THE LITTLE MERMAID (2023) MOVIE WATCH PARTY

Comments

The reason the changed where Ursula makes Ariel sign a contract to blood magic with a scale, was to fix the major plot hole of how, if Ariel could read the contract and write her name, why didn't she just write down her name and how she saved Eric etc to communicate with him.

ll lady

i agree. Its beautiful.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

yea I might do a batch with Olivia's new song AND Angle this friday right after I drop my Ma off at the airport

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

yea I dont understand how it didnt do better in theaters. idk. I personally think it was the BEST live action so far by far

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I loved your reaction. I'm glad you appreciated and liked the movie. Even saying it was your 2nd favorite Disney movie :) I saw it 13 times in theaters and I think it might be my favorite move of all time now. It just makes me so happy every time I watch it. I wish it had done better in theaters. I think it exceeded what some people were saying it would do, but it still obviously wasn't on level of Aladdin live-action (which was a fine adaptation but not nearly as good or deserving of a billion dollars as The Little Mermaid). It especially deserved to do better than The Lion King remake, I mean, come on. I just really hope that people give it a chance on digital and streaming, and it develops a following and gets the appreciation it deserves.

Tina Jo

Hey Audrey! Know you're busy with the move but I'm DYING to see your reaction to Halle's 1st solo single Angel. I saw Ariel nods in the beginning of the video which is actually PERFECT considering the message of the song. Letting you watch and listen for yourself to see if you agree. Love this movie; Halle definitely made me fall in love with my favorite Disney princess (now tied with Moana) again.

Jasmine James

I like the blended families

EmiRice

Yea I would have picked Shes In Love over Scuttle Butt anyday

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I guess wehn were watching a movie with MERMAIDS then we can give a little wriggle room for the crab and bird real life needs haha!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Yes the reprise was a stunning new addition for sure!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

oh good point! She totally could have wrote a letter. I never thought of that.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

ugh Chef Louis was sorely missed!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I was wondering about the clothes but i think it would be more true with wearing the same clothes for days right? then again theres mermaids so really anything goes hahah

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

For The First time NEEDED to be seen in context because it truly was a fantastic addition

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I haavent but I hope we see more of him in the future

Awesome watch party - I loved rewatching the movie *with you* and so thrilled it lived up to your expectations! Have you had the chance to also check out Jonah Hauer-King's rendition of Feelin' Good? It's unlisted on YT, but it's worth a listen!

Theo

It’s not working for me 😩

I chose not to listen to the soundtrack before watching the movie and LOVED For the First Time, I’m so glad you enjoy it now with context. Im obsessed with this remake, what really sells it for me is the chemistry between Halle & Jonah. The way they develop Eric’s character and make them mirror each other helps it feel like there’s a purpose to the retelling! Also, as a black girl I was excited to see Halle as Ariel regardless of the reasoning, but actually seeing her, it’s crystal clear that they were so serious about her being the best person for the job. She could not have been better and I’m over the moon about it 🥹

Sky Allen

This was by far one of the best life action Disney princess adaptations, up there with Cinderella👏🏻 Halle and Melissa were perfect castings and they really embodied the characters. My only qualm was that Ariel deserved more on lands outfits and dresses than simply one😭

Yehor Parkhomenko

That’s amazing.😆🎊

Koko

I wouldn’t🤔mind if we had a Lion King🦁series🎥(just about any🤲🏼DSNY OG animated to live action series).🎥At this point,☝🏼why not.🤔It would be awesome to watch👀reactions😅for all🤲🏼of them. Watch party suggestions please.👀🎊😎

Koko

Yes,👌🏼that was cute.😆I did not👎🏼expect to see👀her just pop up.⬆️🎊

Koko

It’s👇🏼on my list.📝I have🤔not👎🏼had a chance to watch👀it. I will🤲🏼at some point👈🏼this year🗓️or next, lol.😅✌🏼

Koko

The movie🎥was incredible.👌🏼This is my first☝🏼watch and it was definitely👌🏼worth it. They did🤔change🪢some🤲🏼things but it really🤲🏼worked better✌🏼than I imagined.💭For example,🤲🏼King Triton🔱was amazing.👌🏼He conveyed🫴🏼his part subtly🤌🏼yet forcefully💪🏼and it was amazing.👌🏼 It’s ironic🤔that you mentioned🗣️the dark water. So many🤲🏼people were outraged😡that it was too🤲🏼dark, so what🤔you’re seeing👀is a brightened💡version of what🤔they originally created.🤲🏼Still too dark IMO but I get🤔it. It would🤔have been amazing👌🏼if they kept Sebastian🦀and Flounder🐠looking👀more like the original🤲🏼animations.🖌️They are too🤲🏼real and sort of creepy.😧Scuttle’s change🪢was not👎🏼that bad. I think💭it was done pretty🤲🏼well.👌🏼The cast🤲🏼did very well.👌🏼Chef Louis👨🏻‍🍳and his shenanigans,👀plus Ariel’s🧜🏽‍♀️sisters song🎶was missing👀but☝🏼it worked so well👌🏼without them. This👇🏼was fantastic.⭐️Thank you.😌This was an excellent🤩watch party.👀🎉⭐️

