Rachel sent sunshine to a crack house and you think that she isn’t cruel or mean?? Huh. The whole point of her character is that she’s heartless when it comes to getting what she wants she says it all the time. And even admitted to Finn that she was even more self centered than usual. She sat in the car from the first episode encouraging Kurt. That he could get into nyada and that he should improve his resume which gave him the idea to run for student council president only for her to turn around and enter the race only because she was triggered by the fact that Mercedes was possibly her equal or better. And you don’t think she’s mean…. The whole point is that she’s heartless. That she always gets what she wants and gets a very high level of privilege. Which is what Mercedes was pointing out because she has been being treated like she’s cruel and terrible and people are extremely harsh of her constantly only to be treated like a token when she’s just as good as Rachel if not BETTER. It’s a juxtaposition and you missed the whole point. Rachel never hears a no Mercedes is always being told no. It’s a play on how black artist are treated. Expecting extreme excellence all the time to a level of dehumanization. And the comments prove it actually Rachel is being given grace she absolutely does not deserve. And Mercedes is frustrated with this same experience over and over and she’s right regardless of anyone trying to tell her how to feel about because tone policing a black woman is not okay. In fact people have done so much worse in this show than what Mercedes did and yet she’s the brat now?? The girl who gave a pregnant homeless teenager a place to stay and they weren’t even friends and didn’t even get a thank you? Rachel has done a LOT of selfish things and she ends up being praised for it in the end.

Rachel may be selfish, but so are they all. She may be a brat, but she isnt cruel or mean, she doesnt bully people, and unlike Mercedes, Rachel works her a** off practicing, she doesnt just expect to be given things without putting in any effort like Mercedes.
Also, personally, I have always easily preferred Rachel's voice to everyone except Kurt, whose voice I love just as much as hers.

I love mercedes' cover of spotlight but I don't think it was a good or appropriate audition song for a this musical. (they never should've done west side story in the first place given the 1 latina in the entire cast). Mercedes' spotlight would've been better for an audition for a solo for a competition or that night of neglect from season 2.

Yea the song choices were odd for an audition

even if i love Mercedes cover of "spotlight" i think it's so dumb of her to audition with a song like this that isn't even from west side story? and completely different genre of songs! at least Rachel did a west side story song the other episode! but then they have a duet fight and it's another random song? that's so dumb lol

i think Shane was very wrong for saying this to Mercedes. yes she should have more confidence in herself, but pushing away one of her friends bc of a stupid competition? that's dumb. and i feel like no one is really mad at him for saying those stuff bc he said it calmly with a bunch of compliments and "baby" in his speech, but if it was Finn talking to Rachel like that, everyone would go mad lol i personally think this storyline is dumb, just like a bunch of storylines from the start of this season, but i hate how they're pitting Rachel and Mercedes against eachother, when they've been friends for a bit now. ssure they should have auditions for who is gonna play Maria, but it shoudln't be just them being put against eachother.. idk i always thought it was weird.. and now Mercedes is acting like a diva and ditching all her friends bc of this.. idk why you said Rachel was competitive in that scene bc to me she just looked like someone that was hurt that her friend sang a song like that.. she clearly got that the message was for her and felt a bit sad. and in that other scene i think Rachel had, for once, the right amount of competitiveness and friendship, she is obviously ready to fight for that role, but she doesn't forget that Mercedes is her friend, then Mercedes is just plain rude! Rachel was mean to Kurt by backstabbing him and only thinking about herself, but with Mercedes, she was actually nice. maybe Kurt should have given Mercedes the same advices

A lot of talk on who should be Maria, I think vocally both are capable, Rachel looks latina enough, Mercedes doesn't but the movie forgot that Puerto Rico holds a strong black population. But what if Santana or Tina wanted to be Maria? Or even Quinn in a dark wig. Nobody is even taking about how Bernardo should be white not Asian. And how Blaine isn't as masculine as Glee is making it look like. I don't know much about WSS but the male lead never struck much as a former gang leader in any of their versions.

Random but unfortunately I think the reason they did not use West Side Story songs at this point has to do with the iTunes sales Glee was managing at this point and not wanting to potentially re-use songs from West Side Story in the upcoming episodes.

Oh sweetie I'm so so sorry. Sometimes when people don't have anxiety, then they don't understand what it's like.
Crap! I know I still totally judge myself when I have an attack. "Audrey you're being dumb. Everything is fine! ugh" - Voices in my head
It's a long process, but mental health is VERY important. There are resources online to help you so you aren;t alone in this.

haha! I wouldn't say I "don't like Rachel" since there are a lot of qualities about her that I can personally relate to. I would just say, I don't like some of the choices she makes.

I was diagnosed with OCD, anxiety, and depression many years ago now, and I always saw a lot of myself in Emma's behaviour and mannerisms when I was a teen and this was airing. And now years later I'm waiting for the chance to see about an autism diagnosis (but screw that process for being so long here) but ANYWAY, I definitely get all those feelings of panic. I used to miss a lot of school because I'd be sick in the morning from anxiety, and still even get that now on days when I have work despite being on medication. Mental health is a roller coaster, but having someone supporting you is the best thing you can have. Everyone needs someone.

I was going to say the same. It was fine at the start but got out of sync about half way through. And it's very distracting hearing her reacting to moments that haven't happened yet.

