I saw Matilda on the West End once, and iirc it's just portrayed as "older children". The way the musical works is, there are two "groups" of the cast. The actual kids play the main kid characters i.e. Matilda and her classmates who are the youngest grade of the school. Then the adults of the cast play multiple roles as the scene needs - playing the parents/adults or as in "Revolting Children" they play students of a higher year than Matilda's class but still at the same school

The spelling is meant to be weird and confusing! They're deliberately misspelling words and breaking the rules as part of their rebellion. So they're spelling n-o-r-t-y for naughty, 2-L-8-4-U for too late for you, s-p-l for spell, etc! (and the s-i-n-g-u-s-i-n-g part is sing / using, which is shortening the lyric "We sing revolting songs, using revolting rhymes")
in the musical, this song happens after they all do perfectly on a spelling test, causing Trunchbull to invent a fake word to have an excuse to punish one of them, so they've decided that she can't punish all of them and all start misspelling words

I can't stand Harry Potter either, I thought I was the only one! People love those books and movies but I couldn't get in to them at all. 😂👌

In answer to your question, the adults in the Broadway version of the song are playing the older kids. Instead of hiring dozens of child actors all the big kids, ages 12 and up I think, are played by adults and only the younger kids are played by actual kids.

hahah! You crack me up! Well if it makes you feel better, I cant stand Harry Potter. I even tried reading the books and couldnt get more than halfway. They just rub me the wrong way. It has everything I would normally love in a movie or book, but for some reason I cant stand them

Damn. They are all some talented ass kids. I agree definitely a different vibe between the two. The rawness of the Broadway version definitely supports the narrative of the wildness of the children.

At the particular moment you asked what they were spelling, they were actually spelling "revolting". They spell different words at different times...and sometimes they aren't actually spelling words. They're spelling abbreviations ("It is 2-L-8-4-U
We are revolting!")

Nah I've never read the book. I struggle with reading books unfortunately, it's complicated. But I doubt I'd like it if I didn't like the American movie or the West End show. The music, the kids, the story etc. just all bugs me. It's not my cup of tea unfortunately.

Oh really! Have you ever read the book? I haven't read it in years tbh bht It is a bit out there/traumatic tbh for a children's book. I love the American film but I'm glad this new one will be more closer to the book & English too😂

This will be controversial, but I can't stand Matilda. The movies or the show. It just really gets on my nerves and I don't know why because everyone else seems to love it. 😂🙈