I liked all of the changes to Poor Unfortunate Souls. I barely even noticed that the section about body language was removed, and that was the change I was most ambivalent about. The change from having her sign a contract to using a scale/drop of blood I think actually had more to do with the plothole of Ariel being able to write (cuz why didn't she just write Eric a letter, or at least write down her name for him?) than her not reading a contract, but I could be wrong. And then in Ursula's spell changing the made up word "larengix" to "amnesia" adds the forgetfulness part of the spell without taking anything away from it. I caught that change in the theater, but I wasn't sure it was a change until Ursula told the eels about it. I just knew that the first time I watched the original as an adult I caught the word "laryngitis," and I figured if amnesia was in the original I would've noticed it too.

Jenny D

Yeah, when I first saw the movie in the theater, Wild Uncharted Waters was my favorite out of the new songs, and while I do still love it, For The First Time became my favorite after listening to the album more afterwards. I also really love the additional Part of Your World Reprise. It really feels like the Disney version of Hans Christian Andersen's ending, with the little mermaid figurine falling back into the waves alongside Ariel's tears. As for Scuttlebutt...Well I like all of Halle's face acting during that scene! But actually, upon rewatch I realized I didn't mind the first bit of the song because while it is obnoxious, it also fits Scuttle's character, and some of the lyrics are fun. I think what really takes me out of it is when Sebastian starts rapping, because that just seems too out of character for him. I get that he was excited thinking the mission was finally about to succeed, but idk, his sudden burst of energy was jarring.

Jenny D

They changed Scuttle to be a northern gannet, and according to Google they can only stay underwater for up to 30 seconds. Also, Sebastian is a ghost crab, which is actually a type of crab that can't live underwater. But the CGI represented both species flawlessly! As for Ariel's tail: everything from where the scales start at her hips down to the very end is considered the tail. The end parts (the translucent parts that are basically where feet would be) are the fins. I think the part that sticks up along the back of the tail is also a fin, though I'm not sure if it would count as a dorsal fin or not. And the little translucent flaps at her hips I think also count as fins. The base of the tail is where it connects to her waist, like how the base of a dog's tail is where it connects to the body, and the other end is the tip. The tips of a mermaid's tail would be the equivalent to the tips of our toes.

Jenny D

A major reason why it's also easy to lean into musical theater for this movie, I feel they tried to lean more into how they adapted the movie for the stage musical. I've seen the stage musical in person and I loved it. Some of the story aspects transferred to this movie, like Ursula being Triton's sister. I wish they transferred more songs from the musical, rather than give Scuttle a song.

Turnip Crazy

When I watched your reaction video, it was also the first time I saw the movie too and I have to say, I love this movie. Hands down I think this is one of Disney's best live action remakes. Also to those who have seen the live action remake for Mulan, what is your opinion on it. I think the main reason that most people don't like it is because it didn't have any Disneyness in it. It had a similar plot but that was it. No singing and I felt that Mulan was the only character that was from the original. If you compare it to the original and you are talking about how similar the live action movie is than it was bad but by its self I thought it Good. Anyways I loved this movie reaction

Daniel

I need someone to make movies about the "real" stories I would love to see them,

Jeanette Dawe

I loved this live action so much! just like you, the little mermaid has been my favorite disney movie growing up and when i first heard that they casted Halle I was disappointed. Just because I was used to a white, red haired woman, nothing racist or anything. But the second I heard her voice I was in love (just like she used her siren song lol) Same with Melissa, I like her as an actress but I wasn't sure about her being Ursula, but she was SO good, she's definitely my favorite part in the movie. I was ok with how Flounder and Sebastian looked a few minutes into the movie. Its different but not bad at all. there are a few things I don't like about it tho; I HATE the scuttle song. I don't like that we always have to get a rap song as soon as Lin is involved. No hate towards him but it's getting kinda annoying. And the song is super cringe. I also didn't like Ariels dress, especially after she became human again. I wanted something more beautiful and not her old dress being torn. And I just realized after watching the reaction but Atlantis (or whatever the mermaids home is called) is so... boring. It was so beautiful in the original movie and here its just a bunch of rocks. Also I gotta get something of my chest which completely destroyed me lol So, in the original Hans Christen Anderson story, the little mermaid died in the end cause Eric fell in love with another woman. The second I heard the second reprise of part of your world (you know, at the end when she was on that rock) I imagined "what if they went with the original story, and this is her last song before she turns into sea foam..." i know its dark, but damn that would've been heartbreaking, and I honestly cant listen to that reprise without thinking about that anymore... ^^' But yea other than that, the movie is so so good, and I can safetely say that it's, in my opinion, so much better than the original and its definitely one of the best live action remakes.

patrick

I ended up loving it more too. People who are opposed to it or refuse to watch it due to pre-judgements are missing out.

