The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - HDR Optimized Settings
Added 2022-04-19 08:21:15 +0000 UTC
The game is NOT using/applying Xbox/Playstation HDR Calibration app settings.
UPDATE after Patch 4.04
The game now finally provides (in theory) a proper Peak HDR Luminance slider up to 1.500 nits and a Paper White slider up to 500 nits on top of the regular Gamma slider which is now recommended to its default value as follows:

Then you can proceed with the new in-game HDR controls:

Even if counter intuitive and wrong on paper, I've found that setting the "Max Monitor Brightness" slider to 1.500 (nits; Max) and "Paper White" to 200 (nits) for DTM or 500 (nits; Max) for HGIG is the only way to actually reach around 1.000 nits in the brightest spot in-game (e.g. the sun in the brightest day) while also preserving a great contrast with very dark areas, all with no black level raise at all.
You can then alternate and choose between DTM or HGIG as you prefer.
BONUS:
- Use "Performance Mode" on Xbox Series X and PS5 as this provides a noticeably higher average resolution at more consistent 60fps compared to Quality Mode (where RT implementation is only partial there and it isn't worth the big resolution/framerate loss);
- Use "Quality Mode" on Xbox Series S (as to reach 60fps too many visual sacrifices were made there instead);
- If you play on controller: lower the Right Stick Sensitivity from 1.00 to 0.75 at least (as it's just too high/quick by default);
- Switch back to Classic Geralt Movement Scheme in order to improve animations' jerkiness during fast movements.

Yes and 1500 will still look good in your case

2024-08-04 06:54:11 +0000 UTCSo it's 1500 and 500? So I don't do the max nits on my TV of 1100?

2024-08-03 08:02:08 +0000 UTCWeird, maybe double check you have Windows with HDR enabled and use Borderless Fullscreen in-game, along with all my other settings. Also try disabling RTX HDR just for it via Inspector (TrueHDR flag set to Off only for it)

2024-08-03 07:02:51 +0000 UTCSome reason on PC, my witcher 3 minimizes automatically and when I click back in it seems to be ignoring my hdr and doing a black level raise. As a result everyone is grey and washed out.

2024-08-02 23:12:58 +0000 UTCYes if you prefer. Then just change Paper White to 200 or 250, leave Max Monitor Brightness to 1.500

Jakub Rupinski
2023-09-09 00:15:23 +0000 UTCThey shouldn't but if they seems so to you, lower the Paper White value to your liking.

2022-12-20 12:00:46 +0000 UTCFor now it's basically the same as before even after the NG update, but devs are claiming that a proper in-game HDR Calibration menu is coming in a future patch: https://twitter.com/Marcin360/status/1600909919212883968?s=20&t=K24SXQhvWUfcNZI78OcrGw I will re-test it (again) once it lands. ;)
