to be chaotic and kind of like your traveling through a portal. that’s the whole point. it’s like a spin on alice in wonderland. i think the visuals caught you off guard cause it’s such a good song!

Katie

super fans are the ones getting sweeter than fiction tv and bad blood remix. the $10 fans tier will get the vault tracks!

Katie

Also, I am very confused. You mentioned something about bonus content and also vault songs and being super fans. Are super fans the only ones who get to see the vault track reactions? Or is it just the other bonus things that aren’t the vault tracks for the super fans?

rapid-ren

I think you're right that wonderland does an excellent job lyrically and musically portraying the bizarre insanity of wonderland (Alice's wonderland). But even though I agree with the artistic value of the piece, I've never really gone out of my way to listen to it because I do see Audrey's point of view. It's not comfortable to listen to for me either. I don't really have anything in my life that caused me to connect to it and so I was put off by the chaos and never really gave it a fair listen. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot and see if it grows on me now that I have a better idea of why it sounds that way from reading some of these wonderland lover comments.

Becca

oh i am NOT here for the Wonderland slander!!😤 lol just kidding, i know people have their own opinion but its one of my faves from the album so that reaction really hurt🥲💔 I also had no idea about those visuals on the Clean lyric video. It's also one of my favorites and I know it by heart, so I had no need to watch the lyric video but damn I'm glad I saw it here, it's such a beatiful video to a beautiful song I haven't read any comment about that Lady Gaga song you're looking for, but could it be "Bloody Mary"? It has her singing "love" in the way you descriped. The song wasn't a single as far as I know but an edited version blew up on tiktok last year with the Wednesday show. and last but not least, as someone already mentioned, please react to "Beautiful Ghosts" :) It's from the 2019 Cat movie soundtrack and its soooo good, but due to the fact its assosiated with that movie, I don't think a lot of people know this song. At least its VERY underrated

patrick

i've been suggesting this song for a while now lol it's such an underrated song which is sad cause its so so good imo

patrick

I love HYGTG even though it always makes me think of Diet Coke 🙈

Nie

I think maybe you’re thinking of wonderland as this great place but it’s Wonderland from Alice in Wonderland (she references the rabbit hole, the Cheshire Cat and going mad like the mad hatter) which is supposed to be a stressful and confusing place that does almost feel like you’re on drugs. The song actually captured that feeling so well in my opinion. Don’t think it’s everyone’s favourite but if you think of it like that it really does make a lot more sense. Hope that makes sense lol

Susan Deans

Right?! I felt personally victimised by the wonderland hate 😂

Susan Deans

Seeing Audrey hate Wonderland hurts my soul, that's a favorite of mine. Also Wonderland is supposed to feel stressed, the relationship was chaotic and messy.

Tsukiakari1203

you asked about the backing vocals in Clean and you are correct! That is not Taylor, the backing vocals for Clean were done by the song's producer, the wonderful Imogen Heap!

Tsukiakari1203

I am here as requested, In Defense of How You Get The Girl : An Essay I've thought about this topic a lot because I have loved this song since release AND it also has a spot, to this day, among my favorite Taylor songs. However I have never tried to put all my reasons in a concise comprehensive manner outside of my brain, so this might be disjointed (so sorry). 1. I like the fun bouncy vibe and all the computer-y noises mixed with the actual instrument sounds. 2. I didn't realize until this past week seeing mutiple people say it is reminiscent of her earlier work. But I have always really enjoyed Taylor Swift and Fearless so that tracks I guess. 3. The story telling element you pointed out (I also did not realize it was reminiscent of her more country based story telling roots). But I find it so beautiful how she moves the story foward in this song with the slightest shift of words. There is beauty in story telling with fancy embellished words but there is something equally beautiful in telling a story in easy accessible language; and even more so to do it without losing any heart or the message you wanted to convey. 4. On the topic of story telling, the way this song fits into the narrative and the way it connects lyricly to other songs is one of my favorite moments of this album. The first and main one that comes to mind is of course "This Love", which follows it immediately. The "pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks" is one of my favorite lyrics (will dive into this more in 5), and to have this moment interwoven and referenced in the bridge of "This Love" with "your kiss, my cheek ... " is something that has always evoked so much emotion in me and made this album truly come together. I also love how it explores both the concepts of "All You Had To Do Was Stay" and "I Wish You Would" with her starting by literally dreaming up this scenario of someone coming back and fighting to hold a place in her life again, and all they have to do is show up for her (in my opinion the simplicity of the lyrics also help to amplify that idea). 5. I can not relate to this song on a surface level; I haven't even been in a romantic relationship, and I couldn't even apply this remotely to other relationships in my life. But I did (do still a little) have hopeless romantic tendencies and idealistic values of love, so I always found "pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks" to be so gentle and romantic, the flourishing of love. For a seemingly mundane thing, to be a memory she's held on to and placed so much value in is so human. (also the whole chorus is a hopeless romantics dream 🤡. you want me for worse or for better? you would wait forever and ever? YOU WANT ME FOREVER AND EVER 🥹). I also did not realize it at the time but there was an even more personal reason I loved this line along with the whole song. I am somewhere on the asexual spectrum and it seems to have meshed really well with my hopeless romanticism. I guess hearing a silly little song about an apology (that starts as a daydream and becomes reality) to get a love back (which is being desribed and defined to us with such a cute simple and innocent act of intimacy) really healed something in my little 16 year old heart and continues to comfort my 25 year old one. Disclaimer : I am an overthinker who likes to read waYYY into things and maybe makes connections and adds meaning to things that don't hold weight to other people, which is fine, we are all diffrent and equally valid humans. (I only hold a LITTLE itty bITTY bit of anger for people who don't like what I like, just a tiny bit [this is a joke]) side note, i totally paused the video to type this up (it took like an hour 😂) because i love this song so much, now back to the video 👋 [OH also I don't believe many people in general are in love with this song as much as I am, so you definitely aren't alone, but we are out there ... somewhere 😅]

