We have to keep in mind what Kurt’s exposure to Christianity would have been, which is a religion that typically would have believed his very existence to be a sin; a religion that had really been at the root of much of the homophobia that made his life so difficult; and now God is potentially taking his father away from him. I can understand his initial reaction-wanting all talk of God far away from him.

Answer the question at the beginning: my favorite song of the episode is Hold Your Hand by John Lennon but performed by Chris Colfer as Kurt!!! Hold Your Hand is one of my favorite songs in the show, just beautiful!!!

This episode meant a lot to me as a teen. My feelings about religion matched Kurt's exactly, and I went to a school where most people were very religious. I liked the storyline with him and Mercedes. Neither of them converted the other, but they grew to respect each other's beliefs more.

There’ll always be someone who doesn’t like it but as long as you acknowledge that it’s your opinion and are open to other ideas I think it’s ok 😊

I always feel worried when I talk about religion since I’m a spiritual person but not religious. I don’t want to offend anyone and I would hope they would want the same for me. I’m glad it resonated with you ❤️

You absolutely hit the nail on the head for me at the end, and I think I had those thoughts even when I first watched this episode when it aired. It always slightly bothered me that they had Kurt apologise for pushing his friends away when they just weren't listening to him. As an atheist I appreciate friends reaching out when I have a difficult time and offering to help or do things or just talking to me, but prayer does nothing to comfort me because I don't believe it goes anywhere, so for them to keep pushing it on Kurt as the only way they can help bothered me. They could have just offered to sit and talk to him, or go over to his house. He's facing the possibility of losing his only parent and all they're doing is telling him his feelings are offending them. So yeah, wasn't a fan of that but love how the episode ended with Kurt's speech to Burt, and love I Want To Hold Your Hand <3 He sang it live on the Glee tour, one of the only times Chris ever really sang live as apparently he hates singing live!

I just replaced the video with a new one so it syncs!

I’ll try to get closer with the sync. It’s actually really difficult. However the sound during the singing would take a LOT of effort. I’d have to go to every song and change the levels of the speaking from the screen. I can try to talk louder during the singing on the next batch of watch parties.

Loved this! Just a couple of things for the next watch party: this was a couple of seconds out of sync based on your reactions and singing along to the songs out of time etc. And the episode, particularly when they’re singing is drowning out your commentary.

Losing my religion is my favorite Finn song. I think it fit his voice so well.

And I swear only him can make me believe " I wanna hold your hand" is a song about a father and son relationship

Chris Colfer is really good in this one. The last scene in the hospital gets me everytime.

For me this episode is always one that makes me.. think? One set of my grandparents were very Catholic, and my best friend was raised in a relatively strict Christian household. I myself never went to church, never really was raised to believe. I'm gay, and for a while I held the same belief as Kurt. But I also knew that there was comfort in saying grace with my best friend's family before eating, and thinking that there's somewhere we go after death, etc. I'd say that as of now, I don't believe, but I don't NOT believe either. When my grandpa and great grandpa passed in the last year or so, many people told my family they were praying for us, and even though we aren't really religious or anything, there was so much comfort in that. I fully believe that all can believe what they want, as long as they aren't using those beliefs to try and take away someone's livelihood or rights. As long as people are respected, believe in whatever you want and need to ♥
Anyways, as a whole the episode has it's ups and downs plot and music wise, but the last song has always been one of my faves. I recommend listening to the full version of it, because other voices are highlighted in it as well, and I think you'd really like it!!

This was a cringey episode and not great on the music side except perhaps for the last song, but the next ep is great, perhaps my favorite in the whole series.

This show hits home, a few years ago I lost my mother to a heart attack, but I love this show because it helped me deal with it better. I love the choice in songs here. I don't know if you noticed behind Amber Riley, in the church scene, there was a person that she resembled, which happened to be her real mom.. She was also in season 1 during their like a prayer performance. She was dancing with her at the end. And the "Park" Finn and Rachel were in during Papa can you hear me, was very morbidly in the Hollywood Forever cemetery behind Paramount studios where they taped Glee. You can see the mausoleum near the front of the water to the far right, I actually think that was Judy Garland's not sure though.

Religion was one of the subjects I feel Glee did really well. I have a rocky relationship with organized religion starting with being born into a cult, but I have and will always appreciate everyone’s own beliefs. Also, it’s impossible for me to not sing along to “One of Us”.

imo this episode is a really important character arc for finn because a loss of faith is something that definitely stays with him throughout the show and it’s evident

Lol. It’s Grilled Cheesus, but I definitely feel like you hit the nail on the head with that title. I haven’t watched your reaction yet as I’m at work, but I can’t wait to see it. Chris Colfer really started to show off his acting chops in this one.
