THE LITTLE MERMAID: FULL ALBUM REACTION (EXTENDED)

Comments

Under the sea was def changed, but it was to accentuate the actual scene in the movie (I saw it in theaters). Its so so so fun in and I’m sad you didn’t like it! But I’m sure when you end up watching the movie you will love it. Not written as more of a downer, I think Daveed just accentuated the words a little more so you could hear the words about being on a plate clearer. Love this reaction!

I would havent liked to have the song Shes In Love with the daughters of triton

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Going to see this tonight, so I figured I should probably listen beforehand bc <3. I was raised on the original too (I think I'm going to see it in the same theater too? I was... 5?). So, it's been a hot minute. I had the same vhs cover! 1. Fathoms Below - I wish Eric had gotten a little bit in that tbh. I know his voice wasn't the strongest, but maybe there could have been a bit in there that would have showcased him a little better? 2. I'm really bummed there's no version of "Daughters of Triton." The song at the beginning of the original where they introduce her sisters and she's supposed to be debuting. 3. Love Part of Your World in all it's versions - I think when you rewatched you were talking about how Jodi didn't really belt it out as much as it seemed. I remember as a kid thinking of Part of Your World as a big belty song. Maybe this is because princess wise (Oliver and Company came out right before) this was the first *bigger* beltier voice than any before. So, it was new and had all this new big sound as opposed to old school (old, old school? showing my age here) princesses. 4. Under the Sea - this def felt more subdued. I think you were right about it feeling like more of a warning than a party? I'm not sure how I feel about it. I do like both versions, but I'll have to see it to fully gauge my reaction. I have a soft spot for Daveed, so I really want to like it. I miss all the extra layers and voices, but I can see where that might be a little offsetting with the way they're all digitally done. I really do like his accent and the bit of personality we start to see here. I'm interested to see how much personality and energy goes into the character. 5. Poor Unfortunate Souls - I LOVE IT! Pat Carrol (original) was fantastic, but even rewatching it it was similar to Jodi where I remembered it slightly different. She seemed so much more sinister in the original than I remembered. Still creepy af, but it was more fun than I remembered. Melissa is fucking fantastic. I'm so excited to see her singing this. 6. So, Scuttlebutt seems like it might be trying to pull in that same vibe of Les Poissons, maybe? I agree it seems like it's geared towards kids. I mean, crazy voice, lots of rapping, and using the word "butt" 82,000 times. I wasn't crazy about it, BUT I always appreciate Lin's word play. Not just the rhythm, but also the actual wordplay and alliteration. Playing on the term "scuttlebutt" which can be slang for gossip, is at least a fun play on scuttle's name. Honestly, I think it might have been the voice they went with for Scuttle. He was crazy but endearing and this feels just more crazy and.... not endearing. Again it will be interesting to see the character outside of singing. There were a few parts though where Daveed sounded straight up like his roles in Hamilton. Specifically "Guns and Ships" and I can't remember the other one, ugh ... I think those are the right songs. And that was kind of fun. Maybe a little too close to Hamilton to really be new and fun, but it saved the song for me? 7. Kiss the Girl - Yes! I know you miss scuttle, but I really liked Daveed for this one. The baby voice, I think, is flounder? I know some people were annoyed at the change in lyrics, but honestly it was done so smoothly I can't even... It blended so well with the original. For the other new songs.... I have no idea. I guess they didn't stick with me enough. Eric def sounded like the weakest to me. Also, that one song that Halle did, I was kinda meh about. It should be more interesting to see it in context. I know Jodie has an acting cameo, but I kind of wish they could have layered her voice in somewhere. Maybe Vanessa's Trick? She sounded awesome as Vanessa/Ursula in the original. Although, this is kind of tricky bc one the cameo would be fun, but 2 I really appreciated what Julie Andrews said about Mary Poppins Returns. (JUST AN OBSERVATION THIS TIME I'M NOT BEGGING...just hanging out on my hill alone). She didn't want to do a cameo bc she didn't want anyone to see her and be like "oh there's the 'real' Mary Poppins." So it's a fine balance between fun and taking away from the newest portrayal. I do know Jodi has been all over the marketing for this and loves it. Lastly, I'll be interested to see how much music they pull from the original to work into the score itself. I know with *ducks behind the couch* Mary Poppins Returns they filled the score with nostalgic callbacks to the original songs. I'm always excited when they release the soundtracks early. They did this with og Beauty and the Beast. My best friend and I had the soundtrack to B&B on tape. We used to mute the little mermaid and play the soundtrack to see how they lined up. Sort of like The Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon (I might have mentioned this in a different comment. My memory is crap).

I'm excited to SEE For The FIrst Time because I really wanted to like it

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

The new songs that were written for the movie definitely hit better in context. Seeing them in an actual scene adds so much to the song. The story telling going on around “For The First Time” makes it hit harder than just hearing without context. The same thing with “Scuttlebut”.