Jennifer Lawrence

I was crying too, not gonna lie lol.

Jennifer Lawrence

I remember Cinderella 3 in particular being great and would be a fun reaction with everything it adds to the story. I'd like to throw Aladdin and it's sequels into the contenders. I remember being so excited to rent those when they came out on VHS.

Jennifer Lawrence

OMG YAY! I’m so excited!! I loved the remake so much!!

Gry_0726

GOSH the ending got me crying in theaters and it's got me all teary eyed again now. so, so good.

Megan Christina

I’m an 83 baby also and Little Mermaid was MY movie also! I wore out my vhs and cassette tape. I hate that I actually love the live action more than the original! It still has all the warm and fuzzy nostalgia while enriching the story making me love the story even more.

Annie Willow

1. About Tritons armor, look at his crown, it’s shark teeth 2. Also about scuttle, in this version Ariel hadn’t been to the surface yet, until the fireworks. Hence the need for scuttle to come below the surface 3. Not actually a prince, or adopted prince 4. During the bts, they mentioned it was going to be hard to actually recreate under the sea, so they just made it into carnival, the fun and visual. I’m sure beauty and the beast had that prob with the live action be our guest 5. They used the gun instead of a contract 1. Because of blood magic being the strongest magic and 2. If she can read a contract and write her name, why didn’t she just write Eric a note in the animated version explaining the situation. Everyone says that’s a huge plothole. 6. I do love that Ariel doesn’t remember the kiss being a requirement. It sets up Ariel and Eric actually bonding over stuff that matters instead of just trying to get the kiss 7. Yes that was Jody benson, og Ariel, passing the fork…or dinglehopper in this case 8. I’d have liked a reprise for Eric, after their day out and she heads off to bed and Grimsby offers that advice. 9. I love when “Vanessa” is singing to Eric, it gets foggy/Misty, like his mind is getting cloudy from the spell 10. You loved doing tlm animated and then the remake, would you be open to doing that with the other pended films eventually? Like beauty and the beast, enchanted Christmas and the live action? Or the Cinderella films, etc 11. Vanessa is on screen for only 4 mins and change, Fun fact lol 12. I love how Eric held Ariel a little tighter after her true form was revealed 13. I hear they’re working on live action Moana with the rock returning, nothing super official yet 14. I really want your opinion on live action beauty and the beast, I think you might like it, aside from auto tune

Zach Davis

I’m so glad you loved it!! I’ve been obsessed with this movie, driving my friends and family crazy because I won’t shut up about it 😅 saw it three times in theaters, it’s my screensaver on my phone, I just love it so much and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy to see you loved it too 🥹🥰

Jensen Argyle

I'm also a 1983 baby, lol. Lion King was my Little Mermaid, by comparison I guess. My brother and I saw it in theaters...5 times? Because we loved it so much and would beg to see it. Not that it took a ton of convincing as our grandfather also loved it and would take us. He still loves it and will watch it when it's on TV. I didn't like the live action version, however. Especially because they changed some words in some of the songs which ruined my attempts to sing along. Little Mermaid I didn't really get into until years later. I think the first Disney princess I loved was probably Jasmine in Aladdin. I actually like how they fleshed out the characters more in this one. As well as showing more of why Eric and Ariel developed feelings/the things they had in common. It felt much less rushed.

Jennifer Lawrence

Just starting but couple things, after eating the bts for the film: 1. They changed scuttle from a seagull to a sea bird that can actually be under the water for a brief amount of time 2. After the director found out what type of fish flounder really was, they found one that matched his color palette even if it’s not as cute or fluffy. I’ll prob add more as Audrey reacts lol

Zach Davis

Great reaction! The movie was fantastic 🫶 I LOVE the Jodi Benson Cameo!

Hannah Alfond

I'm not sure. I posted about it yesterday, you should look the post for more details, but Audy's a bit busy. - Audrey's Editor

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I hate to be that guy, but are we still getting a Glee episode this week?

Sabrina Louis

omg what a treat! I forgot it was being released on digital this week.

Jalen Brown

Excited for this watch party. I really enjoyed the movie. The movie exceeded my expectations. I loved the original The Little Mermaid so I was definitely nervous about this movie just because Disney's live action movies based off their animated movies have been very hit or miss in my opinion but I found myself loving this movie as much (if not more) than the original. I liked the subtle changes like the characters definitely being more fleshed out (especially Eric) and I like that Ariel forgetting she was suppose to kiss Eric but they still bonded and nearly kiss (as opposed to the animation where Ariel is actively trying to get a kiss from Eric). A highlight beyond Halle's singing was Halle's acting she was able to show her emotions off well without even speaking and simply by her facial expressions (which weren't over-exaggerated which they really could've been)

Morgan

YAY SO EXCITED TO WATCH THIS