This is definitely a mixed episode. I loved the storyline with Mike, he rarely gets any major storylines so I loved this one with his dad. It goes on for a few episodes and it's really interesting. As for the Mercedes stuff, it did come out of nowhere a bit and I didn't like her attitude at all despite understanding it. And Rachel is definitely a better fit for the role anyway and sang the song better imo, so I'm glad she got the role in the end. As for the Emma stuff, I also find it very triggering. I'm dealing with a mental health crisis at the moment. I'm not ok at all and I am all alone. I haven't stepped foot outside the house for 2 years now and I was barely going out before that. I'm anxious all the time and get panic attacks all the time. Not throwing up like yours, it just feels like I'm about to have a heart attack when they happen. It's not nice. But my parents just tell me to stop being stupid and ridiculous and to just get on with things. They don't understand and they refuse to listen. And I have no friends, no partner and no one else who'll listen to me. And the mental health services where I live are beyond useless. So yeah I'm not good and so hearing Will singing Fix You to Emma always makes me cry too. I hope I find someone as kind and understanding as Will one day. 🤞💕

The lead should always be either double casted or have an understudy because what happens if the lead is sick or can't do a show due to some sort of emergency that's why Broadway always casts an understudy for the leads. I don't like that she refused to be double casted for this reason. Also I know Rachel says Mercedes was better than her but I loved both performances equally so I wouldn't have been able to chose between them with that performance either. Lastly while I love Spotlight and Out Here on My Own Mercedes really should have done a Maria song to audition with and they should have chosen a Maria song as the callback song so we could see who would be best. I never understood why they had Rachel sing a Maria song but then had Mercedes do a pop song for her audition.
I also remember when I would audition for the musicals at my school they would have a couple of songs from the musical to chose from to sing. They wouldn't have us just pick any song. Also we would have a dance audition and an acting audition so it would have been nice to see that too since they all act and sing in the musical too and that would absolutely help pick who is the better Maria.

Fix You will always just break me emotionally. I also struggle with anxiety. I have OCD, but not to the degree of Emma. I more so have social anxiety and agoraphobia. Much better now, but I've come a long way. Even in the last six months. It is so difficult for others to understand why you are starting to hyperventilate from just walking into a store. I love how Glee talks about this kind of thing. Sometimes the story lines are over the top, or not completely accurate, but they are talked about, and that is the most important thing. Ginger supremacists?! Really?! I mean I am sure it's a thing, but really?! lol And for them to call her Freaky Deaky... so unbelievably cruel.

They definitely should've chosen a Maria song/had them act.
Who would you pick for Maria? (If you had to choose from a member of New Directions?)

I've always been very mixed on the Mercedes situation. On the one hand, I understand why she left. Will never appreciated her or anyone else in the glee club the way he did Rachel and Finn, but I don't like the way she went about it. Basically throwing a fit and knocking stuff over isn't the way to get respect. Also, I do agree with Will that she wasn't pushing herself enough.

Being realistic though, Merecedes wouldn’t have fit with Blaine as the Maria to his Tony.
But we have seen some of this attitude before when Jesse told Mercedes she was lazy, and she said she didn’t need to practice. Also it’s not even really unusual for a role to be double casted. It happens.
I think it was also another humbling experience for Rachel to understand that there are other talented people out there. She has her own little arc throughout all of this. And I feel like people forget that she is that ambitious theatre kid who will do what they need to reach the top. I do think they made her excessive though in her approach to double casting, but season 3 is where the shows starts to get out of pocket.

None of them are exactly good friends tho… and that thing with Blaine… Kurt and Rachel were barely friends at that point in time.

I'm not necessarily mad that they didn't pick a West Side Story song for the callback, except for the fact that Mercedes didn't pick a Maria song for her original audition either. Therefore it's impossible to know how she would do in the role (especially since we never get to see any of them act). The directors also needed to consider the chemistry between Maria and Tony when casting the roles and I definitely think that Rachel and Blaine make the best pair (which we'll see in the next couple of episodes).
That being said, It's All Over is one of my favorite group numbers in the show. I wish they had been able to do more character-based numbers like that.

Also, neither Rachel or Mercedes are good for Maria to be frank but I agree with you about the song choice. I get that they already did I Feel Pretty and other WSS songs in previous episodes, plus they are saving the others for the following episodes, but they could have at least chosen a song that would fit Maria's vocal style, you know?

This just made me want to see you do a Dreamgirls reaction.
And yes, the storyline with Mercedes is definitely forced. Like, this has never been a problem with her. We've seen her do choreography exquisitely and now she's having trouble lol sure I like that we're getting some real pushback to Rachel being "the star" because sometimes, it just doesn't make sense.
The Mike storyline and, the Will and Emma storyline, was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed "Cool" and "Fix You"

Rachel stabbing Kurt in the back wasn't suprising for me, she already did that in Blame it on the alcohol, what hurts me is that Kurt kept being friends with her... He really deserves better than that :(

I agree with the comments that it feels a little forced for Mercedes to take this turn, but I do definitely appreciate Amber getting more lines and more story and for Mercedes to develop as a character overall. This is my favorite season, it's also a season that has things that happen in it which I hate because kind of like this they're a little out of nowhere and seem kind of mean honestly. But we do get to appreciate a good chunk of the characters a bit more in depth And that's lovely. Some pretty good vocal combos coming up too

This episode hits home in so many ways. Growing up in an Asian household, I really related to the pressure that Mike was feeling. A- really is considered an Asian F, and having your parents weigh in so heavily on your future is a thing that so many Asian Americans (especially for the first generation - meaning ones born of immigrant parents). It was nice that they gave him balance with his mother's support - that's not typically how it goes down.
Music wise, so many great songs in this episode. It's All Over is one of my favorite group numbers and I loved how it featured so many great voices. And of course, we got to finally see Mike Chang do so much more than just dance.
The storyline with Mercedes does feel a bit forced, but I think it was so that they could give Amber more of a chance to shine.
Santana as Anita is perfect casting, there's no one else in the New Directions who can do that role justice and Naya absolutely shines as Anita. I've always felt that the casting Anita is the most pivotal for this musical.
And can I just say that Naya and Amber killed it in It's All Over
