Ghost of Tsushima - HDR Optimized Settings

The game DOES USE/APPLY Playstation HDR Calibration app settings but not PC HDR Calibration ones.

It has a good HDR implementation and is one of the few games actually leveraging system-wide HDR settings on Playstation.

It also offers a separate Brightness control which can improve shadow details:

Set the BRIGHTNESS slider to 60 to improve shadow details (which can be a bit crushed by default) and have a more natural look.

FOR THE PC VERSION:

You need to setup HDR directly in-game with additional sliders:

If you have an LG OLED and:

> you're using Dynamic Tone Mapping or Dynamic Contrast:

> you're using HGIG:

If you don't have an LG OLED and:

> you don't have an HGIG option:

> you're using HGIG:

In all cases, set the BRIGHTNESS slider to 60 to improve shadow details (which can be a bit crushed by default) and have a more natural look.

Comments

Yes, you need to set in-game Brightness to 60 to fix it

The shadow details still crushed even with pc release?

It's correct only if you have properly working HGIG enabled on the monitor, otherwise it will have tone mapping. If in your case you're clipping Win11 HDR Calibration patterns to 420 nits, you probably have HGIG enabled on it so you can set the same in-game.

Please excuse my ignorance, but am I correct in believing that aligning peak brightness to your monitors rated peak is best? I’m currently using hdr 400 true black and through windows hdr config, looks like I’m hitting 420 nits peak. This would mean setting peak in game brightness to 420 is optimal. Correct?

Michael Hilnbrand

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification!

Michael Hilnbrand

The image is not strictly the one to follow, but the text recommendations are so, yes, Paper White 200 is always recommended except for G3/G4 where 276 nits is better.

P40L0

Hello! It looks like in all cases, setting paper white to 200 is best. Is that correct? I’m confused because the image you included for the pc version is set to 10. For reference, I’m using Alienware’s oled (AW3423DW)

Michael Hilnbrand

Thank you 🙏🏼

Laurens

Yeah, defaults are good for a monitor (1.000 nits Peak, 200 nits Paper White), just increase regular Brightness to 60

P40L0

And what if you use a monitor should I leave default ?