Karlee Liner

No problem. 😉

Koko

I am considering it but I would most likely be heading towards artists and not musicals for that

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I can't because they're illegal; bootlegs :(

Koko

I totally forgot about that scene omg yes that would of been a weird crazy to see

Jackie Warner

I think Les Poissons got left out because it would probably look way too scary in live action

Shani Gribben

Would you consider doing more album reactions, maybe for musicals where full professional video recordings aren't available? If so, I'd love for you to listen through the Hadestown Broadway Cast Album in a giant watch party.

i really hope scuttle is good also mostly because awkwafina is one of my favorite funny actors if you wanna see more of her she is in shang chi and she made me laugh so much she will brighten your day :)

Dylan Appis

had to come back and say after watching the movie “for the first time” is really good i think watching it and hearing it together will make you like it more

fry

David over here causing shit haha!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

really?! That sounded more thin and forward than her normal

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

That's totally ok :) I'm glad you enjoy it!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I can’t find the vimeo password I need help Lol

Pamela Kibildis

Yes.☝🏼 The song itself is a lovely song 🎧 but the delivery was a bit much. 🎥 It was hard to listen to without the headphones. 🎧😅 Maybe he is not a singer? ⛔️🎙️ The arrangement could have been different. 🤔 We will never know unless he does a remake. I am wondering if they will keep it as is on the album. 💿🤔

Koko

It is on Disney+ as “The Little Mermaid Live!”. 🧜‍♀️ 🎭 If you are unable to watch it there, I can send you a link to the🦵🏼ver. I found it but it’s like a last resort. JLMK 🤔🤫 and I will send it in a message.📫

Koko

Honestly, bring it on.🤩 I would be excited to see it be brought to the screen.📺 📱 I also feel like🤔 (if they did that) we could be introduced to more perspectives of the sisters as individuals. More➕ mermaid 🧜‍♀️ stories, why not?

Koko

I cant find the broadway slime tutorial :(

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I felt like the prince song had a lot of potential

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

they were the show stopper for sure

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

That makes me think they’re going to do more Little Mermaid movies with the sisters

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I might have to hear the Mandarin version of Uncharted Waters. It seemed like it could have been a great song if sung right

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Omg I know that song!! Yes 🙌 That’s a great song! I’ve taught that song to a ton of students in the past. It’s a great audition song.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I enjoyed the album for the most part! The song I was unsure about on my 1st listen was For The First Time! Halle and Melissa McCarthy were the highlights!

Josh Middleton

One song that I wish they would have adapted for the movie is “She’s In Love” sung by the Mersisters from the Broadway version. I absolutely adore that song lol.

malaki

The Mandarin version of Wild Uncharted Waters is better. Not sure why they didnt tell Jonah to slowly build the emotion in the song, dude sounded stressed from the first verse. For the First Time works really nicely in Mandarin as well due to the soft syllables. Even Daveed’s talking parts in the clips they’ve shown aren’t very energetic so I feel the same way about Under the Sea.

Casual Art

I guess both points are valid, personally I liked both songs butwe still have thm in the original and I don't think we will be missing them in the new one.

Andreu Boada de Atela

I loved the SCUTTLEBUTT! It makes me have so much fun, also let me tell you that in spanish i's awesome too! t's a really good song!

Andreu Boada de Atela

I honestly kind of liked the Scuttlebutt song. It was fun and interesting. The prince's song could have been a heck of a lot better, like you said his delivery was a bit too much on it.

Robert Anderson

I had a similar thought🤔💭 lol. 😆 Also, I forgot to mention in my original post but they left out Les Poissons by Chef Louis (not sure what happened here) and Daughters of Triton by Ariel’s sisters (they said they cut it because Part of Your World is the face of this movie and they wanted to introduce Ariel first). It showcases more of the character’s personalities, which is a part of what made the original so fun. 🤩They could have done both songs 👍🏼 in my opinion.

Koko

I'm guessing Disney team/director Rob Marshall were like hey Alan & Lin we need to fill in some time for the movie Lin youre known for rapping & writing raps Awkwafina you used to rap before you got known as an actress write a rap for the bird & that's how we got the scuttlebutt song I guess 😂😂

Jackie Warner

What a treat. 🍭🤗 It was awesome to see you coordinating with the colors, I saw that, lol.😁🌊 This was an amazing sneak peak 🫣 at what to expect. I enjoyed listening to all these songs and am excited for the watch party. 👀 🎉 I hope you do a watch party 👀 🎉 for the original movie, the Broadway 🎭 version (it was amazing), then do this live action version so that we can watch all three together. 🤩✌🏼 I am not surprised 🤔Melissa McCarthy aka Ursula, did a fabulous 🤗 job with Poor Unfortunate Souls. She is an amazingly talented actress and she does so well delivering all of her characters. 🎭 This was a fun spin. I enjoyed Part of Your World, Reprise I, Reprise II 🧜‍♀️ with Halle Bailey aka Ariel and Under the Sea 🦀 🌊 with Daveed Diggs aka Sebastian. Those are my top five.✋🏼 I did not like all of the songs and I am surprised to hear they changed Scuttle🪿 into a girl character. 😮 Awkwafina is a gifted actress, so hoping it goes well. 😅 These songs never age. The originals are beyond.🧨 So excited 😃 we get to see the live action The Little Mermaid together for the first time.🧜‍♀️🐚🦀🐠

Koko

The original songs sound like knock offs of the broadway version

Corey Walker

For the first time is my FAVORITE 😩

Andrew Dunn

lol the other singer in under the sea is halle!

zozo

Totally agree! But I wonder if Audrey listens to it without pause, to really get the opportunity to appreciate thr buildup (and getting familiar with the lyrics) she will like it better or it will somewhat grow on her.

Céline L.

JUSTICE ON "FOR THE FIRST TIME", IT'S A BOP

Audrey and Danny's Editor

Thank you for reacting, I love hearing your thoughts!! Wild Uncharted Waters and For The First Time were definitely growers but still not my favorites. Curious to see how they play out with the visuals. (also I think the new ones would make really great audition songs for the theater kiddos lol)

Josiah W

Having seen Melissa McCarthy in a ton of comedy type roles, I was very surprised to hear she was going to be Ursula and I was very curious to hear how she’d do on Poor Unfortunate Souls. I really liked it. That said, I don’t know about Under the Sea or the Eric solo. Maybe seeing it in context will change my mind.