marisol

I also REEEEEEEEEEALLY love I Know Places and I think it is one of my absolute favorite songs from this album, along with Clean, Out of the Woods, All You Had To Do Was Stay, and I Wish You Would. People have already explained that I Wish You Would is from the perspective of Taylor in her room thinking of an ex driving past her house and wishing she had said she still loves him and that maybe he would stop and come back so she could tell him.

rapid-ren

wonderland is my favorite song in 1989 it’s crazy

el ★

I think Wonderland is actually supposed to make people feel at least some kind of chaotic. I personally really love the song, specifically because it is a really good lyrical and even auditory story of two people who are overwhelmingly famous and caught between living their dreams and nightmarish tabloids and navigating a relationship as young people all the while. I think it is so cool that there are lyrics saying “life was never worse, and never better” recognizing the human ability to feel and hold multiple emotions at a time, and the notion of “losing their minds.” It’s definitely not the “happy adventure dreamland wonderland” and it’s more of the “how the hell did I get here and how do I get out of here and why is everything so overwhelming and scary but also exciting and wow I don’t think I will ever be the same” kind of Wonderland. Fun fact, the Alice in Wonderland movie always scared me as a kid, and even as an adult I think it is quite dark and creepy. So maybe that is why I love the cacophony and the recognition of wonderland not always being positive. It was a reflection of her feeling like she was losing her mind and this famous person she was dating at the time was experiencing similar stuff hence “we found wonderland, you and I got lost in it, life was never worse, but never better,” idk 🤷🏼 But I can see how it is one of those songs that just isn’t for everybody.

rapid-ren

I feel like either you love wonderland or you hate it, I personally love it, it's probably easy top 5 favs from 1989 (not including vault)

Denise McClymont

I love Wonderland BECAUSE it’s messy and chaotic. It’s like experiencing a super messy and chaotic relationship just like how Wonderland the place is messy and chaotic and a little insane. It’s my favorite on the whole album.

Annie Willow

For 'All You Had to Do Was Stay' it's interesting that you part of you wanted those stays to be a little more delayed cause I feel like she didn't delay it purposefully cause it's talking about how if he had just stayed earlier when they had been together it would have been all he needed to do instead of coming back later and promising to stay that time

Jay Johnston

I’m just going to drop this here. https://www.tumblr.com/swiftgronmasterpost

Annie Willow

On Blank Space currently but as much as I love TS my favourite version of it is a rock/metal cover of it by I Prevail

Jay Johnston

With Shake It Off, I have played it a bunch in Beat Saber (a VR music game) - and I feel like such a dork... ...a dork having a lot of fun! One time I was asked "Hey, Cody, what song were you doing? You looked so dorky, but looked like you were having a lot of fun!!" Now I want to play Shake It Off and get my dorkiness out!

Cody M

Taylor's Versions in general are the same exact arrangements often performed by the same musicians. The biggest change from the original to TV has been Better Than Revenge from Speak Now where she changed lyrics. I'm sure her vocal techniques have changed, but that is about it for changes.

Wayne Joy

I’m so interested to see if you make the correlation between vault song and regular album song for Is It Over Now. I’ve only seen one reactor that didn’t already have the background information be able to tie it to the album track it goes with!

Caitlin Green

blank space was not about her personally but what the media thought of her. she was getting so much hate for dating too much and being thought of as "crazy" because she couldn't keep a relationship which was stupid. so what she did was write a song from the medias perspective to see how they liked it being turned on them and it became one of her biggest hits ever. also, the apple is a reference to the blank space music video and the seagulls are a reference to the 1989 album as a whole

Katie

i definitely think you should react to the whole og album because a lot of it sounds different production wise and vocally too! you should also react to the music videos for this album as well (there are 6 right now and supposedly one coming for taylors version, likely going to be for a vault track)! they are seriously amazing and i think it would help you understand some of the lyrics and stories better!

