2023-05-24 10:07:28 +0000 UTCI have debated watching this movie musical 🎥 🎶 because of the original. However, this is my first viewing and it is incredible. Also, I agree they are all so professional and on point, just like vets. It is a lot darker than the original but it was on Broadway 🎭, so you sort of expect it to be much heavier.😣 So sad that heartbreaking 💔 aspects are so relatable. It is still such a beautiful story. The only thing that was a bother, were certain situations being so rushed. The progression was out of wack.🫣 Lastly, how did Matilda know about Ms Honey? 🤔 That was strange. Otherwise the music, dancing and performances were top tier, great watch.🤩🎉✌🏼

2023-02-26 00:44:14 +0000 UTCIt’s my birthday ( and 20 to 1 in the morning) so I finally splurged and paid for the movie tier so I could see your reaction to this. I saw this film in the cinema back in November (I’m UK) and I was howling laughing at some points , but the last song and ‘quiet’ always make me sob. There’s a few other points where I tear up a little but quiet especially. As an autistic person who never received support or understanding from anyone including my own family the lyrics “I wonder if inside my head I’m not just a bit different from some of my friends” and “I’m sorry I’m not quite explaining it right” correlate with me on so many levels - I’ve known my whole life I was different and struggled all this time bc no one understood. I finally have a really great understanding teacher he’s like my miss honey (without the whole ending part) he’s just so lovely and he gives off major dad vibes which is nice. I can’t wait to see your reaction to the original it’s one of my favourite comfort films I haven’t watched it since I found out you were reacting so it’ll be even more exciting (I usually watch it at least once a week 🤣)

2023-02-26 00:42:26 +0000 UTCI think you would enjoy it, there's no singing but a more developed story. I hope you watch it someday .

2023-01-22 04:29:53 +0000 UTCJust looked up Lashana Lynch - how has she never done theatre?? Her voice is incredible, I'd love to see her in the West End or on Broadway. I love the original Matilda movie but this does the fantasy element really well, but is also really dark! I think Alisha Weir was amazing, she's so good at the emotional, dark scenes. She's definitely going to go far.

2023-01-20 14:24:19 +0000 UTCAnother thing with ADHD is that ADHD-PI (Predominantly Inattentive) is more common in girls and people just don't know about it. If you're on the discord, I could send you a link to an autism discord.

2023-01-19 07:37:13 +0000 UTCQuestion Audrey have you ever seen the 90's Matilda?
Krystal Wilson
2023-01-18 15:44:50 +0000 UTCI’m so glad you reacted to this! :D I’d never seen the musical before watching this, and I’ve never seen the 90’s film either, but I was a big Roald Dahl fan as a kid and Matilda was probably my favorite of his books. :D As a quiet bookworm kinda girl (though luckily I suffered none of the abuse Matilda went through) it was easy to find inspiration in a small but strong character like Matilda and find myself wanting to learn from her strength. Yeah, this is definitely a very dark story. Watching this version of it reminded me why I loved reading Dahl's books so much growing up. I always loved his unique writing style, but it's not just the quirkiness, the dark edge of humor, and the cleverness of it. Dahl's greatest strength is getting into the mind of a child and portraying the frustration and helplessness they feel in the face of unfair authority from the adults in their lives. He wrote an autobiography about his time in boarding school as a child, and the abuse he faced from the administration and older students, and you can see him grappling with the unfairness of adults abusing their authority over children in his writing. While the abuse is shown in exaggerated ways to take the edge off a bit (tossing a child by the pigtails, for example), there’s still a realness to it and a straightforward acknowledgment of what some kids go through that I think young readers really connect with. But he balances that darkness with hope in such a great way in his writing. Matilda and Miss Honey suffered, and it’s not like the suffering was somehow worth it to reach their happy end, but they freed themselves from their abusers and now they have the rest of their lives to build together. I have to say, I always appreciated that the book never shames Matilda for fighting back. The movie shows that too by having Matilda just flat-out reject Mrs. Philip’s idea of two wrongs not making a right. Senseless escalating vengeance of course isn’t great, but there’s often this feeling that victims are in the wrong or are somehow less of a victim if they fight back. But this book and movie reject the idea of a victim needing to be passive to be sympathetic. I also appreciate that it doesn’t adhere to “you always have to forgive family because family matters most in the end.” I swear whenever a movie or show brings in an estranged or jerk parent, there‘s always some forced forgiveness by the end. But here, we see that sometimes parents really are just awful, and if your bio family is awful it’s totally okay to cut them off and make a better family with people who actually love and support you. Anyway, sorry, I really do love this story and can clearly ramble on about it for ages. XD Just a few trivia things I guess. There’s a couple references to other Dahl books sprinkled throughout, mostly at the end. The opening bit with the Wonka bar and Roald Dahl’s name on the golden ticket is of course a reference to Willy Wonka (looks like it’s gonna be their logo for Dahl films going forward - from what I heard, Netflix bought the rights to a bunch of them and are gonna make a sort of franchise out of them.) The new name for the school at the end, “The Big Friendly School”, seems to be a reference to Dahl’s book “The BFG” (with BFG standing for “Big Friendly Giant”). This last one I’m not certain about, not least because I haven’t actually read the book in question (I just saw it on a friend’s bookshelf once), but I think the giraffe at the end is a reference to another Dahl book, “The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.” Also, you asked about how none of the other kids’ parents do anything about the Trunchbull. The book actually has an answer for that! At one point Matilda theorizes that the Trunchbull torments them in such bizarre and unusual ways (again, tossing a child by the pigtails) so that no parent would ever believe it if they were told. If a kid comes home saying “my teacher hit me”, their parents are gonna freak out and investigate, but if a kid comes home saying “my teacher grabbed a girl by the pigtails and chucked her a good twenty feet in the air”, their parents are just gonna think they’re making up stories or being over-imaginative. Finding refuge in audacity, essentially.

2023-01-17 20:14:14 +0000 UTCI just watched this movie the first time with you and omg, it's so good🥹 i cried so many times😭 In the beginning when we first see the school, there's a little sign in the grass saying "No Giraffes" so thats why there's one in the end cause they're allowed to be there too now (i guess😅) Oh and you have the same hairstyle in this video as Emma Pillsbury (you know, from glee)😅😇 looks really good :)

2023-01-17 18:59:12 +0000 UTCJenny is her first name and Honey is her last name. She's played by Lashana Lynch. She hasn't had any theater experience to note of but she has been growing in popularity as an actor since being in the Captain Marvel movie, then James Bond, and the Woman King. After this movie, I would love to see her in more musicals. Her voice is amazing.

2023-01-17 18:28:12 +0000 UTCOh man, that was major emotional roller coaster. I’ve loved the book and the 1996 movie but this was on a whole other level. My sister and I have always related to Matilda so much (she even looked so much like Mara Wilson at the time of the movie it was scary). We were so misunderstood as kids, we were the quiet, obedient girls just trying to be invisible while our older and middle brothers were always acting out and getting all the attention. They were both diagnosed with ADHD quite young and we were overlooked because, well, to be blunt, they only studied ADHD in little white boys and we didn’t behave they same as them. Turns out we both are autistic and have ADHD and have been masking and dissociating our entire lives. This musical feels like it was about my life, except I didn’t have a Miss Honey. I had to figure things out on my own as an adult. I had to be my own Miss Honey and that’s okay.

2023-01-17 14:58:17 +0000 UTCIt’s actually more common than you would think for pregnant woman to not realize they are pregnant. My sisters birth mother was one of them. It’s more common in overweight woman.
