Switching our Patreon to EUR

Hi Everyone,

We've switched our Patreon to EUR as a default currency, this should save us on fees, conversion instabilities and general transactional overhead in the future.

What does this effectively mean for OpenTrackr's Patreon?
Not much, other than a slightly more cost effective and more stable monthly donation revenue for OpenTrackr.

As a current subscriber/donator in USD, do I need to do anything?
You don't need to do anythi...

OpenTrackr Finances (2024)

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I wish everyone a happy new year!
Just as prior years, I'm here to publish OpenTrackr's financial state of last year (2024).

The attached sheet will contain all incoming and outgoing transactions of OpenTrackr.
For this year there are barely any transactions, as I've mostly been making bigger payments for 5 or 6 months of co-location. This saves me time and effort by pre-paying for our datacenter co-location in bigger batches.
This year's she...

Hi Everyone,

Long time no see, sorry for the radio silence!
As with previous years, I'm here to publish OpenTrackr's financial state of last year (2023). The attached sheet contains all incoming and outgoing transactions of OpenTrackr.

I hope this gives transparency into how we're doing financially and where your money is going to.

If you don't wish to open the document, here is a little summery:

Between 2022-01-01 - 2022-12-31 we've had:

We've started the year with €2495,92 in reserves from previous years and have closed the year wi...

OpenTrackr Finances (2021)

Hi Everyone,

As promised last year, I plan on being transparent with how funds are being spent. I do this by publishing all incoming and outgoing transactions, so it's clear how many funds are left and what our monthly expenses are.

This isn't entirely foolproof, but it should at least show what your money is being spent on instead of it being a "black hole" :)

Today I'm proud to present the first full year. This document contains all transactions up to 2...

Update

Hi Supporters,

Some may have noticed it's been a bit quiet in here the last couple of months and I'm sorry for that! I've been very busy with life (moving and job related) which has caused me to forget.

As always I'm still working on OpenTrackr and I'm not planning to change anything about that anytime soon :)

For the time being I'll temporarily refrain from posting the bandwidth updates until I have more spare time, I don't think they got much attention anyway.

If y...

Hi Everyone,

I've been busy with life and moving places, but sorry for the late post!

For those interested here are the bandwidth statistics of July

This is 159.82TiB less then last month, even a bit more if you were to calculate this month having 31 days while June only covered 30 days.

Update & Bandwidth statistics (June 2021)

Hi Everyone,

You may or may not have noticed a sudden drop in total seeds/peers listed on the tracker, I don't know for sure what caused this.
I think the previous peer/seed count was inflated by spam IPs, because the current seed/peer listing seems to reflect the day/night cycle way better. Also the active unique torrent count is totally unaffected, indicating the tracker is still functioning properly.

I've tested connectivity from various places and networks all around the ...

Hey everyone,
I have some minor updates and partial bandwidth statistics for you today.

As of a few days ago we now offer a hourly updated fullscrape over at https://opentrackr.org/scrapes/fullscrape.gz -- We still offer fullscrapes through the tracker, but we may discontinue this in the future to reduce load.
This fullscrape is rate limited to 1...

Update & No bandwidth statistics for April

Hey Everyone,

I was considering whether to write an update here or just stay quiet for the month. In the end I felt like it is more appropriate to write an update

April was a busy month! I've placed the new server in our datacenter and optimized it here and there, but I was still running into some odd bottlenecks with the tracker software.

I ended up contacting the creator of the open...

It's showtime (New server update)

Hey Everyone,

I'm writing this post before jumping into the car and being on my way to the Datacenter.
The new server is installed, configured and ready to kick ass!

I've made some changes to the hardware since the last update. They are as follows:

  • PSU: Replaced with ASPOWER R2A-DV0550-N redundant 2U power supply.
  • FAN: The two fans in the middle have been replaced with higher CFM models

My reasoning behind the PSU is that I wasn't confiden...

Hey everyone,

I'll start off with a welcome!
Welcome to all the new Patreon's we've gotten over the last week after the article on TorrentFreak. Due to them our monthly co-location costs are now fully covered!

Additionally, we received a total of 0.06287849 Bitcoin (Worth about €3000) in the last couple of days from various addresses, thanks to them the new server hardware is also paid for!

Any surplus in donations will be kept apart and will be used for future OpenT...

Server troubles (and upcomming upgrade!)

Hey everyone,

We're getting to the point where our current server is hitting its limit.

It's over 10 year old hardware (TorrentFreak wrote an article about it previously, give it a read: TorrentFreak: Opentrackr Coordinates Millions of Torrent Downloads on an Old Dell Server) and we're severely CPU bottlenecked. This is due to many re...

This is a decrease of 21.23TB compared to last month. However with February being the shortest month, it only contains 28 days (3 less). Extrapolating our bandwidth usage to meet 31 days we come out to 186.44TB of bandwidth. This is a decrease of 3.19TB compared to last m...

Bandwidth statistics (December 2020)

Hi Everyone,

Some might have been expecting a Q4 release of the finances around now, but I'll be moving these to a yearly release schedule due to the low amount of transactions. I'll be releasing the full 2020 finances soon with the next update happening in January 2022. Sorry for that.

In other news, the DDoS attacks are still on-going but other then very temporary downtime it doesn't make too much of a dent.

Bandwidth statistics (October 2020)

Hi Everyone,

Oops, a bit late with the statistics this month! Don't worry, still here, just forgotten :)

This month we had to deal with some DDoS attacks, specificity attacking the service with UDP Packets, overloading the connection. We have some DDoS protection active, but it only covers attacks up to 10Gbps. When the connection got overloaded we simply suffered some minor downtime, but service quickly recovered.

Why one would target us? No clue, but it seems to have stopp...

OpenTrackr 2020 Q3 finances

Its not much, but its here!

A couple of months ago I said I was going to play open card with OpenTrackr's expenses, if the question about finances ever get raised we would have something to work off from.
The excel file is very simple and it could use some more detail, but it should at least allow us to be able to manually trace back all transactions.

The attached .ods file contains all our expenses and income, separated on sheets.

The last couple of days we've been dealing with DDoS attacks impacting our server. As we currently don't have the finances to afford specific DDoS filtration services/hardware, we will just need to deal with the occasional decre...

Small update before I get on with the bandwidth statistics.

At the start of this year I noticed openbittorrent.com having its DNS record set to our IP, but never acted on this.

Last month I realized this was foolish and made some changes to the tracker to also support old traffic from openbittorrent.com! You will see this in in the bandwidth statistics starting on the 6th.

Now OpenTrackr accepts connections on 3 UDP ports: 80, 1337 and 6969

I'll start with a small update regarding finances.

As more donations come in (mostly from you Patreons!) I feel like it makes sense to release quarterly updates about OpenTrackr's finances. I've always believed transparency is key and being honest about our donations and expenses should be a part of this.

OpenTrackr is a non-profit service and if we ever get to the point of receiving more donations then we hav...

Thank you for becoming a patreon!

I've been thinking a lot about in what ways we could make donations easier and better for our users, sending a quick and easy transaction with bitcoin or ethereum have always been an option. However nothing is as easy as a simple patreon button!

Let me know if there are any questions about this Patreon or the tracker :)
