LG 2023 OLED Series is coming...and why LG G3 is the biggest upgrade yet

This sounds like an LG promo, but it is not.

At CES 2023 of last January, LG finally unveiled its LG OLEDs 2023 line-up and shook the world with its LG G3 OLED reveal with an actual brand new OLED panel technology shift after 10 years of iterative improvements.

Initially expected by 2024, LG anticipated the arrival on the market of MLA-OLED Technology which, thanks to the new 42.4 billion (!) micro-lenses layer on top of the panel is able to avoid light dispersing and actually more than doubles the Peak HDR Luminance of previous OLEDs from 800 nits (all previous C Series) or 1.000 nits (G2) to 2.100 nits (in Vivid Mode - around 1.600-1.800 nits after calibration)

This huge brightness uplift will also bring a noticeable bump of Color Volume and spectrum as well, therefore entering QD-OLEDs territory by all means to the point that some manufacturers (as Philips) decided to stop producing QD-OLEDs altogether in favor of MLA-OLEDs after the announcement.

But here's all the information I also collected about them as well.

LG C3/G3 OLED Improvements re-cap:

• C3 55, 65 and 77-inch models will have a Peak HDR Brightness around 1.000 nits (over the C2's 800 nits; same as G2). No MLA support;
• G3 55, 65 and 77-inch models will have a (groundbreaking) Peak HDR Brightness of 2.100 nits (over the G2's 1.000 nits) thanks to the new MLA (Micro-Lens-Array) Technology (which was expected in 2024 but it got anticipated for 2023 series to counter the QD-OLED space);
• After calibration (with a D65 target), G3 surpassed the luminance of the new 2023 Samsung QD-OLEDs (1.600 nits vs 1.300 nits);
• MLA technology adds a layer of tiny lenses to the TV's structure to focus the OLED panel's light output better, making sure that more of the potential light is focused directly towards the viewer. The way MLA technology works also means that the extra brightness can be achieved without increasing either power consumption or the likelihood of the OLED panel suffering with permanent image retention;
• MLA could also increase the luminance of colors, therefore improving the Color Gamut accuracy as well;
• Peripheral vision improved by 30% too, while also removing color tints to the sides;
• "Alpha Reality" feature: new AI Super Upscaling which will remove noise but retain original film grain for sub-4K contents;
• New "Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro": which will scan from 5.000 separate analysis zones (of previous DTM) to 20.000 separate analysis zones before deciding how to alter/improve the HDR tone mapping for each frame/scene;
• New "Object Enhancer" feature, linked to DTM Pro, which will also tone map faces and specific objects at distance differently to provide even more depth to the picture, making it closer to a "real-life" look;
• QMS (Quick-Media-Switching) VRR: which does away with the momentary black screen you can get when switching between HDMI sources with different frame rates;
• New AI Sound Pro features including Auto Balance Control;
• DTS and DTS:X passthrough is back!
• New upgraded and simplified webOS version;
• Same power consumption;
• Even less image retention and burn-in risks;
• Prices will be known around March 2023.

I also think that both HGIG and DTM on G3 should be noticeably improved for games thanks to the much higher Peak Brightness (which will avoid having an average dim EOTF with HGIG) and 4x the scan zones of DTM (which in theory should provide better results, especially in night/dark scenes).

So it will be a new big fight between them!

Overall I wasn't so excited since my first OLED purchase and I can already confirm to you that, yes, I will buy an LG G3 OLED on Day 1 also thanks to YOU and your support as Patrons, so to immediately start my thorough testing and comparisons in order to provide you the full Optimized Settings as soon as possible... :)
