God of War: Ragnarok - HDR Optimized Settings
Added 2022-11-08 20:25:50 +0000 UTC
The game DOES USE/APPLY Playstation and PC HDR Calibration app settings.
The game HDR implementation is very good as it correctly applies the system HDR calibration settings in-game (PC version included), while also offering additional HDR controls.

HDR Brightness: this controls the overall gamma/midpoint of the image. The Default (50) setting already provides a balanced exposure, but if the picture is too dark for you, you can increase this setting up to 75;
UI Brightness: this only controls the luminance of the user interface. The Default (50) setting is already bright enough for an HDR HUD.
Enjoy!
BONUS:
Disable Film Grain: to improve both clarity and contrast of the picture.

I only tested those on LG OLEDs but you can try them also on the Sony ;)

2024-06-15 20:06:52 +0000 UTCShould I still use these settings if I'm gaming on a Sony A95L?

2024-06-15 19:45:25 +0000 UTCWhen using DTM set Peak HDR Luminance preferably to 4.000 nits (which is +25 clicks on PS5 Calibration app) and that's it.

2023-12-21 20:26:28 +0000 UTC“For an even better HDR rendition in this case it is suggested to enable Dynamic Tone Mapping after having adjusted the system HDR Calibration for it.” So set our TV to DTM on then do the calibration? Or do the calibration in HGIG then set the TV to DTM on?

2023-12-21 20:13:00 +0000 UTCThe game is using the system level HDR Calibration, which I've already updated adding the values for G3 here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63780325 (it's +18 clicks for G3 = 1.500 nits) ;)

2023-04-15 07:24:56 +0000 UTC@P40L0 if i stick with HGIG here -- how would i approach this for a g3? how many clicks in the in game optimization ?

2023-04-15 07:03:51 +0000 UTCYes as Samsung will still use a form of Tone Mapping even with HGIG. You can stick with 1.000 nits and see which one you prefer basically, as long as you stay in HDR Game preset.

2022-11-13 11:27:35 +0000 UTCOk I'm in game mode, +16 clicks. So I guess using hgig is up to my taste?

2022-11-13 11:25:40 +0000 UTC+14 clicks is equal to 800 nits and is explicitly aimed for LG OLEDs' HGIG mode, not Samsung one. In your case I would try using HDR Game preset and maybe something around 1.000 nits (which is +16 clicks), so also try that. Or you should also have the possibility to turn off HGIG and revert to regular Tone Mapping even when using HDR Game preset. I would avoid using anything different than HDR Game preset as input lag will go sky high compared to it.

2022-11-13 11:19:53 +0000 UTCI'm pretty certain Samsung always tone map regardless don't they?
Josh Trebilcock
2022-11-13 11:14:52 +0000 UTCI'm on a q80t :/ I was using 14 clicks and hgig game mode as I can only apply hgig in game mode. But I've found movie mode for games a bit better picture quality. I'm not fussed about latency. So unless a game uses the system calibration, I normally opt for dtm

2022-11-13 11:13:43 +0000 UTCWait, HDR Game mode/preset is ALWAYS recommended! I was just talking about the HGIG option (basically "No Tone Mapping") opposed to DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping) option, but both are within the HDR Game preset which is always the one you should use for gaming!

2022-11-13 10:53:48 +0000 UTCThanks a lot. Always good to not have to use game mode

2022-11-09 12:51:41 +0000 UTCYes as you will need to do specific adjustments for HGIG or DTM directly on the system HDR Calibration app (see the link for more details)

2022-11-09 12:39:51 +0000 UTCAre these the recommendations for DTM too?

2022-11-09 12:23:48 +0000 UTCMajor thanks! The first god of war was tricky so it's nice to know the sequel uses the system HDR