Katie

As a geriatric millennial, I'm biting my nails the entire time you're gushing on how much you love the sound of Out of the Woods, because I have a feeling you will be obsessed with the vault tracks. 🤩

Nie

If I were to pick Taylor Swift songs for you and Danny to react to together, I’d probably pick Clean from this album and then, this is me trying from folklore

Shani Gribben

awesome reaction! the 1989 era had really good music videos especially wildest dreams, blank space, and out of the woods if you ever wanted to check them out

Cameron D’Angelo

You should totally react to Beautiful Ghosts, the song Taylor wrote with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the Cats movie. You probably don’t want to react to the actual movie though, at least not without copious amounts of alcohol lol. But Taylor’s song is worth it, at least her version from the credits

Shani Gribben

I never got past the chorus of bad blood. Damn those lows.

Meghan

Shake it Off is a dorky dancing song! It's my jamming out in the car song 😂 There was one day I was singing and dancing to this stopped at traffic lights and there was a police van beside me and I they were all watching me and laughing 😂 I did not care at all Wildest Dreams is one of my absolute favourite songs of hers! It really is beautiful! You should check out the music video for it, stunning video! This Love is also one of my favourites, it's so peaceful! Clean is incredible and then I've always loved New Romantics! Crazy you weren't a fan of Wonderland, that's always been a great song for me. It's meant to feel chaotic like Alice in Wonderland as it was a chaotic relationship. So glad you're enjoying this album, it was a game changer for Taylor and for her fans 🥰

Leanne W

The most important line in "I wish you would" to me always was "You think I'm gonna hate you now 'Cause you still don't know what I never said". He's in his car passing by and she's in her room thinking of him, but there's never any conversation or resolution or getting back together..... Because he still doesn't know what she never said.... which is the rest of the song about her regrets and change of heart etc.... but she never told him. At least that's the way I always understood it.

Becca

Taylor knows Shake It Off is kind of annoying and dorky - she said she wanted to create the kind of song where “if you’re at a wedding and there’s someone who hasn’t danced, when this song comes on their friends are like ‘Come on, you have to dance to this one!’” She just wanted a carefree song where people can just have fun 😁

Liam Mcfarlane

YASSSSS so excited to listen to this in a while

collette

Audrey I am three white claws in and you are matching my energy Thats not bad lol

Meghan

There's a video on YouTube "Taylor performs blank space at Grammy museum" that I bet you would really like. She talks about what the song means to her first, the story of it. It's just her and her guitar acoustic. Really great version of the song.

Becca

I was thinking the same thing, although there are differences in the vocals on 1989TV, they’re very slight - an earlier album like fearless or speak now would be much better for comparison

Liam Mcfarlane

Blank Space - Taylor wrote this when the media started painting her to be this boy-crazed psychopath who was "dating so many men" essentially for sport. She said "You guys think I'm like that?" when she was truly just dating like any other young woman in her early twenties, andshe wrotea song to play the part. It's a very satirical song and one of her most iconic!! And the click sound is a pen click as she is writing his name in the blank space 🩵

LanaJulie33

Yay thanks for taking time out of your vacation. Really appreciate this! So just a few notes based on what I have watched so far. 1. Blank Space is from the POV of this character the media makes Taylor out to be - a boy-crazy, deceiving woman who dates people just for the sake of it. Also, the sound in Blank Space chorus is a pen click as she writes the guy's name on her blank space. lol iconic sound 2. I agree with you that the backing vocals should have been pushed forward more in this rerecording. 3. The high-pitched "Stay" in All You Had To Do Was Stay originated from her dream where her ex came to her front door to get her back, and all she could say back was a high-pitched “Stay.” I am so glad this sound was re-created correctly in Taylor's Version 4. I Wish You Would is about a guy driving past his ex-girlfriend's house who thinks she hates him when in reality she still loves him. Taylor also had an interview with Rolling Stone that the song is about an ex who bought a house two blocks away from her. 5. The backing vocals in Clean is by Imogen Heap, she also helped produce the song with Taylor.

Marian Bahalla

Blank space is her sarcastic way of turning the negative way the press portrayed her then back on them. As some sort of man-eater, who churns through boyfriends. Like, if that's what you think of me I'm gonna run with it and it's gonna be a hit. And we can all just roll our eyes at how it's such a ridiculous stereotype they've tried to reduce her to.

Becca

I don't want to add another album. But I honestly think a reaction on fearless or red, especially fear less, transitions might be better. I'm not an expert. Nineteen eighty nine definitely sounds different but I think some of it is production. Fearless would be a really fascinating voice analyasis

Meghan

Blank Space was written from the point of view of the character the media painted her as, the little tongue click at the end of the chorus is supposed to be her clicking a pen so she can write a guy’s name on her “long list of ex-lovers”. In terms of the apple in the lyric video, there was one in the original music video too. I always assumed it was a biblical Adam and Eve reference - how a woman tempts a man into his downfall or some sexist bullshit like that 😂

Liam Mcfarlane

i realize this is a taylor reaction but i'm jealous you have the electric mayhem loungefly bag 😳

ariel

yessssssss

Cody M

I was JUST about to go to bed😭 no i can't fall asleep cause i'm gonna be too excited to watch this tomorrow 😂🥲

patrick

Yay
